Fwiw the word you were looking for was “endonym”, as opposed to the exonym of Georgia.

I can’t see your posts from Hexbear, by the way

Yeah looks like Hexbear is having some serious federation issues. If you’re normally a Hexbear user, you might want to contact the admins about it and see if they can fix it. Happened to my instance a couple of weeks ago too. Something about other instances accidentally being marked as dead.

Most of the articles I’ve seen have been making the same mistake I was trying to correct.

It’s important to note that the court has not actually (yet) found that Israel is committing genocide. It’s just said to Israel “hey, while this case is ongoing, make sure no genocides happen, k?” It’s more similar to a temporary injunction that a court might make against a company during a civil suit, because the court finds it plausible that they might end up needing to make a ruling against them.

Zagorath, to privacy in Mozilla says Apple’s new browser rules are “as painful as possible” for Firefox
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

Honestly, Mozilla doesn’t even have the resources to maintain a proper WebKit-based version of Firefox on iPadOS, when a large amount of the work is handled for them by Apple. (See, for example, the fact that it still does not support multiple windows, a feature that has been available since 2019.) It would seem a mistake for them to try taking on a much larger load of work when they can’t handle what they’ve already taken on.

Damn. I didn’t understand the joke the above user was making and was hoping that by understanding why it’s a switcheroo I could understand the original joke. But now I’m no closer than where I started.

No I’m familiar with the ol’ Reddit switcheroo. I don’t understand what exactly is being switched in this case.

For what it’s worth, though I don’t think I’ve ever had them in any form, I’ve heard that the poor reputation of Brussels sprouts is due to the popular way of cooking them in the '30s through '80s being to boil the shit out of them. They’re supposed to be quite good if you cook them the right way.

And then there’s Brassica oleracea, where it’s not even a family, but one single species that brings us a heap of classic veggies including cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, Brussels sprouts, and gai lan. If you expand to its family you can add turnip, bok choy, radish, wasabi, as well as the majority of source vegetables in the eponymous “vegetable oil”.

Car keys/khakis actually works for most English (as in the region of the UK, not as in the language), Australian, South African, and Kiwi accents, I think. It doesn’t sound like carrie though.

I wanna see something like this for other accents. The gimmick in this sentence doesn’t work at all in my accent because they all use different vowels (apart from earned and urn). What’s the Australian equivalent to this? RP? Scottish? I reckon the Kiwi version would be pretty funny.

Yes, but to know what is your left, one first needs to establish what is their forward. If you were previously on your front (which is itself not an uncommon sleeping position), “turn to face left” will put them lying on their right side.

This stuff really isn’t rocket science. I’m genuinely surprised to be getting push back here. If the goal is to tell people to lay on their left side, that’s what should be said. Not “facing left”, which doesn’t convey the same meaning.

@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

your left hand is always the left one. It’s relative to you, not to your direction

Right. That’s my point. That’s why I proposed using terminology that relates only to you, as opposed to the necessarily external language of the parent comment which used “facing”.
