What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

There are a myriad of news articles here on Lemmy that display the abhorrent influence billionaires have on our society (especially the US, where I reside). I consistently read comments where the posters appear hopeless and despondent of the situation, while others jokingly refer to the guillotine....

bionicjoey,

This comic goes harder than most Far Sides

bionicjoey, (edited )

The word “soft” in “soft drink” is contrasting “hard” as in “alcoholic” (eg. “Hard cider”). Beer is decidedly not a soft drink.

bionicjoey,

I honestly don’t get this one… Like I get the comic but unless there’s something I’m missing I don’t understand the actual joke here. I know it’s a typical Far Side “what if humans, but animals?” comic, but I don’t get what’s being swapped out here. Is the joke that flies would call the news “poop”? Is the joke that the actual news is that there is poop?

bionicjoey,

The buds forget how dirty they are by the next time they come out

bionicjoey,

I was going to say that there’s hope yet for humanity. But then I realized that the books category probably includes doujins

bionicjoey,

Yeah I agree. I think the laws of supply and demand, when heavily regulated by a government that actually gives a shit about its people, is way more effective than any other way of running an economy.

bionicjoey,

I like Alexander as a plot device. I do not like Alexander as an actual onscreen character

bionicjoey,

On second thought, let us not to to !risa. 'tis a silly place.

bionicjoey,

the civilizations that currently exist that don’t have that connection

Like which?

bionicjoey,

I love the sheer number of TFS comics that are just “what if people, but animals?”

bionicjoey,

Could be because one is a religious symbol and the other is a cultural symbol. There is a case to be made that government personnel shouldn’t be allowed to openly display their religious affiliation in a secular society, in order to preserve the separation of church and state. Not saying I agree with that perspective, but it is a hot topic of debate in many parts of the world today.

bionicjoey,

To give a more serious answer, Bajorans seem very theocratic and I think most of them would fundamentally disagree with the concept of a secular government.

Bajor exists in a weird gray area since their religion is in some ways literally real. In some ways the Bajorans are like the Vorta and the Jem’Hadar. Their “gods” are provably real, they interact with them regularly, and they have demonstrated to them that they have what seem to be supernatural powers.

Also, critically for the Bajorans, not only are their gods real, but their demons (Pa Wraiths) are real as well. And that opens up a whole other philosophical can of worms. In a way it reminds me of Warhammer 40k. In that universe, religion isn’t irrational. In fact it’s completely rational. Because Chaos is real, and it will fuck you up if you aren’t religious.

bionicjoey,

Did Gary Larson think Alexander the Great was a medieval figure? This comic looks medieval, their clothes look medieval… And I’m pretty sure he’s drawn comics of people in togas and stuff so he has some knowledge of bronze age Greece looking different from medieval Europe. Maybe he just didn’t want to overthink this one.

bionicjoey,

Perfect for long bike rides a wanderin’ beneath the clear blue sky

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

bionicjoey,

Well the app it creates on your device is not open source. The patch is, but the actual software being run isn’t.

Also you can just use actual quotation marks my dude, no need to say “quote end quote” like some kind of Dan Carlin impersonator

bionicjoey,

If that was their reasoning, they should say that rather than vaccuously claiming that it “harms creators”

bionicjoey,

Why don’t you cool it with the anti-Bajoran remarks

bionicjoey,

Riker isn’t Canadian! Haven’t you seen Lower Decks‽

bionicjoey,

The LD version seems plausibly the same dimensions as the second pic, if you notice how Tendi appears to be positioned lengthwise under Rutherford’s back. Assuming that Tendi and Rutherford are both smaller than Riker, which seems to be the case.

bionicjoey,

The level equals the number of kids you’ve had. Genghis Khan was the first dad ever able to take a prestige class

bionicjoey,

Plus, the bullets are part of a cat’s physiology and unloading their guns is considered radical surgery
