dingus,

Worth noting that it’s totally normal to see a lot more of them if you’re looking at a bright blue sky. That’s when they’ll be more apparent.

Maybe a hot take, but I actually DO get why even adults like the theming of Disney World/land and like to visit it so much. The theming is just so intricately done that it’s honestly very impressive and great to look at and just take in. When you hear about the way some of these art pieces were designed it just makes it that much more amazing imo.

But why are some of these people obsessed with the people in costumes that are clearly meant for toddlers? I don’t marvel at some sweaty tween in a weird furry costume. I don’t get it.

Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

I have an eight-year-old laptop that needs replacing and I’m paralyzed. What are the most reliable ones now? Do I need a desktop for CAD? Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?) Browsers ditto? Where do I find answers that aren’t just product marketing?

dingus,

With all the die hard Linux enthusiasts in the fediverse, it’s nice to see such a sane and reasonable take. Linux is great for hobbyists and for specific use cases and I’ve been there, but it doesn’t really make sense for the general consumer who just wants shit to work.

When I worked as a cashier in a grocery store many years ago, someone gave me some checks to pay their bill. I didn’t even look at the damn thing, just inputted the numbers it said and started running them through the check machine. It seemed to go through the machine correctly.

But just then the manager ran over and stopped the transaction. They were fake checks.

I guess silly me assumed things would just automatically not go through in the modern age, but I guess it showed me that I really have no idea how check machines like that work.

Still don’t, but I don’t work that job anymore so it doesn’t matter.

dingus,

I feel like I need glasses to see this meme

Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee

When I was a kid, I swear the lyrics sounded like “later we’ll have some fucking pie”, but it’s “later we’ll have some pumpkin pie”.

dingus,

That’s actually super interesting! I thought it would have been technical, but it looks like it just comes from someone’s name!

dingus, (edited )

If you don’t want to figure out some awkward balancing techniques, you can just use a balance tube. Fill a tube with water to a similar height of the tube it opposes.

What an incredibly bizarre prompt.

Your assets can be divided up evenly when you die, making the whole thing moot.

Edit: Wait…OP are you describing your siblings or something? Lol.

Is there a forum for people who are lonely and sad but specifically not incel sickos?

like you know you’re a good person at heart but life circumstances and trauma and bullying and etc prevented you from learning the proper social skills to find companionship. not necessarily a forum to actually find friends (i find going into things with that intention feels fake and weird), but rather a forum to commiserate...

dingus,

I feel you, man. I had never been able to make connections in my entire life and so I always sought it out online.

A decade or so ago I was hitting up forums to interact with others. Now, I use Discord. A word of warning…Discord is primarily filled with young teens, which can feel a bit awkward and creepy if you’re an adult. And I just don’t relate to problems that teens do anymore like school and the like.

I specifically search for communities like 18+, 21+, 25+, etc. servers so I can relate to everyone more and feel more comfortable. There are some websites out there that provide listings of public Discord servers. So I generally google around until I find ones that look interesting and try them out. You might have to join quite a few until there is one that suits you, but I’d recommend it.

dingus,

People say this shit all the time. “Reddit is social media too dura hurr.”

But anonymous social media sites are an entirely different entity and wildly different experience compared to ones that use your actual name.

dingus,

In the internet age, it’s incredibly easy to look up personal information about people like their address. Sorry, but you likely are easily searchable just like the rest of us.

dingus,

Kanye had some real bangers early in his career. I still listen to them and have them in my playlist.

dingus,

I can’t turn on the sound while I’m at work so maybe it explains it…but doesn’t the idea of adding water to the towel to expand it defeat the purpose of a towel? Like if I’m wiping up a spill, a soaking wet rag isn’t going to be super helpful. I guess it depends what you want to use it for. Maybe I’m just caught up on the world “towel” when it’s really more like an expandable wet wipe. Idk.

I mean, on paper snoozing sounds stupid, but it feels so fucking good. Hard to stop something that feels good like that. Falling asleep at night feels ok, but falling back asleep in the morning after you’ve just been woken up feels so goddamn good. I don’t know what heroin feels like, but I wonder if it’s like that.

OP, I haven’t done that lately, but I used to be a person who would chronically turn off their alarm while still half asleep. I wouldn’t remember doing it and I would wake up late because my alarm was shut off. I tried so many different tricks to help me get up on time and I finally figured out what works for me personally…

What has worked for me for years now is to have two devices with an alarm. The device physically closest to me (my phone, often on the nightstand or in the bed itself) will ring first. As a failsafe in case I turn it off without realizing, I have a second device with an alarm across the room from me that will ring some time after the first. Because you have to get up to shut off the second alarm, it’s much harder to do it while half asleep. And because you already woke up at least briefly to shut off the first alarm, you’re more likely to hear the second one and not miss it because it’s too far away.

I figured this out after years and years of being a frustratingly chronically late person in high school and college. Once I was an hour or two late to a freaking final exam in college and the professor was nice enough to still let me take the exam. It’s been a struggle, but after employing my current method, I haven’t had many issues.

