filister,

Plex is a prime example how corporate shenanigans can ruin an otherwise great piece of software.

filister,

When companies build shitty software for which they charge arms and legs extra and are pissed that someone found their way around it

I broke nextcloud and i cant fix it

I managed to install and set up nextcloud snap on my ubuntu server a couple months ago. I haven’t used it since and now I tried to log in to it but I forgot the username and password. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the snap to reset the data but i couldn’t access the web page. I couldn’t find anything online. Any...

filister, (edited )

Did you try

<span style="color:#323232;">sudo snap remove --purge nextcloud
</span>

This will remove the data directory of Nextcloud. Alternatively you can check where snapd is creating this directory and remove it manually.

If you also have entered your email in Nextcloud you can try to reset your password over the mail. docs.nextcloud.com/…/reset_admin_password.html#:~….

filister,

How is the situation with ROCm using consumer GPUs for AI/DL and pytorch? Is it usable or should I stick to NVIDIA? I am planning to buy a GPU in the next 2-3 months and so far I am thinking of getting either 7900XTX or the 4070 Ti Super, and wait to see how the reviews and the AMD pricing will progress.

filister, (edited )

Anything that is still broken or works better on CUDA? It is really hard to get the whole picture on how things are on ROCm as the majority of people are not using it and in the past I did some tests and it wasn’t working well.

filister,

I would say Nix but I presume you are a beginner so perhaps stick with Pop OS, Mint or Ubuntu.

filister,

It is beginner friendly, that was my point. At the end of the day it is Linux and you can do everything you can do on a normal Linux too.

Initial steps with OPNSense

I am going to build a router with OPNSense (in Proxmox, on an HP thin client). I am stuck with setting up the networking (I have the Inel 4-port card). I don’t really know how to get started. Right now my device has one LAN cable going into it, and my consumer router is doing everything. I can set up a bridge for the other...

filister,

You need to have a dedicated WAN interface, where you connect your WAN cable. The rest of the ports must be put into bridge mode.

You need to create VLANs, one for the WAN, then your home network, eventually your IoT network, guest network, etc. and expose those VLANs to the respective bridge ports.

You would also need an AP that supports VLANs, so anything that runs OpenWRT or other supported device. The routing would be done on the OPNSense’s side.

On the Proxmox you need to expose the network ports to the VM running OPNSense.

But there are more steps involved and if someone can share a step-by-step guide explaining the whole process would be better.

Looking for Notes App for Android &amp; Linux

I am trying to slowly de-Google-ify myself by moving to open source apps, I wanna ditch google notes and evernote. I tried obsidian, standard notes, and joplin, I liked using obsidian on PC and standard notes looks nice on android but obsidian you need to pay to have sync and standard notes doesn’t do markdown unless you pay...

filister, (edited )

You can check Obsidian with Syncthing or Anytype.

I think Anytype would or did already release their source code, while obsidian isn’t open source but it creates Markdown files which is very nice.

filister,

Thanks for sharing it, really helpful post

filister,

All the people predicting doom and gloom for open source, but the reality is that without open source we wouldn’t be in the position where we currently are in terms of technology.

To be honest, I also think the patent system should be revamped as it is extremely flawed at the moment and prone to abuse by patent trolls, and it is stifling innovation.

filister,

Can we move this to some community wiki? I think a lot of people can benefit from it and we can expand it with our own recommendations. Something like awesome-cli

filister,

Hetzner is perhaps the cheapest option.

Me vs my ISP

So I was looking into getting port forwarding set up and I realized just how closed-off the internet has gotten since the early days. It’s concerning. It used to be you would buy your own router and connect it to the internet, and that router would control port-forwarding and what-have-you....

filister, (edited )

There are plenty of solutions out there like Tailscale, Cloudflared tunnel, Nebula, ZeroTier, etc. Yes, ISPs still prefer IPv4 and impose CGNAT, but it is mostly because IPv6 isn’t as ubiquitous as IPv4 and the world long went out of public IPv4 addresses.

Plus where I live I can do with my IPv6 whatever I please.

filister,

Just use awk and when needed ask ChatGPT for the syntax of the command

NixOS beginner resources

Heya, been hearing about NixOS for a long time now, mostly from the peeps over at the Linux Unplugged podcast. So was thinking about jumping onto the nix-train, however it seems like it has a learning curve. Does anyone have any good learning resources, blog-posts, guides, whatever beans that you used to get started with NixOS?...

filister,

This is also a pretty good one: nixos-and-flakes.thiscute.world just ignore the domain name, the guy is explaining stuff very well.

filister,

Noob here, but can someone explain to me what’s the advantage of DirectX vs Vulkan, apart from being around for longer? And why do more developers embrace Vulkan for better portability?

filister,

Does this make it harder to implement?

filister,

I second that, install cockpit if you don’t want to bother with the CLI and run a couple of VMs. You can even start 3 VMs and install Kubernetes on them and play with it.

filister,

For the office suite you can try Libre Office, in my opinion it works pretty well nowadays and if it doesn’t you can use Office365.

filister,

93 comments after a post like this, are you guys nuts?

I feel like the Steam Deck is the best proof of Gabe Newell's quote that "piracy is a service issue."

They could have easily crammed the Steam Deck full of stuff to make it hard to use for piracy - locking down everything, making it usable only to play games you legitimately own, force you to go through who knows what hoops in order to play games on it. That’s what Nintendo or Apple or most other companies do....

filister,

At the end it’s all about convenience and how much you need to tinker with something, because your free time also matters and if the effort to pirate something is higher than the price of that something then you are more likely to choose convenience. Same with Netflix.

filister,

There are more ways to help Open Source and sometimes opening well documented bug tickets with information on how the devs can replicate a problem or by improving the publicly facing documentation or opening a PR request is as valuable or even more valuable to the project as money donations.

My point is even if you guys can’t have the financial means to donate, you can still help by spending some of your free time to help an open source project and that would be equally valuable!

How to check a direct downloaded mkv file

Decided to dip my toes in so I followed the guide to a website where I can download some content via google drive. Like an idiot, I didn’t research the risks of direct downloads before and so I’m now a bit paranoid. I understand the chances are low and my media player needs to be exploited but is there a way to be certain? A...

filister,

Run a live Linux from an USB, and try to play the videos from there. If some files don’t open, I would be a bit worried that they might contain a virus. You can also try to retranscode them with ffmpeg, not sure how this will work with infected files though, but maybe worth researching.

Hollywood to UK Govt: Investigating Pirates "Increasingly Difficult" * TorrentFreak (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Summary: A recent UK government inquiry into the challenges faced by the film and high-end television industry has recently received submissions from major Hollywood studios advocating for KYC (know your customer) rules for hosting providers, similar to banking regulations to identify money laundering. If adopted, this would...

filister,

What about the security complications if the pirated game has some malware inside or a virus or requires the use of a keygen which is infected?
