JDubbleu,

It honestly blows my mind how many people on Lemmy are completely incapable of interpreting sarcasm. I know Poe’s Law and all that, but this is pretty clearly a joke.

JDubbleu,

I, for one, welcome the formation of the New California Republic. Washington and northern Oregon can join too if they’d like.

JDubbleu,

I’d highly recommend trying Vietnamese coffee. I’m the same way in that any coffee will do, but it’s become my latest vice. It’s a great middle ground between espresso (which I find a bit too strong) and drip/pour over coffee (which I like, but I prefer something a bit stronger). It’s made with slightly compressed grounds in a phin (Vietnamese coffee filter) and is basically just a slower pour over that you mix with a tablespoon of sweetened condensed milk.

It’s a very interesting flavor and tends to be much easier on your stomach because of the lower volume of coffee.

JDubbleu,

America Ferrera got an Oscar nomination for her performance in the movie…

JDubbleu,

Fair enough, but as someone who has worked closely with the Decky Loader maintainers and contributed my own stand alone plugin I get it. We basically all have day jobs as devs and it can be mentally taxing to do more PRs at home. Not to mention sometimes there’s just not enough time in the day, and I don’t even have kids.

Maintainers are ultimately volunteers doing work with hundreds of dollars an hour for free. I’ve had some PRs take 20+ days to be looked at, it’s just how it goes.

JDubbleu, (edited )

Hilariously enough, even at the theater, you’d get a better experience pirating the movie. Y’know, cause you’d ACTUALLY GET TO WATCH THE MOVIE AT ALL. Proving yet again piracy is a service problem.

JDubbleu,

The Flying Squid is someone who contributes to Lemmy comment sections a ton. They’re super friendly and also add a lot of discussion. Given the nature of Lemmy being so small though they stand out because they’re often leading discussions. Pretty much just a really good discussion contributor who is super recognizable.

JDubbleu,

From what I’ve seen one dude is salty and everyone else (including myself) is happy to have your contributions! I don’t necessarily agree with you on everything you post, but you’re respectful and actually back up what you say. I respect that a hell of a lot more than someone who I’m in complete agreement with, but plugs their ears at the first sign of pushback.

JDubbleu, (edited )

100%. This isn’t a dig at all. I just noticed how often I’ve seen their comments and now I can’t not notice it.

JDubbleu, (edited )

Edited the magnet link into the original comment. Seems like it’s a bit healthier than when I last checked but the more the merrier.

Myself and one other person have been upholding a torrent of the movie Holes since last June. My ratio is over 30, and I can only imagine how large theirs is since they were the only seeder when I downloaded the movie. I’ve cleared out some older torrents since then, but I’ll be damned if Holes ever comes off my home server at this point.

Edit: The torrent for those who asked

JDubbleu,

As long as you have the discipline to actually pay the thing off it’s fine. Many people think, “oh I have 0% interest, I’ll pay it off later” but never set aside the money to do so and end up accruing interest.

I never buy something on them I couldn’t immediately pay off in full when I hit buy. I’ve bought things in excess of my checking balance, but that’s because I had enough in savings (separate from my emergency fund), and my incoming paycheck would put my checking balance well above my credit card balance.

JDubbleu,

Short term credit balances like appliances paid off over 3 months don’t affect your credit for very long. As soon as they are paid off and the balance falls off your credit report your score will rebound. It’s not worth stressing about.

JDubbleu,

I’m usually excellent at finding shit like this and I got nothing in half an hour. I’m high as fuck rn tho so I’ll be trying again tomorrow because I’m officially invested. If I do by some miracle find it (I’m pretty convincing I won’t) send the money to a FOSS project of your choice, or your favorite Lemmy instance.

JDubbleu,

Because a more expensive PSU does not mean a better one. The efficiency ratings also don’t tell the whole story as power supplies are more complicated than their power efficiency. Use one of the many power supply tier lists to ensure you get a good, reliable PSU. I’ve seen some very expensive ones be absolutely awful.

JDubbleu,

I wish I could wear something like that, but it’d make me feel pretentious. Not that I think people wearing them look or come off as pretentious, but for me it’d feel that way. I couldn’t pull it off anyway since my daily attire is a hoodie and jeans/joggers.

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

JDubbleu,

Same. I play the same 5 games throughout the year and rarely buy anything, but a few games I’d been looking at went on sale. I could’ve pirated them, but it was just so much easier to click buy on my Steam Deck and instantly download and play them. Not to mention cloud saves for free, remote play, and the ability to dock the thing to my 65" 4k TV.

Steam has robbed me of more money than any streaming service ever could, and I’m not even mad because they provide the best service I’ve ever received no matter how many or few games I buy. They recently identified one of the biggest reasons for refunds and piracy being people who want to validate games will run well on their system, especially on Steam Deck. As a result they’re working on a demo feature so you can test a game before buying it.

JDubbleu,

It’s a gamble to get a used car you know nothing about when you have a truck you know is at least a bit reliable. My family grew up playing used car roulette and it’s pretty damn hard to come out ahead in this scenario. Best to run the thing until it dies while saving up for a new or like new vehicle.

JDubbleu,

I know a ton about cars, but short of taking the motor apart there’s only so much you can glean from a drive and quick once over.

Is this VPN comparison breakdown trustworthy?

I’m shopping for a VPN providers, and really struggling to find a detailed and non-biased breakdown of the various options. A number of years ago, I recall finding an extremely detailed VPN comparison spreadsheet that had 30+ columns, which were contained criteria by which the VPNs were judged both quantitatively and...

JDubbleu,

I did a lot of research a few years ago and settled on ProtonVPN. I won’t say anything authoritative regarding privacy as I haven’t done any recent research, but I’ve been very happy with the service so far.

I run a seedbox with all the traffic from qBittorrent tunneled through ProtonVPN and I’ve gotten up to 200 Mbps down through a few very healthy torrents before, and on dedicated speed tests I can pull down ~250 Mbps on my gigabit service. I’ve also never had it go down despite using the exact same server 24/7.

Their documentation is also amazing and they generate connection configs for Wireguard and OpenVPN on their website using provided parameters making it dead simple to get started.

JDubbleu,

The great thing about Linux DEs is that it doesn’t matter if it’s conventionally bad, it matters that it works for you. You could use the cubic alt tab animation and control your computer through seances for all anyone cares. As long as you can do what you want just send it and use what’s best for you.

JDubbleu,

As someone who grew up somewhere super flat it really doesn’t get to you because it’s all you’ve ever known. However, now that I live somewhere with hills it drives me crazy when I visit home.

JDubbleu,

It’s also possible they sell fewer green ones, meaning they produce fewer and don’t get as much of a benefit from economies of scale.
