I think it would be easier to go to thebank now and then to exchange some of your $100 for lower value bills than to do the opposite.

Besides, if there are places that don’t take bills less than $20, there are a lot of places that aren’t going to let you pay with only $1 bills. I can’t imagine a car dealership letting you do that. Or if you want to buy a home, etc.

(Constructively) What is your least favorite distro & why?

I’ve been distrohopping for a while now, and eventually I landed on Arch. Part of the reason I have stuck with it is I think I had a balanced introduction, since I was exposed to both praise and criticism. We often discuss our favorite distros, but I think it’s equally important to talk about the ones that didn’t quite hit...

I was an Ubuntu fan many moons ago. Then I fell in love with Mint when it was just all around a better version of Ubuntu.

Then I ended up with a new Windows laptop for years and forgot about Linux entirely. But this year, I’ve actually returned to Ubuntu. I like how it has a fresh and different look and it still performs well on my now aging laptop. Mint is always my go to recommendation to others, but I just wanted a different look than your standard Windows-like look that Cinnamon has. I was initially turned off way back when, when Ubuntu switched to Unity, but now a difference in look appeals to me. We’ll see if I get annoyed with Snaps or not. So far, everything has been running smoothly.

If there was a GNOME fork of Mint, I’d likely be using that. I get that you can technically install whatever desktop environment in whatever distro you want, but for compatibility sake, it’s best to roll with what your distro comes with.

dingus,

Sorry, I think you meant to post this in the “best distro” thread

dingus,

Worth noting that it’s totally normal to see a lot more of them if you’re looking at a bright blue sky. That’s when they’ll be more apparent.

dingus,

It kind of does when they move across the country

dingus,

Idk…they aren’t chronically online like I am. They lead a very busy life and probably didn’t even like me much to begin with.

dingus,

I wouldn’t have befriended my one coworker so I wouldn’t be so upset when they left

dingus,

Well, thankfully I feel like he’s statistically unlikely to all that much longer.

Maybe a hot take, but I actually DO get why even adults like the theming of Disney World/land and like to visit it so much. The theming is just so intricately done that it’s honestly very impressive and great to look at and just take in. When you hear about the way some of these art pieces were designed it just makes it that much more amazing imo.

But why are some of these people obsessed with the people in costumes that are clearly meant for toddlers? I don’t marvel at some sweaty tween in a weird furry costume. I don’t get it.

Your keyboard should have two nubbins on it so you can easily find the F key without looking (it puts your hands in the home row). If your keyboard doesn’t have these, then either it’s 100 years old and someone is typing with the force of a gorilla, or you have an extremely strange keyboard.

The real tricky part are the less used symbol keys.

Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

I have an eight-year-old laptop that needs replacing and I’m paralyzed. What are the most reliable ones now? Do I need a desktop for CAD? Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?) Browsers ditto? Where do I find answers that aren’t just product marketing?

dingus,

With all the die hard Linux enthusiasts in the fediverse, it’s nice to see such a sane and reasonable take. Linux is great for hobbyists and for specific use cases and I’ve been there, but it doesn’t really make sense for the general consumer who just wants shit to work.

dingus,

Also wild to me are people that bring their drinks into public bathrooms like WTF

dingus,

I’m ignorant to all this, but I found that weirdly my mouse’s gesture features are broken on Wayland. So X11 it is then.

They are intro distros, sure, but don’t ever think that you have to move to anything else if you don’t want to. Mint is probably the best Linux distro there is if your goal is ease of use, support, and “it just works”. I’d say that’s more than enough for what people want in an OS. I recommend it to anyone looking to hop into Linux, be it temporarily or permanently. People jump into other distros for specific use cases or because they feel like fucking around with something…but that’s absolutely not required or necessary to be a Linux user or advocate.

dingus,

I am likely asexual as well and I only had a sex related dream maybe once in my lifetime. Never had sex either, although I’m not necessarily totally opposed to eventually trying it.

Just imagine sitting down and eating five fucking dozen eggs to start your day. Gaston is insane.

dingus,

You have to admit, it’s still better than having a singular email address that everyone has the login to.

dingus,

Yeah I’ll bet ours just stamped it or something! Surprised more people didn’t try to pull one over on my dumb ass haha

Why are we required to sit down when getting our blood pressure taken? Would the results be affected if we were standing?

when patients get their blood pressure taken at the doctor’s office, the doctor requires you to sit, legs uncrossed. But what would happen if we stand up to get our blood pressure taken? can we stand? or do we have to sit? And why?

dingus,

No, that’s just because your doctors office (like many) is slow.

dingus, (edited )

Me when I fall down the stairs and hit my head

dingus,

Where did you get these pictures of me???

dingus,
