Dagwood222,

This line from ‘Double Star’ by Robert Heinlein has stuck with me for decades.

Someone asks the hero for his solemn vow that he won’t divulge a secret. The hero says that if his simple promise isn’t good enough, what makes a solemn vow any better?

Dagwood222,

‘Fables’ was a comic book that was the first to use the idea of characters from fairy tales living in the modern era. When people realized that everything was already public domaine we got two shows, neither as good as the comic.

Dagwood222,

Or people could stop thinking small.

Back in the day, the GOP was completely controlled by Big Business. A guy named Jerry Falwell saw how Richard Nixon’s Southern Strategy had gotten him elected and jumped in. He organized his people at the grassroots level. If there was a local Republican club that got 20 people at the average meeting, Jerry’s church group would show up with fifty. At the start, they were getting dog catchers and county clerks in, but eventually their power grew.

Dagwood222,

A one word answer that covers so many questions.

Dagwood222,

Chocolate covered espresso beans. Think peanut M&M’s with a caffeine center. The only candy I’ve ever heard of that can actually cause a medical emergency.

Dagwood222,

Trust me on this.

Children under 5 get a giant Christmas card, the kind the whole office is supposed to sign. Little kids never get mail, so you’ll make their Christmas. Give parents cash to get whatever the kid actually needs.

Children 5 to 10 get a GI Joe or a Barbie. Doesn’t matter if the kid likes that toy, what matters is that they can trade it in the school yard. It’s like sending someone in jail a carton of Newports.

Ages 10 to 20 get cash.

Over 20 gets a nice bottle of booze. Even if they don’t drink, they can regift it easily.

Dagwood222,

Sandy is Worf, and outsider with strength and honor.

Dagwood222,

[off topic] From ‘Cheers’ Same and Woody are discussing music. Sam says that sometimes he’ll rock out to the real old time rock and roll; the Marvelettes; the Four Tops; The Temptations. He asks Woody if he’s ever heard of any of them. Woddy says no, but sometimes his Mom would have him listen to Devo.

Dagwood222,

Its’ all good.

Dagwood222,

“Tipping the landlord” Some landlord/employer posted on Twitter how none of their employees/tenants are grateful for the nice things the capitalist provides them with. They said that they’d like to get tipped occasionally. It might have been a shitpost, but it blew up. Now, ‘tipping the landlord’ is an internet gag line. No one in real life tips their land lord.

Just read an interview with the young actors from ‘Stranger Things.’ They said that one of the craziest 1980s thing they did was get on bikes and just ride around town, unsupervised. One said he looks around now, and never sees kids just riding bikes.

Dagwood222,

The funniest part of the story [for me.]

He posted on Twitter about his magnificent car collection, and Greta Thunberg posted back that he was a giant manchild [ or words to that effect] Offended, he got into a flame war. Meanwhile, there’s an NGO called GRETA, which works against trafficking. Someone tells Andy that he’s on GRETA’s radar. Incensed, he posts a video that gives clues to his location. The police use that video to find and arrest him.

If he’d acted like the powerful leader he aspires to be, he would have ignored the posts. Instead, he took the bait and got caught, just like a little fish

One of my favorite Trek adaptations. Star Trek Leonard McCoy Frontier Doctor.

Dagwood222,

I like when they give the hero ‘fifteen’ Ph. Ds

Dagwood222,

TOS is Gomez, a lovable, quirky, horny guy. Voyager is Morticia. Cool, calculating, and cruel beyond measure.

Captain America’s superpower is that he’s always on the side of good.

Dagwood222,

In my opinion, no show has ever done WTF as well as ‘The Venture Brothers.’

Take all the tropes you know and love and punch them in the ovaries.

Dagwood222,

There was an old Captain America comic where the Red Skull had a glass floor in his dining room so he could look down on the torture chamber underneath.

Dagwood222,

Back in the 1970s, The Moral Majority took over the GOP by voting. They would show up at every local GOP club at every event. If 20 people had shown up the last time they picked the new dog catcher, the MMs would show up with fifty people. They didn’t have a lot of money or connections yet, but they had people showing up all the time. Need someone to pass out petitions? MMs were there. Drive folks to the polls? Meanwhile, the Dems had counted on the Unions to do those jobs. That’s why the GOP hated the Unions and did everything to dismantle them.

No one is going to hand you power.

Dagwood222,

Babylon 5 had the right idea. Do an animated version; you can keep all the original actors and have much wilder special effects

Dagwood222,

Old joke. You can tell a contractor from a chemist based on how they pronounce ‘unionized.’

Dagwood222,

People need to vote.

If all the eligible people voted in the US, we could have universal healthcare in a year. Biden needs a super majority in both Houses.

Dagwood222,

Dogs like squeaky toys because the squeaks remind them of the death screams of small animals.
