It’s partly why /r/StarTrek started it’s “be nice” rule in ~2018. It’s ok to disagree, but to just pee all over something someone liked for no reason other than the fact that they brought up that they liked it is exhausting.

Where are you seeing a VPS for $1/month that works well as a Jellyfin server for multiple people?

Still very cool, though. Thanks!

I used to be a mod on /r/StarTrek and everytime we did a fundraiser it was inevitably met with criticisms of some kind. I would usually respond with “That sounds like a great cause too, why don’t you post the receipt (we encouraged users to share recepits) for that instead?” and never once saw it.

I mean… good typeface design takes a particular type of creative mind, and is also extremely labor intensive. People get masters degrees in typography. A good font is not cheap or easy to produce. It makes sense someone would want to earn money from the effort.

Who got bent out of shape over Stamets and/or Culber being gay?

teenage redditors

Like, something that turned me off of nu-trek was how the representation was handled. It felt pandery to an almost gross extent.

you must be nu to star trek

it wouldn’t make sense to treat someones sexual orientation or gender to be strange

I’m struggling to recall if this ever happened, can you give an example of when someone’s sexual orientation was treated differently?

Edit: still waiting

Star Trek had a coming out story?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Are you sure it was in Disco? I’ve seen Disco twice and don’t remember a character who was closeted. What episodes?

I’m so confused reading this thread, what was less “casual” about the queer v straight characters in Discovery?

Can you elaborate on what “forced” means?

Ok but why is being served everything on a silver platter “contrived progressivism”? You mean because the actress is black?

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

it could easily have been set up to actually create a conflict

idk sounds kinda heavy handed on drama

Such a legend. During covid lockdown I dove into “I Love Lucy” (streaming on Paramount+™) and was surprised by the quality. When we think of old sitcoms there are a lot of cheesy tropes that come to mind, like “Leave it to Beaver” and “The Brady Bunch” but Lucy had hardly any of them. It was very original and funny, you can tell a lot of thought and heart was put into it. I’d recommend it to anyone!

Sad that you needed to include that title lol

Reddit also gets a little bit worse every spike, too. There are few mods remaining on Reddit who are doing anything more interesting for their communities than basic spam removal. Automod does all the work when all the largest subs just repost the same content and fake stories anyway.

It’s not like going to implode or anything anytime soon but the quality (from my perspective at least) has totally flatlined since June because why would anyone in their right mind invest creative energy into cultivating a unique community? I think that eventually a Lemmy community will pop up that simply couldn’t exist on Reddit and will serve to illustrate why I believe this model is better.

LOL I was thinking something with a structure and functionality that’s impossible to have on Reddit. But you’re probably not wrong either.

I’ve always wondered if people like you existed! Fascinating.

Not criticizing you, just personally I don’t want any recommendation algos in any of my media.

Corgana,
@Corgana@startrek.website avatar

Oh yeah it works great, I just don’t like how the algo feels like it’s trying to trick me into watching as long as possible. I enjoy the things I subscribe to but I don’t need YouTube to take up any more of my time.

You could not force me at gunpoint to go to r/all lol but I see your point. I just like to be more intentional about it.

I always find it a weird take when people treat Twitter before Musk like it was some sort of wonderful place that people enjoyed.
