afraid_of_zombies,

What does the UK know about English?

afraid_of_zombies,

Know the feeling. Feel so defeated. Fighting this losing battle against all the crap junk food people want to give my kids on top of the normal tendency of children to only enjoy bland food.

afraid_of_zombies,

I explained this to me children and how carts are for the weak. My then 8 year old announced loudly when she was shopping with mommy right by the carts “mommy don’t take a cart, those are for the weak”.

Wife wasn’t too thrilled about it and was even less thrilled when I laughed.

afraid_of_zombies,

Which is why you see empty carts at Home Depot in aisles. It isn’t an accident.

afraid_of_zombies,

Just imagine a Walmart that you are not hoping no one sees you in.

afraid_of_zombies,

It’s okay for some things. Like I bake and it’s nice just getting a big sack of flour. If it’s something you are going to use a little of every day and doesn’t spoil go to Costco, but unless I am hosting a party or something the local supermarket is fine.

afraid_of_zombies,

I can do that I just find shopping annoying. Would rather just know it’s a choir I have to do once a week. There is a store I walk to if I run short of something.

afraid_of_zombies,

Exact opposite of what I said

afraid_of_zombies,

I had a software developer job where they expected me to write code in Microsoft notepad, put it on a USB, and then plug it into airgapped computers to test it. Wasn’t allowed to even use notepad++.

Oh it felt so freaken good leaving that job after 6 weeks. It felt even better when I used my old manager’s personal phone number on a fake grinder profile I made. She kept a tally of my bathroom breaks.

afraid_of_zombies,

I hate this stuff. When I had a more devops role I would just VM everything. Developers need their tools, here is a VM with root. Do what you want and backups run on Friday.

afraid_of_zombies,

Same boat. I use dedicated laptops. This is for my old Rockwell stuff, this is for my old Siemens stuff, this is my normal laptop with AD stuff, this one for Idec, and the last one for Schneider. Pretty much every laptop at the company gets retired it becomes mine.

Also works for on site access. Customer needs support? Mail them a laptop. I got one laptop that has been in Canada, both coastlines in America, Australia, and Vietnam.

afraid_of_zombies,

I just wrote a script that let me know if usb devices changed and emailed me. It was kinda funny the one time someone unplugged a USB hub to run a vacuum. I came running as like 20 messages popped up at once.

afraid_of_zombies,

No, there is something called discretion. I don’t for example have to tell my wife what I think of her father. She loves him, my kids love him, I think he is a great father-in-law there is zero need for me to comment on his body odor issues to her.

afraid_of_zombies,

Just setup a fountain with a toxic chemical in it with a sign to not drink from it. Based on every party I have ever been on half of them will be dead in minutes.

afraid_of_zombies,

And I said that it is a pointless conversation to have. Tact is not discretion. Tact is the act of bringing up what needs to be brought up in a face saving way, discretion is not mentioning what doesn’t need to be mentioned. There is zero reason to mention this to her so I don’t.

Do you seriously do this? Tell your better half literal everything. Like if you noticed her brother was a bit ugly you would definitely make a point of mentioning it to her later.

This whole thing sounds performative and selfish. Like you want to be applauded for it. Have you thought about how she feels? Knowing that any mean nasty observation you might have will be pointed out to her in a passive aggressive way.

afraid_of_zombies,

Reminds me so much of a particular Philip K. Dick story. A solider’s tour in Korea is over and returning home he notices that everything is fake. Artificial sweetener, instant coffee, faux leather shoes, hair styles, etc. He gets the idea that the aliens took over the US and setup a few fake burbs for the soldiers returning home, to isolate them and eventually pick them off one by one.

afraid_of_zombies,

No it’s not. Paranoia refers to your emotions not your situation. Just because you are paranoid doesn’t mean you do not have enemies.

afraid_of_zombies,

It was a thing for about one week in 2003 in the Whitehouse and it has been mocked for twenty years.

Like the man committed war crimes because he said God was telling him to and the only thing we ever mention is this.

afraid_of_zombies,

I bought a pack of smokes and as I was walking out this like 14 year old decides to yell out “hey thanks I will get them from you outside”.

afraid_of_zombies,

Some local governments have rules that X must be done by someone in that area. Usually the mayor’s nephew. To get around it they are made into a rep for the company that does the actual work. No value whatsoever to the project, the users, or the taxpayer.

afraid_of_zombies,

Yeah but those aren’t groups I have to deal with unless I choose to. You really can’t get around the financial system. It’s not like I can take a 100 bucks and walk up to say a gas station and say “1 share please”. And before you say Robinhood keep in mind that you don’t actually own those stocks, they own them and you are just “managing it”.

afraid_of_zombies,

I am just thinking of my job. The client wants something stupid, I have to pick and choose my battles. When it comes time for me to hand over to fabrication I get yelled at. Never mind the fact that what the fabrication manager sees is the aftermath of my work. They had say 13 bad ideas and I got it reduced to say 6.

afraid_of_zombies,

Why would we be done? Most of this stuff is public record or easy to determine if you have a head for business finance.

afraid_of_zombies,

Because they are connected to them. This is what happened with Toys R US. Bain Capital bought control and made the company hire consultants from Bain Capital.

afraid_of_zombies,

Oh please my competitors are often using the same suppliers and they have the same type of beancounters we have. Especially in my industry where we have a bunch of overlap. Just recently I had a corporate partner put together a quote for something we normally buy but wanted them to buy it. They came back with a price within a few percent of what we normally pay.

There is a reason why the three letter agencies are so good at catching money laundering. They have data on what X type of business should be buying and selling at what markup.

I bet you can do it. Just start looking at your numbers.
