Thanks for the artist view on things. :)

I mostly want something pretty to look at but adding a message to it is an excellent idea.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Yes, I’ve got quite a few types, good idea.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Already have a few of those, always a good party gag for the ones that know.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Will have to try that, also a good way to one-up my neighbor with those CDs hanging outside. :)

I have like 30 old hard drives laying around and have been thinking about doing a cool art installation with them for a while.

Maybe shatter the platters to create a spiky landscape and epoxy them in, or something like that.

Any ideas?

Proxmox HA, Docker Swarm, Kubrenetes, or what?

I’ve gotten to the point where I have more than a few servers in my homelab and am looking for a way to increase reliability in case of an update. Two problems: 2 of the servers will be on Wifi and one is a Synology NAS. I can’t do any wiring but I can put together a WiFi 6E network for the servers only, That means buying 4...

Definitely go with K3s instead of K8s if you want to go the Kubernetes route. K8s is a massive pain in the ass to setup. Unless you want to learn about it for work I would avoid it for homelab usage.

I currently run Docker Swarm nodes on top of LXCs in Proxmox. Pretty happy with the setup except that I can’t get IPv6 to work in Docker overlay networks and the overlay network performance leaves things to be desired.

I previously used Rancher to run Kubernetes but I didn’t like the complexity it adds for pretty much no benefit. I’m currently looking into switching to K3s to finally get my IPv6 stack working. I’m so used to docker-compose files that it’s hard to get used to the way Kubernetes does things though.

AMD’s ROCm stack is fully open source (except GPU firmware blobs). Not as good as Nvidia yet but decent.

Mesa also has its own OpenCL stack but I didn’t try it yet.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

It does not.

ROCm runs directly through the open source amdgpu kernel module, I use it every week.

I use an 6900 XT and run llama.cpp and ComfyUI inside of Docker containers. I don’t think the RX590 is officially supported by ROCm, there’s an environment variable you can set to enable support for unsupported GPUs but I’m not sure how well it works.

AMD provides the handy rocm/dev-ubuntu-22.04:5.7-complete image which is absolutely massive in size but comes with everything needed to run ROCm without dependency hell on the host. I just build a llama.cpp and ComfyUI container on top of that and run it.

I did the same thing for Panasonic ACs if anybody wants to get rid of the cloud: github.com/DomiStyle/esphome-panasonic-ac

It’s what was done for Panasonic ACs: espthings.io/…/esphome-panasonic-climate-interfac…

I’m sure somebody will take a really close look at Haier ACs now.

I’m curious if cars would be bricked if they couldn’t call home, or if you could selectively allow certain messages through.

I can’t speak for every car but at least Teslas do not mind being offline. You cannot control which messages they send because they connect via a VPN to the mothership. So it’s an all or nothing kinda deal.

You can also pretty easily remove the SIM card on older models with just a few screws. Newer ones use eSIMs, never looked into how to get rid of that one but I assume it is more complicated.

Your comment makes me wonder if one could get around AT by installing faraday cages around where the chips are.

The antennas are usually external, mounted somewhere else in the car and can be unplugged. Never checked if it can still get a signal without the antenna though.

edit: Also, the PCB itself is mounted inside a faraday cage because the entire thing sits inside of RF shielding.

Self-hosted or personal email solutions?

I have a unique name, think John Doe, and I’m hoping to create a unique and “professional” looking email account like johndoe@gmail.com or john@doe.com. Since my name is common, all reasonable permutations are taken. I was considering purchasing a domain with something unique, then making personal family email accounts for...

Do you have more details on your setup?

I currently selfhost mailcow on a small VPS but I would like to move the receiving part to my homelab and only use a small VPS or service like SES for sending.

I really like Elisa.

I mostly use it to listen to music that’s not in my Jellyfin library yet but it does that beautifully.

Like how do you replace

Most of the time there is no 1:1 replacement, it all depends on which features you use from these apps. Some suggestions:

AMD Software

CoreCtrl can do most of the important stuff from the AMD software like GPU overclocking, custom fan curves and per-game profiles.

