There are literally dozens of us! I’m running Zorin. The Reddit debacle really hit home for me that free alternatives to commercial projects work best when everyone pitches in a little.

“X12” got a laugh from me. What I don’t get is that nobody is stopping you from working on X11 if you want, so why complain?

TrueNAS shares help.

I’m pretty new to self hosting, so apoligies in advance if what i wanna do sounds stupid. I’ve had an old lenovo desktop set up with truenas for about a month now, and I was wondering if it was possible to have an smb share and a filebrowser instance use the same directory. I tried to set it up like this when deploying...

If you are more interested in running apps than having a NAS, I recommend trying CasaOS. TrueNAS is great, but I found CasaOS significantly more straightforward, especially when it comes to smb shares (it’s like two clicks).

Also TrueNAS uses ZFS which is good for what it is, but means you basically need a machine running TrueNAS to read/write the drives in case something goes wrong.

Compared to TrueNAS, CasaOS is more of a “platform for running apps”, but unless you’re storing dozens of terabytes of improtant data in RAID or something, it’s still probably the easier/lower maitenence option.

My pet peeve is when people complain someone else’s free labor isn’t being done in the way they’d prefer. First of all, it’s entitled. Secondly, complaining on social media rarely if ever accomplishes anything in FOSS land.

I love this question. My first thought was not a book, but Béla Tarr’s The Turin Horse which depicts the repetitive life of a Hungarian farmer and his daughter. Each day is essentially the same, with similar but ever-changing frustrations, and no hope for change in sight. The audience really feels their frustrations, but the characters also appear to have fully accepted the situation. The title is a reference to the horse-whipping that allegedly drove Nietzsche insane.

Not quite an “epic” in the usual sense, but absolutely repetitive and a surrender to economic powers beyond one’s control.

Zorin is designed with windows users in mind. It’s very polished and it helped me make the transition.

Cory Doctorow has a book, “Walkaway” that is basically exploring the politics of FOSS on a societal scale. It’s pretty nerdy obv but I enjoyed it and it doesn’t overly glamourize any political system the way you’d typically see in political fiction.

Why doesn’t this have a million upvotes

I’m one of the converts. Didn’t like Windows 11 at all, decided to try Ubuntu/Zorin before going back to 10 and ended up staying. I’ve tried various distros many times over the past ~15 years but it never felt “ready” to me until now.

Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

Apologies if you’ve answered this elsewhere but I’m assuming there’s a reason you haven’t bought your own router?

That’s a good observation! I liked how in “Her” the AI had the appearence of emotional intelligence, but you come to realize it was just using outputs that humans would respond to. Very precient for how GPT et al works.

TrueNAS is very good at being a NAS. I used it for some time but eventually moved to CasaOS because it’s better at being a home server.

No problem! I really like it!

Oh yes, fully kidding. On reddit that (shortened) quote was frequently employed by bigots complaining about mod “censorship” of their “opinions”.

I’ll leave it to your imagination what exactly those opinions were.
