Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them? (gadgettendency.com)

With support ending for Windows 10, the most popular desktop operating system in the world currently, possibly 240 million pcs may be sent to the landfill. This is mostly due to Windows 11’s exorbitant requirements. This will most likely result in many pcs being immediately outdated, and prone to viruses. GNU/Linux may be...

It is far too confusing what to use - even as someone who uses Linux on various servers, a media centre, WSL and used to run a Gentoo laptop I still don’t know which distro to use, let alone which of KDE/Gnome, X11/Wayland, init/systemd etc.

We had a “kids tape” that had countless things recorded over each other. The second half was just a collage of the tail end of various cartoons and shows. When it got to the Abba-soundtracked documentary about a carnival it meant you were at the end of the tape.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

I missed the “90 weeks” bit - you made it sound like it was coming soon, you cheeky scamp.

Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. The current version, 22H2, will be the final version of Windows 10, and all editions will remain in support with monthly security update releases through that date.

Can it still be a favourite if I haven’t touched it in a decade? I still love Gentoo but I have enough shiny things to burn up my time.

Huh, that’s weird: when I posted, I saw your your comment as a top-level comment but I now I see it as a reply. Maybe it’s a Lemmy bug; I’ll keep an eye out in future.

Yeah, that one is annoying.

What one?

Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...

Deebster,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Self-hosting email is not at all easy, and I’d recommend paying for hosted email from a service that lets you use a custom domain. Most will let you have multiple inboxes, although this may cost extra.

Then, just buy a domain (NameCheap is fine) and point your MX records at the email provider.

Pi-Hole or something else for network ad blocking?

I’ve been aware of pi-hole for a while now, but never bothered with it because I do most web browsing on a laptop where browser extensions like uBlock origin are good enough. However, with multiple streaming services starting to insert adds into my paid subscriptions, I’m looking to upgrade to a network blocker that will...

Could you share a screenshot of your final result?

Oh yeah, that looks much better than any of the included themes. Nice work!

I like it, and I think the simplicity means it’ll be quite flexible.

Deebster,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Huh, there’s a lot of us calling software “beasts” in this thread.

Deebster, (edited )
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

It’s a very different kind of beast, but I’m very much enjoying it so far. Linking things is definitely Joplin’s weak point whereas this is a core strength for logseq.

I often used bullet points in my Joplin notes, so having that as the default works for me too. However, since Op has said they want plain text notes Obsidian seems like a better fit (although logseq does save pages as text it’s not what it feels like in use).

I’d definitely subscribe if you were to create that community here.

I’m going to use a version of this if anyone ever brings up the whole duck-quack-echo thing.

Yup, they made the first commercial synthesizer. Moog rhymes with Vogue, despite what you might think from the spelling.

Why would the BBC want old film, once they had the footage? They’ve already thrown them away once! It’s only of value to collectors at this point, and the Beeb can’t sell it if they’re claiming it’s lost.

Large parts of the rewrite came from contributors who had never worked on fish before.

That’s pretty useful alone.

And there’s this:

Thread Safety

Allowing background functions and concurrent functions has been a goal for many years. I have been nursing a long-lived branch which allows full threaded execution. But though the changes are small, I have been reluctant to propose them, because they will make reasoning about the shell internals too complex: it is difficult in C++ to check and enforce what crosses thread boundaries.

This is Rust’s bread and butter: we will encode thread requirements into our types, making it explicit and compiler-checked, via Send and Sync. Rust will allow turning on concurrent mode in a safe way, with a manageable increase in complexity, finally enabling this feature.

Also just the whole concept is wrong and encourages “me too” spam just to keep the thing from timing out and not being fixed.

Deebster, (edited )
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Fair enough; I didn’t consider artifacts like logs and traces. I suppose a stale marker might prompt the original reporter to retest and supply fresh ones (or confirm it’s fixed in the dependency case).

In an ideal world I suppose we’d have automated tests for all bug reports but that’s obviously never going to happen!
