But back to your first claim: “gotta enforce speed limits:” No, we do not. Speeding is a symptom of a street that was designed wrong to begin with. The correct solution is to fix the design, not install a speed camera as some sort of big brother band-aid.

Edit: why do y’all apparently hate the idea of improving street design? As a former traffic engineer, I’m telling you that that’s the only way to truly fix the problem of speeding. I don’t get why that’s controversial.

Where can a Boomer catch up on current computer/software technology?

I have an eight-year-old laptop that needs replacing and I’m paralyzed. What are the most reliable ones now? Do I need a desktop for CAD? Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?) Browsers ditto? Where do I find answers that aren’t just product marketing?

Do I need a desktop for CAD?

Probably not, unless your models are really complicated or you do heavy duty finite-element analysis or something and thus need a high-end GPU. (If that were you, you’d know it and wouldn’t have needed to ask.)

Pros and cons of operating systems (and where do I find them?)

Linux is the best, but if your use-case is CAD you’re likely stuck on Windows because Autodesk etc. are run by assholes (in other words, because most CAD software only runs in Windows).

Browsers ditto?

Firefox, because it’s the only reasonably-mainstream browser that doesn’t use the same rendering engine as Chrome. You shouldn’t use any Chromium-based browser because allowing Google to have hegemony over web standards is bad for the Internet and society as a whole.

Different countries regulate the radio spectrum differently, so transmitting on a certain frequency might be legal in country A but illegal in country B. They don’t bother making different radios for different countries, though; instead, they just build hardware capable of transmitting on all the frequencies and then restrict what it can do via the firmware. The argument goes, if they allow device owners to modify the firmware, then they might modify the radio to transmit illegally. Never mind that there are myriad other ways an attacker could do that, that are almost as cheap and easy…

That’s why you should’ve just handled arbitrary rotations instead of inventing a finite predefined set of orientation “modes” in the first place.

Things get a lot easier in the long run if you aggressively look for commonalities and genericize the code that handles them instead of writing bunches of one-off special cases.

Note how the kei truck is still taking up a parking space, and that the “need” to provide such spaces makes the entire street wider than it otherwise could be.

I say that not to excuse the “full size” monstrosity in any way whatsoever, but to remind us all that this is “fuck cars,” not just “fuck big trucks.” ALL cars ruin cities, not only the big ones!

If I understand correctly, the old streetcar companies weren’t “privatized” (i.e. government-owned assets that were sold off); they were for-profit companies to begin with.

Aside from that quibble, it was true, but then the “willfully left to rot” part kicked in and those transit subsidiaries went bankrupt and ceased to exist. Any rail transit that exists today is either a system that got saved from GM’s plot by being bought by the government (e.g. New York’s subway system), or a government-run system founded more recently (e.g. Washington DC’s subway system).

Linux broke compatibility with 386 back in 2012. The kernel maintainers also began considering dropping compatibility with 486 late last year, but as far as I can tell they haven’t actually gone through with it yet (apparently it’s likely to be coming in 6.2).

So, strictly speaking: yes, almost any computer that was ever capable of running Linux should still be capable of running the newest kernel version, with the sole exception of 386s.

Whether it can actually do anything useful beyond getting to a command prompt on a serial terminal is another issue entirely.

No. My comment was carefully worded: if it could ever run Linux, then it still can (unless it’s a 386). Mainline Linux has always required an MMU, so 8086 and 286 were never capable of running it to begin with! 🤓

This type of sexism is doubly stupid. At least in my experience, women in male-dominated fields tend to be exceptionally good at what they do because the ones that aren't passionate about the work don't find it to be worth staying because of the sexism. If I were going to be biased, I'd be biased in favor of having a woman work on my car!
