It’s 1999 and I’m standing in a music store listening to a few new albums I might buy, while talking with the other audio nerds about upcoming releases and musicians I haven’t even heard of before.

I kinda miss it. Like Libraries, but I get to buy and keep whatever I enjoy.

The question is ‘Do they want to keep throwing money at techs in the hope of forcing people to watch their ads?’

At best, people will keep finding ways to get around the ads and YT will have wasted a ton of money on nothing.

At worst, a bunch of people will abandon YT all together. And YT will have wasted a ton of money getting rid of them.

Both options seem self-defeating and wasteful.

Plus, it’s likely to evolve into a “less ads” deal eventually.

The one constant is that there’s never enough money to satisfy corporate needs.

I don’t think we should underestimate the savvy programmers out there, who are just as fed up with ads as the rest of us.

And at this point, most of the cousins who don’t know how to update their adblocker are already there. It’s a matter of time. YT won’t keep pouring money into this. Just long enough to the “balance the books.” When the ‘number of viewed ads’ start slowing down again and they’ve hit their max viewership, they’ll call off the hounds.

I think the scary part stems from looking at ourselves. We’re well on our way “out there” but still kill each other in the cruellest ways. Our sadistic qualities only limited by our means to perpetrate them.

Hawkins shared his thoughts on this subject and, although less morbid, still quite scary.

How much does a creator's worldview influence whether you use their tech or consume their media?

Watching the drama around kagi unfold and it has me wondering how much you take into consideration a creator’s view on things like homophobia, sexism, racism, etc. when deciding to use a product. I think most of us have a bar somewhere (I would imagine very few on this website would ever consider registering on an altright...

I’m not really up to date on JKR to be honest. It was mostly an example of someone who was asked her opinion, gave it and it pissed people off enough for it to become an issue.

There’s a reason we shouldn’t look to celebrities for answers or anything other than the entertainment they supply.

It depends. People are allowed to have their own opinions as far as I’m concerned.

If their products are good, I see no reason why I shouldn’t use them. Even if I don’t agree with said opinion.

However, if they are actively making the world a shittier place for others, then I start to have a problem with them.

Like JKR not being pro-trans is just her opinion. And as far as I know, she hasn’t gone on a crusade against anyone yet.

But Blizzard encouraging the sexual harrasment of it’s female employees is a totally different beast. And I didnt feel right keeping supporting them.

But it’s a line everyone has to figure out for themselves.

I guess “Use your stupid” can be applied the same way “Use your smarts” is.

Like if ‘Your Smarts’ refers to rationale or deductive skills, ‘Your Stupid’ could refer to the lack thereof.

It’s politics. Newfound Allies have expectations. I highly doubt Zelenskyj really wants to get involved with Israels ever ongoing conflict at this point in time.

I’m just pointing out the most likely explanation.

But I have no doubt he’s more concerned with own people and that if he wants to keep receiving aid for the war in Ukraine he has to “play ball.”

It’s a shitty situation to be in.

However I don’t think he’s going to divert any resources to Israel anytime soon, regardless of the sincerity of his statement. So at least there’s that.

Hard to say. I doubt it though.

As insincere/foolish as our politicians can be, they do seem to take that part somewhat serious.

Like, Scientology isn’t recognized as a religion and such. The list of religions outside of the abrahamic ones is surprisingly short.

Seeing my city at the top just kinda makes me sad. Not that it’s not a nice place to live, but it does make me worry about everywhere else.
