foggy,

Tom Scott is a beacon of YouTube quality.

He never had a phase where all of his videos were 10:00 for the algorithm, he never jumps on topical shit for clicks, he just talks about genuinely interesting shit, and has gotten to do so on a higher and higher budget.

He has diversified, and has other channels that interface with other YouTubers in gameshow and stuff. But it’s all still legit content.

Example 1

Example 2

Example 3

And a deep cut from 9 years ago. Same kind of content. Slightly lower quality but… Guys been doing this kind of “hey I think this is neat let me tell you about it” for a decade, without becoming a dingbat.

You get the idea.

foggy,

Tell you to leave? Not if there’s a pharmacy inside! Non members are allowed to use their pharmacy and their food court.

I believe the pharmacy one is by law, too.

foggy,

I’m 35 and remember all those things too, but I was never under the impression I was gen x.

I’d say: if you remember the fall of the Berlin wall, you aren’t a millennial, no matter what they say. If you don’t remember 9/11, you’re gen Z.

What is good to eat when you have no appetite?

I am super sick right now and haven’t eaten much in a few days. It’s getting to the point where I am gonna need to force myself to eat something to keep my strength up but everything just sounds terrible to me right now. I have been subsisting mostly on small glasses of milk and the occasional packet of instant oatmeal....

foggy,

I find greasy umami stuff in small quantities gets me from “hunger nausea” to “hunger”

E.g buttered toast.

foggy,

'08 Subaru outback. Mostly because I went in a cross country road trip in it, and put money into the audio system.

how similar are other North American countries to USA??

I mean the other 2 countries, Canada and Mexico, how similar are both of them to United States?? Both countries have a similar economy and democracy etc, and I think those two countries share things like supermarkets, stores, etc. I suppose the cultural differences are not a lot, that is very nice.

foggy, (edited )

No I mean people in Vancouver and people in Nova Scotia are more culturally distinct than Nova Scotians and folks from Maine.

Same applies to Mexicali and Calexico. Very similar. But Mexicali isn’t a whole lot like Savanah Georgia.

Space separates culture more effectively than invisible lines.

foggy,

The countries are all huge. They are more alike one another at their borders than they are similar to themselves throughout.

foggy,

Since you know the person on the phone is doing work study, you tell them that you won’t donate a dollar until your salary clears their tuition costs.

They stopped calling me!

foggy,

Literally as I read the title “if Chicago tornado warning sirens ain’t the top post…”

foggy,

It is so close to accurate to say “they accept you at your worst,” but we all know the toxic “if you can’t accept me at my worst…” Kinda people.

Id say it’s more like

  1. History of self advocacy and/or intolerance for their own mistreatment
  2. They accept or at least make an effort to understand you when you’re at your low points.

These two together kind of ensure no issues fester or arise in a manner such that they’re not dealt with.

What hobbies help you minimize or avoid navigating commercialism?

By commercialism, I’m aiming at a mix of spending a lot and sifting through bloated business models (e.g. this or that accessory/equipment, microtransactions, etc.). Feel like many can relate to this sort of commercial fatigue, and yet it creeps even into hobbies where one tries to unwind....

foggy,

Yeah but some sports, the costs are pretty unavoidable. Like skiing, snowboarding, golfing, etc.

Hiking.

You can do it on trail mix and tap water. All you really need is a good pair of shoes.

foggy,

My gf feeds her cats leafy greens whenever they go after her plants.

It’s not a perfect solution but it works-ish

foggy,

Can here to post this.

10 years old and still a gem of cultural truth.

Literally showed my gf part 1 last night.

foggy,

Well yeah.

Jesse Pinkman’s life was only spared on Walter’s word, yo.

foggy,

Be sure to give them the credit that they deserve.

Because vinyl sucks!!

On a more on topic note: Lemmy is small. We dont have the population to warrant that specific of a community, yet. I’d recommend starting by joining a community about vinyl, making posts about vinyl care, and seeing how they do. When you’re taking up a significant percentage of a larger parent topics feed, I’d say it’s time to splinter off

I’d just add that we run the risk of being extremely unappealing if we have too many communities with near 0 activity. We’re better served at the beginning having fewer, more general communities, to attract critical masses

foggy,

Haha, I think Benn Jordan even says somewhere in the video that this is the only valid stance on buying vinyl. 😁

foggy,

…how do you know it was taken by your grandpa?

foggy,

Having chat gpt write it for you?

Taps head head meme

foggy,

Lmao

In the article there’s a header that reads “A Strong Bong”

99% sure it’s supposed to say “A Strong Bond”

foggy,

My first job, I worked at a big box retail store. The guys that worked there forever and full time were still on 100% commission. Us kids/part timers made like $8/hr and also meager amounts of commission that would total anywhere between $2/hr and $12/hr during the holidays and stuff. This was back in like the mid 2000s, so it paid very well for a no-skills job! These stores phased commission out shortly after my time.

When it was slow, and Id go on break, the old guys would usually tell me to just come back to close up and punch out. I was like 17, so giving up $2/hr was not a big deal, I had like no expenses in my life but gas. Old guys made a little more on the slow days. I walked around a mall.

It was great.
