curiosity, originally. this was back at the very earliest days of slack and debian, some 30 years ago.

i am not 'obsessed' with linux itself, but i have a definite preference for FOSS over proprietary solutions.

i'll let you know...

ublock origin is published to the addon 'store' for edge and opera, in addition to mozilla's (firefox and thunderbird) and chrome. links to all are on the repo's main page https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock

they would never dare disrupt the cash cow with gays or queers, or atheists or 'non christians', or a realistic portrayal of a poor or homeless person, or too many brown persons.

that 'designated distro' for newcomers used to be ubuntu. probably still is. as much as i'd want to say mint or some other variant of ubuntu or debian that i happen to like.. 'one man shows' and distros with very small teams aren't what a new user should be going with. there's a reason why so many base off ubuntu. it's big. it's solid. and it just works.

i have several old systems for older games, going all the way back to a good ol' celeron 300a.

you ain't a joking. i see that all the time. searching for facebook, youtube, amazon, gmail, hotmail..... even 'binging' for google.

if a shitty new windows version was gonna drive users to linux, it would have happened already....

at least twice.

Black Friday (files.mastodon.online)

alt textthree rows with a barbecue on the left and William Wallace in Braveheart on the right. In the first row, captioned Wednesday, the barbecue is labelled “$899.99” and Wallace says “hold”. The second row, captioned Thursday, depicts the same. In the third row, captioned Black Friday, the there is a label with...

there's a couple decent deals on basic laptops.. that aren't shit-tier specs, either. that's about all i've seen--but then, i haven't been "looking" either. rent keeps going up, can't afford anything so i don't even bother to look at ads and sales on things that aren't absolutely essential to simply exist.

i do plan on going to wm on friday.. but later in the afternoon--for a few groceries.

have a manjaro desktop (with cinnamon) at the office that gets used daily. haven't seen this here.

it always seemed to storm whenever we went camping when i was a kid, and that's what all the campers looked like when you're stuck in a little tent during one.

i remember visiting extended family back in, i think, the early 80s. down in alabama or something. their traffic lights went green>yellow>red, as expected. but then went red>yellow>green.

ares35,
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

in many (maybe even 'most') american towns and cities, there would be too many drivers going on that yellow and not waiting for the green.

keep doing what you're doing; if you need to get whatever runs in windows out of a vm and on 'bare metal'--get a separate system for that and network the two to share files, if needed.

concept is 'workable' in an open, but small, tight-knit community.

but in general, if google can't read it--few eyeballs will ever see it.

at least once a month i have to dodge some moron passing on the right (and through empty, marked, parking spaces..which is not legal), someone who is either turning left or had stopped for me---in a marked crosswalk, and literally right in front a fucking sign that says 'stop for pedestrians'.

How to bypass a metered connection?

In North America, using Xfinity for reference. I want to create both a home NAS and offline Wiki/media backup. Problem is to get the amount of data I need would blow through my plan and throttle my speed. I guess I could try and do it over a longer period or download just before the billing cycle renews so even if I go over it...

leeching off a public wifi will be less reliable, probably significantly slower, and possibly subject to (unknown to you) use limits of their own.

pretty sure your provider has an unlimited option for a little more per-month. just upgrade to that for awhile, then go back to the capped plan when you're no longer going over its limit.

if you need to stay within a provider's monthly limit, just set 'speed limits' on your downloads so you won't go over for a month, and also so you have some bandwidth, and quota, leftover for other online 'activities'.

onlyoffice is what i use, on linux and windows.

i think that the libreoffice people should have re-joined openoffice once their main gripe (oracle) was out of the picture, which wasn't long after they split-off and released their first forked version.

ares35,
@ares35@kbin.social avatar

a combined openoffice project would be different than what it or libreoffice is today.

just be sure to microwave it in the bag before eating. just to make sure you're getting your daily dose of toxins.

ares35,

with a 'no late-fees' policy, truly is '100% off' (...your first 'purchase' only, probably)
