Possible to have different desktop folders for different workspaces?

I am a “messy desk” person and like to have a big open visual space for all the pseudo-temporary files belonging to whatever project I’m working on at a given time. It would be nice to have a workspace specifically dedicated for “work” and still be able to create a fresh one when needed, without having to “put all...

I guess maybe I don’t understand what workspaces are? Because I’ve been operating under the assumption that I’ve been using multiple workspaces with GNOME for a* long* time now.

Are you saying the GNOME update in April will each workspace to have it’s own unique desktop folder?

Yeaaaah, likely the route I’ll take.

I’m not trying to diminish your experience, but it’s called “dogwhistling” for a reason. You, being in a secure happy relationship, are unlikely to hear it. But a deeply insecure young man looking to externalize his shame absolutely will. He is the target, not you.

I know you didn’t mean harm, and FWIW, this is not my opinion, it’s a central tenant to Incel ideology. Here is the exact same “joke” on the Incels wiki.

Again, this isn’t just some arbitrary opinion I hold, it is actual Incel propaganda. You are welcome to spread it wherever you please, I just thought that you might want to be made aware.

Meme-style dogwhistling actually relies on unwitting “carrier” intermediaries to spread and normalize the ideology. You see the same technique a lot with anti-trans memes too (“I Sexually Identify as an Attack Helicopter” is a common one that gets often repeated by non-transphobes).

By posting, upvoting and laughing, “normies” (emotionally secure people) play into the propagandists hands. A dogwhistle is not just the meme itself, but the entire social scenario around it. The real target of the whistle will see upvotes and laughter as reinforcement that the “unspoken ideas” espoused in it are true (there are a few in this thread).

If you are a newby FOR GODS SAKE USE UBUNTU.

Absolutely! I actually recommend Ubuntu for people used to MacOS, and Zorin (based on Ubuntu) for those used to Windows. Start simple and learn from there.

Yes! Well said. For me it was instrumental in finally making the switch to Linux.

TrueNAS shares help.

I’m pretty new to self hosting, so apoligies in advance if what i wanna do sounds stupid. I’ve had an old lenovo desktop set up with truenas for about a month now, and I was wondering if it was possible to have an smb share and a filebrowser instance use the same directory. I tried to set it up like this when deploying...

If you are more interested in running apps than having a NAS, I recommend trying CasaOS. TrueNAS is great, but I found CasaOS significantly more straightforward, especially when it comes to smb shares (it’s like two clicks).

Also TrueNAS uses ZFS which is good for what it is, but means you basically need a machine running TrueNAS to read/write the drives in case something goes wrong.

Compared to TrueNAS, CasaOS is more of a “platform for running apps”, but unless you’re storing dozens of terabytes of improtant data in RAID or something, it’s still probably the easier/lower maitenence option.

I love this question. My first thought was not a book, but Béla Tarr’s The Turin Horse which depicts the repetitive life of a Hungarian farmer and his daughter. Each day is essentially the same, with similar but ever-changing frustrations, and no hope for change in sight. The audience really feels their frustrations, but the characters also appear to have fully accepted the situation. The title is a reference to the horse-whipping that allegedly drove Nietzsche insane.

Not quite an “epic” in the usual sense, but absolutely repetitive and a surrender to economic powers beyond one’s control.

That’s a good observation! I liked how in “Her” the AI had the appearence of emotional intelligence, but you come to realize it was just using outputs that humans would respond to. Very precient for how GPT et al works.

Oh yes, fully kidding. On reddit that (shortened) quote was frequently employed by bigots complaining about mod “censorship” of their “opinions”.

I’ll leave it to your imagination what exactly those opinions were.

If you’re sharing with other people who don’t have a 4K screen or don’t have the bandwith to stream 4K, it uses a lot of system resources to transcribe 4K content down to something manageable, so some people find it easier to just keep two copies.

Thanks for educating me, what’s the difference between the three?

HoloISO is SteamOS for non Steam Decks. That would be great option for something that “just works” and is designed for use from the couch with a controller. I haven’t tried this but I’m sure there’s a way to install Kodi for media too.

Where Are All The Bicycles?? (startrek.website)

I have an issue in general with scifi totally ignoring the existence of bicycles, but star trek is particularly fun to think about since in so many situations beaming down in an away team with electric mountain bicycles would be incredibly useful in a basic utilitarian sense. Like shuttles, bicycles could be treated as...

I used to like Star Trek until this comment. I realize now that it’s all garbage and we have been robbed of happiness.

Corgana,

I agree, in my utopian future it’s possible to leisurely bike everywhere. Why hurry anywhere in a post-scarcity society when you can cruise around and take in the scenery?

I used to be a mod on /r/StarTrek and everytime we did a fundraiser it was inevitably met with criticisms of some kind. I would usually respond with “That sounds like a great cause too, why don’t you post the receipt (we encouraged users to share recepits) for that instead?” and never once saw it.

Such a legend. During covid lockdown I dove into “I Love Lucy” (streaming on Paramount+™) and was surprised by the quality. When we think of old sitcoms there are a lot of cheesy tropes that come to mind, like “Leave it to Beaver” and “The Brady Bunch” but Lucy had hardly any of them. It was very original and funny, you can tell a lot of thought and heart was put into it. I’d recommend it to anyone!

Oh yeah it works great, I just don’t like how the algo feels like it’s trying to trick me into watching as long as possible. I enjoy the things I subscribe to but I don’t need YouTube to take up any more of my time.

You could not force me at gunpoint to go to r/all lol but I see your point. I just like to be more intentional about it.
