No, I’d actually be interested in that myself. I currently just rsync to another server.

bjoern_tantau, to asklemmy in What's something you'd like to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new year?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Long Covid.

Being woken up by fireworks wasn’t conducive of healing, though.

For protection against ransomware you need backups. Ideally ones that are append-only where the history is preserved.

@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

OSX and Linux both use the Common Unix Printing System. It works more or less the same on both systems.

bjoern_tantau, to selfhosted in Do any of you have that one service that just breaks constantly? I'd love to love Nextcloud, but it sure makes that difficult at times
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Only complaints I have with Nextcloud are that it’s slow and updates suck over the web interface. But apart from that it has been reliable. I’m not running it through Docker. In fact, my installation is so old that the database tables still have an oc_ prefix.

bjoern_tantau, to piracy in What linux program do you use to rip CDs (just audio)
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I usually use grip, but I think that’s not maintained anymore.

Dragging and dropping in KDE usually works as well. It has a built-in ripper, presenting an audio cd as wav, ogg, mp3 or flac files.

bjoern_tantau, to lemmy_support in Question about the federation system
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

It might also be possible that federation is broken. There are some issues in the newest Lemmy version.

I see this as well. But maybe it applies only to your own instance where you are an administrator. I will try locking this post for comments.

BTW: It only just now arrived at my instance.

Edit: Yeah, it isn’t stickied at lemmy.ml/post/9847234

Did you look at lemmy.yml, line 208 like the error message says?

bjoern_tantau, to asklemmy in Who doesn't use an adblocker and why?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I’m so proud of my kids who will demand adblockers if something in their YouTube app or their browser is broken. Even though they like to see toy ads now and then. But when they get the amount a regular mortal receives it’s too much, even for them.

bjoern_tantau, to baldurs_gate_3 in Pro tip: use those empty pouches/ backpacks for item organization
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

With the gamepad UI you can’t search by terms. But searching by type or sorting is usually enough for me.

bjoern_tantau, to asklemmy in What are your best flight tips and tricks?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

No matter how much experience you have as a pilot. You should always use checklists for routine operations and emergencies.

bjoern_tantau, (edited ) to asklemmy in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

How about Wally Gubbins? A series of silly skydiving videos. My father has a ton of them on VHS. I loved it as a kid. I just looked, you can even find them on YouTube. So maybe not that obscure.

In terms of software I remember having several ad games. So, games that are basically just an ad. I had a Bifi game. Some weird game about colours where I don’t remember what it was for. And a “game” about Chesterfield Cigarettes. I remember that I had to install QuickTime Player to run it. It was basically like Google Streetview when you walked into buildings with a few interactive elements put in. No idea where I got it. Might even still have the CD somewhere.

Edit: I found the Chesterfield thing: archive.org/details/see_you

bjoern_tantau, to lemmy_support in Version 0.19.1 outgoing federation issues for anyone else?
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Yeah. Had the problems with 0.19.0. Thought it was fixed with 0.19.1. But I guess it was just the restart that fixed it temporarily. Now I’ve got to remember to check every now and then if my comments federated.
