Furbag, to lemmyshitpost in And I will die on this hill.

The only thing I could think of with the whole “1000 Mozarts” comment is that there’s a very real chance that if the world Musk and Bezos envision came true, those Mozart level geniuses would be working in an Amazon fulfillment center or a Tesla assembly line, wasting their talents as a slave to capitalism.

Furbag, to asklemmy in So is the US slipping into Civil War?

“Fuck yeah, secession!” Says the Texan from the comfort of their lounge chair, beer in hand.

These people are too comfortable to ever be willing to die for their stupid ideals. All it took was one MAGA idiot to get blasted on Jan 6th and then they all scattered like roaches. As soon as their lives were on the line, it was no longer a matter of grave importance. They all firmly believed that democracy was at stake, but were unwilling to fight for it to the death because they somehow must have known that it was bullshit, somewhere in the back of their pea-sized brains, they knew.

By the time Texas starts asking people to show up to mustering fields, rifle in hand, the facade will fall apart. Biden doesn’t need to do anything. This sideshow of bluster and saber-rattling will fall apart on it’s own.

It’s pronounced Gif, with a soft G as in Graphics.

I don’t give a fuck what the idiot creator thinks it should be pronounced as, I’ll die on this hill with my honor intact, surrounded by the corpses of everyone who thinks Jif is referring to anything but peanut butter.

Furbag, to starwarsmemes in I guess they don't have moisturizers on a moisture farm.

19 years of Luke whining will do that to anybody.

Furbag, to maliciouscompliance in r/steam (maliciously) complies with the call to open again

Not really. The traffic they're getting from it is unsustainable and any would-be investor who is paying attention will notice this. This is really more a tactic to shatter the narrative that the mods do not represent the will of the general user and they are forcing the protests onto them.

Furbag, (edited ) to memes in It's all downhill from here

I was searching for apartments a few years ago when I still lived with my parents. My Dad was frustrated with my search taking so long (basically accusing me of dragging my feet) asked me why I kept saying I couldn’t afford to live in any of the places near where we lived / my workplace (I live in one of the highest cost of living states in America). I made a bet with him that if he could find me an apartment that was within my budget of $2,200/month within a week, I would sign the lease and move out as soon as they would let me move in. If he couldn’t, he had to admit that finding an apartment in this area in this economy was not as easy as it was when he was my age (I was originally going to ask him to pay me $500 if he lost the wager, but he backed down from that so I took away any monetary incentive and just went for the moral victory instead).

Of course, three days after we made the bet, he came back to me and said “What happened to all the apartments that used to cost $800/month? These leases are more than what we pay for our mortgage!”. Somehow, he was still living in a reality so far removed from our own that he had no idea just how bad things had gotten.

People seem to forget that before YouTube partnered with content creators people just kinda… uploaded stuff that they were passionate about. They didn’t do it for a living and they did not expect payment but might have asked for donations if their channel was costly to run. Sure, the production value and editing quality was a lot lower, but the core experience was still the same.

This is why I flatly reject the notion that me blocking ads on YouTube hurts content creators in any meaningful way, especially now that almost all of them are partnered with some kind of sponsor embedded in the video.

Furbag, to asklemmy in What salary do you think would make you happy?

I remember a time when someone making “six figures” was extremely wealthy. Now six figures just seems to be the baseline for even having a chance at tackling home ownership in suburban areas. 120k is probably ideal. I don’t likely need more than that and it should be enough to pay for a comfortable lifestyle.

Getting there is the tricky part.

Raw chicken, maybe it’s been boiled if we’re being extremely generous.

Two different kinds of boxed macaroni and cheese.

Canned creamed corn, likely cold or lukewarm at best.

I’d maybe eat the mac, but since it’s touching a biohazard, probably not a good idea.

Furbag, to comicstrips in Offering solutions is annoying

Yes, I started doing this as well with my GF. If she is describing a problem at work or whatever I ask “Do you want me to tell you how I would fix this, or do you just want me to listen?” and like 75% of the time she already knows what to do and just wants me to listen to the problem and then when she is done she feels better because she got to vent, but sometimes she really does want an answer. It works out good for both of us.

Oh no, some liberals were being mean to me on the internet. Guess I’ll just vote against my own interests to spite them…

Furbag, to memes in Spare a dollar?

For those of you confused as to why being $1 short of the price would translate to $377/mo… This particular calculator factors in things like property taxes, homeowners insurance, HOA fees, and other recurring expenses that are paid for annually, but are typically deducted into an escrow account each month along with your mortgage payment so that you aren’t hit with a surprise bill for thousands of dollars at the end of the year.

Furbag, to memes in Then and now

Yeah sure if you just wanted entertainment maybe, but educational content for example requires so much research and double checking that it wouldn’t be possible without ad money.

Research did not begin when YouTube started paying people to upload to their platform. It was already being done. It might be more accessible to people who only do YouTube and do not get grant money for their research, but saying research wouldn’t be possible without ad money is nonsense.

Also, adding a financial incentive to upload as many videos as possible to get as many clicks and views as possible doesn’t sound like the way you encourage truthful, factual, and well-researched educational content to get shared. If anything, it would encourage a lot of low effort clickbait, misleading titles and thumbnails, opinion pieces, “edutainment” and poorly sourced material mass produced for a wide audience. Not saying that’s what happened, I’m sure there are plenty of channels that exist now thanks in part to ad revenue helping them get started and/or continue posting at regular upload intervals, but the Cobra Effect is real and people will always be finding ways to take the path of least resistance to getting their payout.