Is there a Spotify alternative that has no ads?

I pay for Spotify for 7 years or so now and i'm so sick of all the ads. After every update there seems to be an: oops, sorry, you have ads now. Podcasts are filled with ads. I was just listening to a podcast where they shoved in 3 ads mid-sentence. How long until musicians put ads in their songs. I'm just so sick of it.

dingus, (edited )

It’s weird, I’ve seen quite a few posts like the OP relatively recently complaining about how Spotify premium suddenly has ads now. Yet I’ve had a premium subscription for 10 year now (rip my $$$) and have yet to hear a single ad since subbing. Well, unless it’s a sponsored segment placed in there by the creator.

Maybe it’s because I don’t listen to many podcasts? But even when I have, I have literally never heard a Spotify ad. Maybe the specific podcasts I’ve listened to don’t have the “feature” that OP describes.

Maybe it’s regional? Maybe it’s an error? Maybe OP doesn’t recognize ads placed there by the content creator?

I work in the surgical pathology department in a hospital.

Anything you get removed from surgery comes to me to be examined. Then I describe what I have and what sort of pathology I can see with the naked eye. I select and cut out pieces of tissue that are important to the case. The tissue undergoes further processing and eventually reaches the desk of a pathologist (a type of physician) who examines the tissue microscopically, forms a diagnosis, and ultimately signs out the case.

My job can assist with several things depending on the case…

  1. To help the clinician confirm or determine what type of lesion or disease process the patient has
  2. To document and confirm that a surgery was necessary
  3. To stage cancer cases
  4. To determine whether or not a cancer or lesion has been completely removed from the patient and there is none left inside their body
  5. To make sure the patient does not have an unsuspected cancer

I see everything from tiny boring specks of tissue they biopsy during a colonoscopy to large cancer resection cases.

The other day, I got an almost entirely necrotic above the knee amputation with maggots. A few days before that I got a 9 lb spleen. It’s fun in the lab.

In the US, my job generally requires a very specialized 2 year master’s degree (on top of a bachelor’s degree in any subject). In other countries, the role of my job can be fulfilled by different types of people depending on the country and education will be different.

I found out about the job on Google lol. I was looking for something hands on in healthcare or anatomy related, but I didn’t like patient contact. I would probably select this career again if I had a second go around. It pays pretty well and is interesting. But grad school in the US is very expensive.

Like it or not, Lemmy is a bit of an odd, fringe community with a lot of fringe ideals.

I use Google products and don’t give a shit about FOSS services or intense privacy. It’s an unpopular view here in Lemmy, but it’s actually how the majority outside of it seem to behave.

I didn’t join Lemmy because of FOSS or privacy nonsense. I joined it because spez got rid of my Reddit app and I don’t want to use some cancerous app with a zillion ads plastered everywhere.

Look, don’t get me wrong…I am against the idea of megacorps as a whole, but not enough to stop using something that makes my life a zillion times easier and doesn’t actively hurt me.

dingus,

Medical staff actually DO sometimes write on the appendage that they are supposed to operate on as one of their checks.

dingus,

Meanwhile I got leg amputations where the patient paints their nails before the leg is looped off lol

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

dingus,

The problem is I like memes…I just don’t want to ONLY see memes. It’s just that Lemmy’s sorting algorithm is not as robust as Reddit. With Reddit my subscription feed would show me all of my communities, even if there was a large difference in size of them. My small communities still showed up in my subscriptions feed because Reddit had a more balanced algorithm. With Lemmy, the most popular communities flood out all the others. If the devs made the sorting work better we could have a more balanced experience.

dingus,

Ehh…I disagree with this if we are specifically talking about what the OP is referring to.

When you’re a child, everything is new, making all of it exciting. For example…as a child, OP had only experienced winter a few times. As an adult, they’ve experienced countless winters. It becomes routine instead of new and so it fades into the background. And with adult obligations to worry about, we don’t have that worry free child mind that can drift off like that. It’s just part of getting older.

OP, sometimes it’s worth making a conscious decision to stop and take a moment to notice and experience your surroundings. There’s a thunderstorm outside? Grab a warm cup of coffee and just try to watch and listen for a moment. If possible, open a window (that won’t let rain in) or sit outside under an awning and just take in all of your senses. Go out for a walk without any music and without using your phone. Try to look at the trees and birds around you and take it in. Smell the air…has the grass been recently cut? Has it rained recently? Is there mud around? Is someone nearby grilling some food? Are there leaves on the ground? Try stepping on one. Do they crunch or are they soft and wet?

As a child, everything is new. As an adult, it’s routine and boring. But you can still manage to capture a small bit of this feeling back if you actively decide to stop from time to time and consciously try to take in your surroundings for a moment. Stop and try to feel all of your senses.

You can never make these feelings new again, but sometimes I find some satisfaction in watching and listening to the world around me.
