Whelp, I am definitely going to be put on a list for seeing that.

Then those people should say that as an addendum or side-note to an attempted answer to OP’s question, not as a replacement for said attempted answer.

I mean in the technical sense, so shells ≠ cartridges, and sure they might be capable of it, but it is not really a thing that happens often enough for it to be a normal thing.

Prescriptivism vs descriptivism.

The technical definition is as I described above.

It’s only been expanded in common dictionaries because the dictionaries practice descriptivism, i.e. they reflect not what is the best definition, but how it’s most often used.

In other words, just because it’s in the dictionary doesn’t mean the word means that in a technical context; it just means that’s how it’s commonly meant when used in everyday parlance.

Exactly!

I mean, if you look in dictionaries, you’ll see both definitions, but as I said to another user in this thread, dictionaries include a definition because it is common, not because it is accurate. Just look up the term “literal”; most common dictionaries define it as meaning either “literal” or “figurative”.

Words exist fundamentally to communicate something; if a term is defined so as to be ambiguous, it has failed in that purpose.

I’m okay with tangents because I love learning about formatting & cultural differences. I think it’s fascinating!

And yeah that’s interesting because here in the US, putting a hyphen in between each section is typically much more common. For example, we’d write 123-456-7890.

I used to think it’s boring. I still do, but not so much ever since I learned it was invented by the Scottish.

our right wing president

He’s right-wing only in the sense that American politics is so far right compared to other industrialized countries that even the left-wing is right-wing in comparison.

Compared to America’s right-wing (aka fascists, aka Republicans (the party, not everyday people, though many of them too)), he’s basically Jesus.

But that doesn’t shield our … president from criticism.

Agreed, but criticizing him for stuff he’s not guilty of only degrades the credibility of actual legit criticisms. It’s the boy who cried wolf.

Clearly the system is broken.

On that we can agree.

Edit: Reformatted for clarity.

So since we agree, then condescending to me wasn’t exactly called for, now was it?

Okay, I’ve gone through my responses and can’t see it. Please point out where exactly I was condescending to you. If I was, then I apologize; that was not my intention.

If you agree that student loans should be categorically forgiven …

I do. Not by category, but completely across the board.

but he’s not a good person.

Agreed.

He’s got my friends and loved ones detained and/or deported.

I think that really sucks and I don’t blame you for being upset about it.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d vote for him over Republicans, but it really fucking sucks that that’s our choice,

I agree that that non-choice choice is a shitty situation.

and it’s not a reasonable request for me to not criticize his absolute dogshit pro-capitalist worldview.

I never said you can’t criticize him. I’m not opposed to that. I’m opposed to criticizing him for stuff he didn’t do, like claiming he didn’t attempt the shit out of loan forgiveness without being subject to asshole Republicans blocking every goddamn thing he does if it goes against their tyrannical wants, like petulant children having a tantrum.

Is there any future for the GTK-based Desktop Environments? (ludditus.com)

This article was written in the sense of bashing gnome but yet some points seem to be valid. It explains the history of gtk 1 to 4 and the influence of gnome in gtk. I’m not saying gnome is bad here, instead I find this an interesting to read and I’m sharing it.

Do not misunderstand me. I don’t generally use a lot of desktop icons. For the most part, the fewer icons are on my desktop the better, but I do have a few.

But back when Ubuntu briefly got rid of them, it sucked because occasionally I do want some icons on my desktop.

In short: if you don’t wanna use any, you don’t have to; just gimme the damn option.

Also, I never said I dislike Gnome.

Cyrillic isn’t just scrambled Latin script, the letters have different sounds.

No, I knew that. I genuinely thought they were saying to transliterate it according to visual similarities. Lol.

Visual similarity can cause a lot of issues with learning the alphabet, because some are what they look like (т, о, е, м, б, к, [х, but pronounced weird]), but others aren’t (с = s, р = R, я = ya, н = N, и = ee, з = z, г = g)…

That’s actually very fascinating…

They were either on here or !memes. I can’t remember. And I can’t find those posts either; they might have been deleted. Either way, the mods here might have noticed them on there and decided to nip it in the bud to prevent a political flame war here.

Again, I’m just speculating out of my ass here. Don’t really know. :)

(And yeah that makes sense. I usually browse Lemmy by New.)

Edit: Not sure I have the correct syntax for the community link above… :/

Edit 2: Fixed community link syntax. :)

I just use Newpipe on mobile and Freetube on desktop.

It kind of sucks that I can’t sync my watch lists anymore but you know what? I’ll live.

Really the only thing I use actual YouTube for for the most part is on my TV to watch shit with my spouse (we spend time together! 😄) and watching stuff immediately after I wake up.

Oh, I’m not saying you put it in the wrong community. Lol. Just that it’s fucking weird and it would go perfectly in there. Haha.

It’s not just Liftoff. It’s happening to me too, and on both Connect and Thunder.

Might be just an issue with the Lemmy framework regarding images. I’ve noticed it seems to have issues with images. Don’t quote me on that though. I’m no expert. Lol.
