Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...

Self-hosting email is not at all easy, and I’d recommend paying for hosted email from a service that lets you use a custom domain. Most will let you have multiple inboxes, although this may cost extra.

Then, just buy a domain (NameCheap is fine) and point your MX records at the email provider.

Yeah, that one is annoying.

What one?

Huh, that’s weird: when I posted, I saw your your comment as a top-level comment but I now I see it as a reply. Maybe it’s a Lemmy bug; I’ll keep an eye out in future.

Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them? (gadgettendency.com)

With support ending for Windows 10, the most popular desktop operating system in the world currently, possibly 240 million pcs may be sent to the landfill. This is mostly due to Windows 11’s exorbitant requirements. This will most likely result in many pcs being immediately outdated, and prone to viruses. GNU/Linux may be...

It is far too confusing what to use - even as someone who uses Linux on various servers, a media centre, WSL and used to run a Gentoo laptop I still don’t know which distro to use, let alone which of KDE/Gnome, X11/Wayland, init/systemd etc.

I like it, and I think the simplicity means it’ll be quite flexible.

We had a “kids tape” that had countless things recorded over each other. The second half was just a collage of the tail end of various cartoons and shows. When it got to the Abba-soundtracked documentary about a carnival it meant you were at the end of the tape.

Is there such a thing as a non-shit mullet?

Yup, they made the first commercial synthesizer. Moog rhymes with Vogue, despite what you might think from the spelling.

I’d definitely subscribe if you were to create that community here.

I’m going to use a version of this if anyone ever brings up the whole duck-quack-echo thing.

Also just the whole concept is wrong and encourages “me too” spam just to keep the thing from timing out and not being fixed.

Fair enough; I didn’t consider artifacts like logs and traces. I suppose a stale marker might prompt the original reporter to retest and supply fresh ones (or confirm it’s fixed in the dependency case).

In an ideal world I suppose we’d have automated tests for all bug reports but that’s obviously never going to happen!

Sounds like these 80 year olds need some friendly data hoarders to help them to digitise their collections. (Or for the BBC to promise to return the film, undamaged, once they’ve digitised them.)

Deebster,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Why would the BBC want old film, once they had the footage? They’ve already thrown them away once! It’s only of value to collectors at this point, and the Beeb can’t sell it if they’re claiming it’s lost.

It really is genuinely remarkable. If more people lived their lives like OP then the world would be a better place.

I moved from K9 to FairEmail too, and I think I’ll be staying as long as it’s maintained. I particularly like the focus on privacy.

If I read it, will I understand why “feet” is in the sneeze-causing list?

I always use whatthefont.com although mostly cos the name’s funny which makes it easy to remember. Any idea which is better?
