Lemminary,

questions that we don’t have scientific answers for yet, or that science can’t possibly answer

I’ll be the Devil’s advocate for this one and say that there are very few questions that science can’t legitimately answer to any degree, like what consciousness is. But for others like why the universe became what it is today and how it works, it’s just not a satisfying answer for someone who has no interest or hasn’t studied physics and chemistry to a reasonable degree. Like, the way that we can partly explain a lot of what goes on from the flow of energy or that life’s purpose is to reproduce in biology, what a let down of an answer that is for someone who was promised a grandiose explanation of everything.

Anyway, what I’m trying to say is that I can see why people retreat back to religion for these answers. And tangentially, this is why I think we need more people like Carl Sagan who can genuinely paint our understanding of the natural world in a more awe-inspiring way for the average person without becoming a meme themselves like some of these other celebrities.

I’m well aware but I don’t mean why as in “why it is that it is”, but why as in how we got to where we are. “Why is the world round?” (spherical for the pedantics amongst us) is perfectly answerable by Science and it’s not an existential question.

Lemminary,

Your young niece sounds a lot like my elderly family. They’re conscious that they “just can’t let go” despite being very progressive and open to new ideas and they’re aware of that.

How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

I remember when it was just Hulu for $5 and Netflix for $8. Saved $50 a month from cable. Now it seems we spend more. I have four. Max, Peacock, Paramount and Hulu. Prime doesn’t count because it sucks balls. (Only paying Netflix when next Stranger Things and Squid Game is released). Curious to see what the average...

Lemminary,

None. I’d rather sail the high seas than waste whatever money I have left.

Does AI-generated art posted on lemmy bother you?

I find that i can spot AI Images fairly easily these days, especially the sort of fantastical tableaus that get posted to the various AI communities around lemmy. I’m tired of seeing them; it all looks the same to me. Was wondering if im being too sensitive, or if other people are similarly bored of the constant unimaginative...

Lemminary, (edited )

Some of these responses either have a weird and jaded agenda or literally don’t make sense. You don’t like AI art because of the smudges or the weird colors? Huh? lol

Lemminary,

“Yes” scribbled on the ceiling that you can only see if you climb this ladder and look at it with a magnifying glass.

Joke’s on you, my nose covers half of my view on both eyes.

What can the US do to help Mexico finally stop the cartels?

Politicians constantly talk about stopping the illegal immigrants that are coming from Mexico, but putting a wall has never and will never be a solution since the reason why so many displaced keep coming across the border is mostly to escape the crime, corruption, inequality, and violence of they have to live in their home...

Lemminary, (edited )

These are cartels, dude. They have people infiltrating the government and policemen who have been threatened to death to comply or die. Corruption is rampant at very top levels of government and part of it is fueled by the US itself, directly and indirectly. We’ve been waging a war against them for for decades and you know what they do when the local government “oversteps”? They go on shooting sprees downtown killing anyone in sight and go decapitate politicians so they can hang their heads off bridges. It’s brutal. This is not the USA.

There are so many things I’m not even touching that have happened in the past decade that make this so much more complicated than it seems. They can easily rile up a month-long standoff with authorities, as they did in Michoacán vs the local government and then the military. They’re well-coordinated and they have modern equipment, warehouses, free labor in the form of slaves, an underground network, connections to people in high places, and anything you could ask for to avoid the law. It’s quite insane.

Just to paint you a picture, a local government kidnapped and murdered 43 students who dared protest in 2014 with the help of the cartels in a top-down operation, and where 26 more people were murdered who dared investigate. That’s the level of shit we’re up against.

Lemminary,

Just a reminder that, while drugs are the cartels’ biggest income, it’s not the only one. They’ll just move onto produce and other goods like avocados and lemons. This was news years ago but I’m not at the computer to link.

Lemminary,

They’re displacing and controlling domestic farming operations. It’s the reason why lemons and avocados shot up in price a few years ago despite there not being a shortage. They essentially monopolized the entire industry across the northern half of the country and would squeeze newcomers out via intimidation and other mob tactics. At least, that’s what my family tells me who used to have a lemon processing factory.

Lemminary, (edited )

Yeah, that’s why they do end up legitimizing after some time for some of these reasons. lol So maybe it’s a good thing in the grand scheme of things, even if it’s kind of shitty for the people who played fair to get to where the others got for free.

The Godfather. And I don’t really plan on seeing it because I don’t like the genre or those tropes.

I hear good things about How I Met Your Mother but I’m too lazy to pillage it. Arrgh!

  • Lemminary,

Xitter. Part of me is very proud that I’m freely browsing gay porn on Musk’s dime with 0 ads or “recommendations”. I don’t even participate and I don’t use it for anything else.

    Lemminary,

That one random downvote on an otherwise innocuous comment:

    Lemminary,

That you can rotate your entire screen by 180° on Windows. I forget the shortcut key but I did panic a little when it happened the first time.

    Lemminary,

Nah, people do say “emails” all the time and it’s perfectly fine.

    Eg. “But her emails!”

    Lemminary,

Guise, I figured it out. Semi-automatic guns work a lot like vibrators which is why they can fire from the hip and that rubs their dick/clits while firing off a round. Think about it. This gun craze is actually a fixation on jerking off.

    Lemminary,

“We want your money, but we’ll do everything possible to discourage you from doing that”

    Ok! 🏴‍☠️🦜

    Lemminary, (edited )

Yeah, kind of a little bit of both. Assuming that this is about bacterial transformation, it kind of goes like this in the lab. It’s from 2012 so there are probably easier techniques with fewer steps.

And these (11:00-16:00) are the basics about bacterial transformation.

    Lemminary, (edited )

You’re welcome. slaps ass, zips up, winks

    Lemminary,

Sir, if the horse head is any indication, that’s an incentive to crawl for my gay ass.
