Reddit also gets a little bit worse every spike, too. There are few mods remaining on Reddit who are doing anything more interesting for their communities than basic spam removal. Automod does all the work when all the largest subs just repost the same content and fake stories anyway.

It’s not like going to implode or anything anytime soon but the quality (from my perspective at least) has totally flatlined since June because why would anyone in their right mind invest creative energy into cultivating a unique community? I think that eventually a Lemmy community will pop up that simply couldn’t exist on Reddit and will serve to illustrate why I believe this model is better.

Oh yeah it works great, I just don’t like how the algo feels like it’s trying to trick me into watching as long as possible. I enjoy the things I subscribe to but I don’t need YouTube to take up any more of my time.

My pet peeve is when people call (Disco and onward) “NuTrek” because that term was created to mock the “NuMetal” Kelvinverse films for their shallowness.

Now it’s mostly used by people who complain about “wokeness” or “forced” diversity or what have you.

I used to be a mod on /r/StarTrek and everytime we did a fundraiser it was inevitably met with criticisms of some kind. I would usually respond with “That sounds like a great cause too, why don’t you post the receipt (we encouraged users to share recepits) for that instead?” and never once saw it.

Like, something that turned me off of nu-trek was how the representation was handled. It felt pandery to an almost gross extent.

It’s partly why /r/StarTrek started it’s “be nice” rule in ~2018. It’s ok to disagree, but to just pee all over something someone liked for no reason other than the fact that they brought up that they liked it is exhausting.

I mean… good typeface design takes a particular type of creative mind, and is also extremely labor intensive. People get masters degrees in typography. A good font is not cheap or easy to produce. It makes sense someone would want to earn money from the effort.

Such a legend. During covid lockdown I dove into “I Love Lucy” (streaming on Paramount+™) and was surprised by the quality. When we think of old sitcoms there are a lot of cheesy tropes that come to mind, like “Leave it to Beaver” and “The Brady Bunch” but Lucy had hardly any of them. It was very original and funny, you can tell a lot of thought and heart was put into it. I’d recommend it to anyone!