Logitech Ghub

Piper has a lot of support for different mice and keyboards, maybe yours are supported there?

Realtek audio

I’m not sure what Realtek audio does nowadays, which features do you need?

Video recording

OBS is available and does pretty much does the same stuff as on Windows. If you need to capture gameplay you will have to install obs-vkcapture which is the Vulkan/OpenGL replacement for DirectX capturing included on the Windows version of OBS.

Audio settings

Which settings do you require? What do you mean with “Audio quality”?

Unfortunately most Pipewire/Wireplumber settings are hidden behind config files and I’m not aware of any applications to manage them. The KDE audio settings are quite decent but limited in scope. However, most of the Pipewire settings have a sensible default and probably shouldn’t be changed unless you’re doing audio production.

qpwgraph is quite powerful when you need to connect multiple devices together or have virtual audio devices.

Which distro do you use? I don’t really have much sound issues here and I have a pretty exotic setup.

I mostly used AMD Software for instant replay, I miss this loads. Tried replay-sorcery like 3 times, failed all 3 times. I gained more knowledge since, fixed discord’s screenshare, so I might give it another shot, but I also heard that you can get instant replay with OBS somehow.

Yes, I use OBS for that. The feature is called “Replay Buffer” and I have it running with no issues with hardware encoding. I would recommend you use the OBS flatpak, depending on your distro you might also want to use Steam in a Flatpak to make things easier.

I’d like some alternative to fancontrol, I know I could set fanspeed in the bios, idk why I don’t. But I had a nice lil software that managed fans, now I don’t.

I’m not aware of a software that controls all fans but I didn’t really look since I just let them do what they want. CoreCtrl can do the GPU fan but I also leave that alone.

Piper also doesn’t support my mouse. It does however support the one I just switched from a month ago…

You might have some luck requesting support for your mouse/keyboard on their git page, maybe support can be added.

Idk what Realtek does, but I never had any sound related problems on windows. AKA it just worked, I’d like it back pls.

What does not work?

I’d still like to fix the bandwidth (I read somewhere that it’s limited by default)

There’s no bandwidth limit on Pipewire that I’m aware of. The default sampling rate is 48000 if you mean that but it’s a sensible default and you probably don’t want to change it.

and mess around with EQs, my lead is AutoEq.

AutoEq sounds good. EasyEffects definitely can do your EQ and much much more.

there is just so little support, paired with such a steep learning curve.

The learning curve can be steep but don’t be afraid to ask, there’s a lot of helpful people on here. Also most Github/Gitlab projects might look intimidating but they also gladly offer support for applications there.

PDF viewers

Okular is included with KDE and is pretty competent.

Like grep’s powerful, how does regex work, links?, everything in /etc, bash script. hopefully I can get these answered in 2024.

Those are not strictly needed in order to “use” Linux but if you want to learn about them you there’s a lot of resources for them out there. ChatGPT is also pretty useful in helping with bash scripts/commands since they’re sometimes hard to read.

Can’t say I ever had that problem, sorry. My Logitech PRO X scrolls normally over wireless and wired.

HDR support is the feature I’m mostly looking forward to.

when IPv6 gets mainstream adoption

At the current speed that would approximately be in 2087.

Or maybe a server OS with desktop features stapled on the front?

That is a very accurate description of Linux considering even X11 and Wayland are display servers. Pipewire and Pulseaudio are also servers.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

My comment was mostly meant as a joke. I’m aware most of them use their networking capabilities for IPC and being able to use them remotely is just a cool feature resulting from that (except X11).

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Which OS do you use? On Android/LineageOS you can disable all alerts. Not sure if you can mute them, I never got one.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Interesting, now I do wonder what those sliders do. Can’t test them unfortunately.

domi,
@domi@lemmy.secnd.me avatar

Well, that sure is annoying. It seems you really need to be rooted to disable them: xdaforums.com/…/root-mod-how-to-disable-president…
