If you are a newby FOR GODS SAKE USE UBUNTU.

Absolutely! I actually recommend Ubuntu for people used to MacOS, and Zorin (based on Ubuntu) for those used to Windows. Start simple and learn from there.

I love this question. My first thought was not a book, but Béla Tarr’s The Turin Horse which depicts the repetitive life of a Hungarian farmer and his daughter. Each day is essentially the same, with similar but ever-changing frustrations, and no hope for change in sight. The audience really feels their frustrations, but the characters also appear to have fully accepted the situation. The title is a reference to the horse-whipping that allegedly drove Nietzsche insane.

Not quite an “epic” in the usual sense, but absolutely repetitive and a surrender to economic powers beyond one’s control.

This is absolutely an incel meme. Incel ideology hinges on always placing the blame on something external (often women and genetics) for their problems, never their own actions. If someone were to blame themselves and take responsibility for their own situation, it would by definition not be Involuntary.

I wasn’t calling you an Incel.

(a life condition you’d like to change)

Incel ideology is defined by the “involuntary” (the “In” in “Incel”). So by definition, saying that something can be changed, implies it is not involuntary. And not a part of the ideology.

And because choosing to follow the ideology is a choice, there can be no such thing as a “small ‘i’” incel.

There are literally dozens of us! I’m running Zorin. The Reddit debacle really hit home for me that free alternatives to commercial projects work best when everyone pitches in a little.

I always laughed when someone called us a “janitor” after we banned them. Like you understand in this analogy you are the trash being taken out, right?

I can see you still have a long way to go. It’s ok, I was like you once.

The best cold intro is:

“Counselor Deanna Troi, personal log, stardate 44805.3. My mother is on board.”

Empty corridor with Picard peeking around the corner

Yesss, it’s such a shame that the other Odo-Lwaxana episode (the one where she gets married) is the B-plot of “The Muse”.

Yes, “Dark Page”. A top five TNG episode for me.

My pet peeve is when people complain someone else’s free labor isn’t being done in the way they’d prefer. First of all, it’s entitled. Secondly, complaining on social media rarely if ever accomplishes anything in FOSS land.

TrueNAS shares help.

I’m pretty new to self hosting, so apoligies in advance if what i wanna do sounds stupid. I’ve had an old lenovo desktop set up with truenas for about a month now, and I was wondering if it was possible to have an smb share and a filebrowser instance use the same directory. I tried to set it up like this when deploying...

Compared to TrueNAS, CasaOS is more of a “platform for running apps”, but unless you’re storing dozens of terabytes of improtant data in RAID or something, it’s still probably the easier/lower maitenence option.

Zorin is designed with windows users in mind. It’s very polished and it helped me make the transition.

Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

That’s a good observation! I liked how in “Her” the AI had the appearence of emotional intelligence, but you come to realize it was just using outputs that humans would respond to. Very precient for how GPT et al works.

“X12” got a laugh from me. What I don’t get is that nobody is stopping you from working on X11 if you want, so why complain?

Oh yes, fully kidding. On reddit that (shortened) quote was frequently employed by bigots complaining about mod “censorship” of their “opinions”.

I’ll leave it to your imagination what exactly those opinions were.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

I find this offensive and yet I can’t find a single reason it’s not an improvement.

Oh my god I didn’t realize this was OC last time I’m so excited
