Hosting your own email is a bad idea. Hosting OTHER PEOPLE’S email is a REALLY BAD idea. Self-hosting mail on a vanity domain is a good exercise to learn how SMTP, DNS, IMAP and other protocols interact.
If you don’t like Google, Apple, or Microsoft then sign them up with Proton or another hosted provider. You don’t want to be the reason someone lost income because they missed out on a critical email from a client or their job application was blocked because it was sent from a host with poor reputation.
The complex part isn’t the hosting part. Its the security part, the reputation management part, the uptime part, the troubleshooting delivery part and basically every other aspect other than running postfix+dovecot

I’m not a Lemmy dev but I’m interested in this question so I’m commenting so I remember to check up on this one.
I subscribe to that sub because I feel like it’s important to engage with people that I don’t agree with. Even though the two main contributors to that sub are peculiar in their views, I haven’t seen them break any rules of lemm.ee or post outright hate to any group but democrats.
I know sh.it.justworks had their own drama with a the_donald popup community which led to calls for defederation before the community was banned but if people are posting within the rules and properly moderate their own; we ought to let them post their politics even if we don’t agree.
Property tax is like 2-3% of the property value in my area, the comment you are reply to is just suggesting making it 50% of the value of the plot annually for people who are buying their third property or commercial buyers.
I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...
Cloudflare sells domains at cost. If you use apple devices and pay for iCloud+ ($1.99 a month for the cheapest plan), you can get email hosting for your domain for the entire family + a catch all address.
You can run an email host yourself but it is going to cost more in time and effort to maintain than just paying for hosting. It’s not very professional if your messages go to spam due to low reputation or if you miss a message/someone gets a bounce back because the container running your mail server was down and you didn’t realize
Run mail on a custom domain for fun, to learn what it takes, but don’t do it for mail that really matters

The point isn’t to be so tricky to make it too hard for end users to catch it. It’s to train them to start looking at things such as senders domain and to report messages and avoid the link, etc.
Hi and hope all are well today. First, thanks in advance for any / all responses. Second, apologies if this isn’t the best place to ask this question....
Apple is a hardware company first, not an advertising and services company like Google and Roku, and not a literal massive online retailer like Amazon.
Apple TV is the only one that doesn’t have ads on its home screen. I use an Apple TV to play all my physical media that has been ripped to mov and re-encoded with handbrake
No kids these days still have that. It’s just some random film available on streaming. I’ve watched so much Trolls. Please send help, my kids won’t stop watching
I think it’s mostly people viewing the “All”/“Community” feeds. Which I feel like you have to do in general as the niche communities haven’t really gotten to a self sustaining point where you can check your “Home” feed and not run out of stuff to doom scroll.
Not to mention that if you happened to mention certain things in communities that are tangentially related (Windows/Nintendo/Apple) then it usually starts another off topic discussion on linux/piracy/whatever.
Honestly the linux stuff doesn’t bother me as much as every topic seemingly turning into a critique of capitalism.
I’ve put some thought into how to respond to this but I just can’t get past “capitalism bros” so I’ll just say this, you can criticize the current market economy system most of the west has without being a full on communist. And those that are content with capitalism aren’t going to go out of their way to be a “capitalism bro”. So of course dissenting voices to the current status quo are going to be amplified here. Try to learn from others perspectives instead of seeking validation
I recently got “this content is unverified, please open in our app to continue” from a Google search that lead to a random Reddit thread. Nope not gonna do that. I think I found a workable solution on stack overflow after that
It reduces suffering of potential unwanted offspring and the suffering of local bird populations so I would argue that it’s unethical to not spay or neuter your cat, even if the individual cat suffers a bit from it.
I think there is an interesting argument on whether it’s ethical to keep pets at all however
#1 Pets are like teenagers, they are gonna try to have sex without you knowing.
#2 I don’t think it’s healthy or ethical to keep an animal indoors 24/7. Even pet animals need unstructured (not unsupervised) time outside to have play and use their instinct beyond just taking them for a walk. I’d apply that equal to dogs and cats although it’s probably more important for dogs.
An open area where he can run around is probably best. Depends on where you live and your cat’s preferences. I’ve heard of cats that have no desire to leave the house and others that will dart out the door at any opportunity. If you have an apartment or no fence in the back yard then it’s not a great option. Some cats do like to walk, our neighbors’ cat usually joins us on our nightly walks through the neighborhood. Off a leash of course.
If you wear an Apple Watch DUO has a watch app and so I’ve migrated all my accounts that support duo to it so I can leave my phone in my pocket and just look at my wrist
Authenticator allows you to back up your passcodes to to your google account. I actually prefer DUO’s way of backing up 2FA codes by protecting them with a different password. I don’t like google’s approach as it basically means that if your google account is compromised then the attackers have the keys to the castle.
I just play the games that interest me, doesn’t matter the platform. Right now I don’t have a series S/X console because none of the current gen Xbox exclusives interest me. I play cloud, Nintendo, PlayStation, Xbox, and sega
I read the Jedi prince series and then the thrawn trilogy as a kid and teen. Jedi Prince does not hold up as an adult lol but was really good for my age at the time.
One thing I will say about reading EU novels is that it made hate the sequel movies when they came out for just throwing away the beloved characters instead of the expanding on them.
There are plenty of dead torrents with no seeders. What happens when the post you want to see has no seeders? Most people don’t keep their device on 24/7 and how many people access on a mobile device whose OS doesn’t support this kind of access?
Not that you feel less. But when you are young the experiences are brand new and the feelings novel and so the memories are stronger. As you get older you can still have these memories of strong feelings, such as your wedding, the birth of a child, or traveling but those novel experiences are fewer and farther between as you age
