I’m aware how Njalla works, actually that’s the reason I use them. I don’t want my name, my payment information or anything connected to my domain. With Njalla, I don’t have to give up any data and I can pay anonymously with crypto. I’ve used it for all my domains for years and I never had any issues. They seem very trustworthy to me.
Damn, that sucks. I have always been keeping my school/university stuff in a separate browser, so maybe your daughter can use something like Ungoogled Chromium for school and Firefox for everything else.
Ads are not only present in the browser. For example, there are Smart (not really lol) TVs that have ads embedded right into the operating system (reddit.com/…/unremovable_ads_on_my_2500_samsung_s…). You can’t install an adblocker there, but a DNS based filter will know how to deal with this. There are other alternatives, some are cloud hosted like NextDNS or ControlD, there are other local alternatives like AdguardHome or PfBlockerNG if you run a PfSense Firewall. There are also simple solutions like AdGuard’s Public DNS or Mullvad’s Adblocking DNS servers. If you use an iPhone or iPad, you can easily download a configuration profile that includes the DNS settings for these services. I think NextDNS offers a similar service. On Android, you can just set up Dns over TLS, I think it’s called Private DNS in the settings. DNS adfiltering can’t get rid of all ads though, e.g. YouTube’s mechanism for displaying ads is resistant to DNS filtering. That’s what uBlock Origin if for though.

Opera is owned by a weird group of Chinese investors, collects your data and sends it to China. They also use crappy marketing practices, and the Opera GX “Gaming Browser” is a fucking joke. And their VPN isn’t even a VPN, it’s just a proxy. Not a company I would trust, especially when there are much better options like Firefox.
I’m still trying to de-Google my life, little by little. I don’t trust Bing for similar reasons. DDG is feeling shady of late. What’s the search engine you all recommend that I can inject into my daily life? Is there perhaps a search engine that is focused on code, or have we just all moved on to AI for searching?...

Basically the same thing but it uses Google results. They are really focused on privacy too, they even are on Mastodon: mastodon.social/

They recently stopped using Google and Bing and created their own search index. It appears to be privacy friendly, but the company behind Brave is not ideal.

I’ve seen many many people recommend it, but I have never really used it myself. It’s not free, they charge $5/month for 300 searches and $10 for unlimited searches.
