Funny, for me it’s windows that I’m constantly battling.
Be it having to constantly restart and do updates that take forever.
Searching online and downloading then clicking through installers for software I want, rather than just going into an app store.
Having to manually remove ads from my start menu
Remove as much telemetry as I can (that of course accidentally gets reset by some updates)
I have dark mode set, yet so many programs (even first party MS stuff that’s part of the OS!) doesn’t respect it, so I get randomly blinded at night
Each individual app running their own updater services in the background
Having to remember to run disk cleanup every once in a while because temporary files and old update files hang around for ages, eventually slowing my system down and taking dozens of GB of space
There are some good things - Win11’s window tiling is genuinely excellent, for example. But man, overall, Windows is just difficult and tedious to use. The only reason people use it is because it’s the default. Not because it’s good or it’s easy.
Yeah but we aren’t talking heat-of-the-moment shoving someone into traffic during a bar fight, we’re talking heat-of-the-moment naughty thought during an aerial bombardment from a hostile force where his wife was killed.
Even if you pirate it, you still pay with the immense amount of data they take, even if you opt out of a bunch of it (which you can only do temporarily anyway).
Gnome was already pretty great for accessibility (for a Linux DE anyway), and I’m glad to see that it’s getting continued work.
Usually (understandably) it’s overlooked
Also nice to hear them actually explaining why VRR hasn’t been enabled yet - there are still kinks to work out. Reddit/Lemmy told me it’s just because Gnome devs are evil pieces of shit who hate their users.
I’ve actually come to think of Janeway as someone consistently written to be an inconsistent Captain, rather than 100% inconsistently written. Others are nowhere near as inconsistent as Janeway.
Once I started thinking of her inconsistency as being the result of trying to walk a tightrope of sticking to Starfleet ideals, as well as maintaining order in a demoralised crew in unfamiliar territory where they don’t have the support and full might of the Federation and its allies behind them, Janeway’s inconsistent and contradictory behaviour starts making a lot more sense and feels a lot more organic.
Fair enough. I guess it depends how you look at it. I was thinking in terms of UX, in which case it’d be Mint Cinnamon or anything running KDE Plasma that’d be the Windows of the Linux world.
Mine is Strawberry since it has a ton of options and plays a ton of formats. It’s also (distant) fork of Amarok 1.4 and integrates well with KDE Plasma. I’m curious what other people are using these days. What’s your favorite player?
I appreciate GIMP but nah, it’s objectively inferior to Photoshop by a long shot and development is really slow. I mean they’ve only just got to GTK 3.
It’s comparatively difficult to use.
Plus they insist on sticking to that infantile name. I don’t know how they’re expecting to get industry support with a name like that.
Don’t get me wrong I use it every once in a while but damn they’re so far behind it’s a joke. And the worst part is they seemingly don’t want the project to advance.
With Discovery essentially being the Burnham show, when I was originally watching I was 100% expecting the Burn to be some temporal shenanigans from Burnham, and that’s where the name came from.
I like Ezri. It was somewhat crazy to me that they never originally intended on killing her off to begin with.
Like, they created a race that can (sort of) Doctor Who style turn into a brand new person, and their plan was to never utilise that beyond one season 1 episode where someone steals the Dax symbiote?
That’s crazy to me. Don’t get me wrong, they did utilise the “I have multiple lifetimes of experience” aspect, but never intending to give her a new character was a little odd.
I really liked Ezri. It’s just really unfortunate what happened to Terry Farrell that made it happen.
Gates has always been a piece of shit and I hate how he became the poster boy of Reddit because he set up a tax-beneficial charity to clean up his image. I got doxxed for bringing it up in one of his AMAs.
Is it better that he gave money to charity than for him not to? Yeah, sure. But I won’t be fooled into thinking he’s a great guy. He’s a piece of shit with a great PR team. The world would be better without his shitty monopoly.
Mate, there are prominent US politicians saying they aim to destroy the issue of trans people, to find a solution to a the trans problem. What do you think that means?
Mint is good, unless it’s very new hardware in which case the base (so things like drivers) can be a little dated.
Look up Ventoy. It’s a tool where you can put multiple ISOs onto one USB drive and boot into any of them. You can use that to try out a few distros. Maybe Mint, Fedora, PopOS, Ubuntu.
