Xariphon,

So is every single Palestinian parent.

Xariphon,

Baklava. I love it. When my aunts make it it's always amazing. But holy crap if it isn't the most tedious, fiddly, obnoxious stuff to make. And that's if you're not also making your own phyllo dough... all like six miles of it that goes in a batch one vapor thin layer at a time.

Xariphon,

Just don't remind them how many pagan symbols are in there.

Happy Sol Invictus, everyone.

Xariphon,

I swear they picked the dude with the craziest eyes to play Gowron. Like. Look at him. Those are the eyes of an absolute fuckin' maniac.

Xariphon,

Of course they did. ACAB, all places, all times.

Xariphon,

Survived eight years of Catholic school and read the Bible cover to cover. Between the flagrant hypocrisy and neglect in the school system and seeing the contradictions and bullshit in the book with my own eyes (and how nobody in the church even remotely tried to live up to the good parts), I just couldn't anymore.

Then I read about the Bible and its history, from the Council of Nicea to the confession letters from later translators. I saw that it's essentially a multilingual game of telephone weighted with politics, salesmanship, cultural eradication, and so forth, and it really became laughable to me that any thinking person could possibly ever take it seriously again.

It becomes easy to dismiss the rest when you realize they're pretty much all telling the same fairytales.

Xariphon,

For people in need of a desk or table...

I'm an amateur woodworker and I could use the practice transitioning to furniture making. If you don't mind covering materials and shipping (from New York to you), feel free to message me and we can work something out. I'm not looking to make a killing here, but getting some practice while helping somebody out would be nice.

Xariphon,

I have to imagine she had an absolute blast playing this character.

Xariphon,

I always thought of "Shaka, when the walls fell," as indicating a state of shock, disbelief, or otherwise not understanding what you're witnessing, more so than failure.

Honestly I love interpreting Tamarian meme-speak...

Xariphon,

Having spent an unfortunate amount of time debunking bullshit statistics... yes.

Xariphon,

LOLCats?

I'm thinking you have to go way back, something like lolcats, advice duck, ceiling cat, something where if you remove it from the equation meme culture just straight up does not develop, or does not develop the same way or at the same time.

Xariphon,

I bet the AI version looked more coherent, though...

Xariphon,

Yes. Kes was artificially put into it and made a point of saying it happens only once.

As to them having a tendency to single births, I don't remember. There do seem to be few enough of them to indicate a population in decline, but...

If each couple can only have one child ever, their population would halve every generation, wouldn't it? That's... Isn't that wildly unsustainable, biologically?

I suppose they could represent an evolutionary dead-end...

Xariphon,

The thought just occurred to me: they talk about it being a big deal that the Ocampa only live nine years and... We assume they mean nine Earth years. But they never actually establish how long an Ocampan year is. If they have an orbital period similar to, say, Saturn, she could easily outlive Tuvok while lamenting that she "only" gets nine years.

Xariphon,

... I'm trying to remember what my gripe was. It's not anarchist enough? Too much vendetta not enough revolution? Book V had a vision for the future, Movie V only had revenge?

Fuck me guess it's time to reread and rewatch and remind myself why I thought that.

Which sequels/prequels/spinoffs made the originals somehow worse?

The Matrix is an often used example, but for me it’s the Alien Prequels - especially Alien: Covenant really makes the Original Alien much worse. When the original was released in 1979 it had the perfect Monster. A dangerous killing machine of unknown origin. The missing background of the alien is a big part of its scary mess....

Xariphon,

We could've had live-action Mara Jade. Darth Caedus. Tahiri Vaela!!

Instead we got Mary Sue Palpatine and Darth Emo.

I will never not be salty about this.

Xariphon,

It's not so much a feature of English as it is a recurring bug in the way people use the language...

If you write "of" instead of "have" or "'ve" you need to be taken out back and beaten with a dictionary, preferably until you can apologize to your ancestors in person for the effort they wasted in passing down the English language to you.

Incidentally, when did people start saying "on accident"? It's by accident! Has been for ages! Why this? Why now? I hate it.

With that out of the way... English isn't a language, it's five dialects in a trenchcoat mugging other languages in a dark alley for their loose grammar.

Edit: With regards to OP, "a cookbook" and "to cook the books" are similar phrases in English, too, but have, eh, wildly different meanings. XD

Xariphon,

Because feeding people is Communism or something.

Xariphon,

For years now I've responded to anybody saying we should "respect our elders" by saying "they just don't make elders like they used to."

It was easy to be old and wise when the world only changed on a scale of centuries. Now it's easy to see large cultural changes every decade or less; the wisdom of somebody who came of age in the 1950s is of no value today if they've learned nothing else since.

Xariphon,

Not me but my uncle had a meeting scheduled at the WTC on 9/11. Only reason he wasn't there was because somebody moved the venue across town the night before.

Xariphon,

Power Metal:
Powerwolf
Gloryhammer
Alestorm
Sabaton
Windrose

Pagan music:
Emerald Rose
Tyr

And then sea shanties, folk music, Irish (rebel and otherwise), labor/protest music, and the occasional bouts of pure randomness.

Right now I cannot get enough of Miracle of Sound. Dude just checks every box there is for me. It's like if every other kind of music I listen to got gene-spliced into one guy.

In no particular order other stuff:
Blackmore's Night
Clamavi de Profundis
Omnia
Faun
