hydrospanner, to lemmyshitpost in The only thing keeping us Millennials going at this point

Everyone over the age of 20 thinks they’re old now.

Everyone older than them responds with some variation of, “Just you wait!”

Always been this way.

hydrospanner, to upliftingnews in Denver experimented with giving people $1,000 a month. It reduced homelessness and increased full-time employment, a study found.

Also 17 year old kids, the vast majority of which have never taken on significant debt and have no frame of reference for the scale of obligation they’re taking on.

It blows my mind that we look at an 17 year old and, as a government, we say, “Alcohol? Too young and immature. Handguns? Too young and immature. Tobacco products? Too young and immature. Voting? Too young and immature. Enlisting in the military or want to take on 5 or 6 figures of debt that will drive your major life decisions for the next few decades? Sign here.”

“Have you tried eating less than a metric fuckton of junk at every meal, ya goddamn ham planet?!”

That’ll work.

Well if it didn’t meet your expectations, don’t keep it so high for these movies.

I’ve been seeing this sentiment a lot and it’s such a shitty take.

Basically you’re saying, “If a movie isn’t liked, it’s the fault of the viewer.” since the only option it leaves is, “Continue lowering your expectations until you’re happy with whatever you end up getting.”

Lately with my workplace it’s been:

Deliverables Team: “Well here’s the deadline we set, so regardless of whatever happens, you need to have all of your work submitted by then.”

Design Team: “Yeah, we’ll get you our markups, but all in big clumps of work, most of it just says before the deadline, but a lot of it we aren’t even going to try to get to you until after that deadline.”

Me: “Okay well then you two need to discuss that because those two timelines are obviously incompatible.”

Them: “Yeah, no. We’re not going to work that out.”

Deadline arrives…

Deliverables Team: “OMG! Why isn’t this done?!”

Me: “Because I don’t even have the design yet!”

Deliverables: “OMG you’re going to make us miss the deadline! Why didn’t you say anything before?!”

Me: First off, this is just a random internal deadline you set. There’s zero real effect of not meeting it. Second, it’s not me making us miss it; I can’t model and draw what I haven’t received the design for. Third, I did say something before, several times in fact."

Deliverables: “Well you need to talk to your design team and make them hurry.”

Me: I can’t and won’t attempt to do that. But I’ll let them know you’re wound up over it.

Lets design team know that deliverables is bent out of shape over missing their made up deadline.

Half of Design Team: Yeah lol they’ll get over it, and if they don’t, they’re only freaking out on you, so we don’t care.

Other Half of Design Team: OMG you missed the deadline?! How could you?!

Me: Well it’s because you guys haven’t gotten me any designs yet.

Design Team: Yeah we’re still working on it and we don’t have a timeline on when we are going to get it to you…but when will you have it done?

Pull the stick back, houses get smaller.

Push the stick forward, houses get bigger.

Unfortunately, the community here is worse too.

So there’s two big immediate strikes against moving from Reddit to Lemmy: your favorite niche subs aren’t here and the community is, somehow, worse.

For many people that’s enough. For most of the rest, it only takes one or two other negatives to convince them that this isn’t a reddit replacement.

Implying they’d give a damn anyway.

hydrospanner, to memes in Were this the ‘good ole times’ they always talk about?

When they took down Constantinople with a DDOS.

Yeah I’ve been to a restaurant (a few weeks ago) where the bill included a line item that said something like “18% hospitality fee - to ensure our workers are fairly compensated, this is not a tip”

Like WTF.

If it was disclosed anywhere on the menu, I didn’t see it.

hydrospanner, to starwarsmemes in I guess they don't have moisturizers on a moisture farm.

I mean…none of what you said is incorrect, but none of it precludes the premise either.

On Earth here in 2023 we have cars and trucks, yet many people in developing countries still walk or ride animals to get where they need to go.

E-waste is a major issue and smartphones are ubiquitous, yet there are still areas even in the US that have limited or no Internet access, and in developing countries, access to even fresh water, let alone electricity and Internet, can be hard to come by.

We are capable of amazing medical feats like gene therapy and advanced prosthetics, yet millions lack access to basic care, and millions more die from preventable disease every year.

So maybe in Star Wars it’s less an issue of “they have bad skin because there’s nothing that can be done about it” and more, “They’re poor people struggling to get by in an unforgiving, backwater location, so that type of care is inaccessible, prohibitively expensive, or seen as a non-essential luxury.”

A 17 year old kid is forced into taking on debt to attend college with, at the time they agree to it, no way of paying it off. It’s a gamble any which way you slice it. And they have no frame of reference to understand the decision they’re making.

The school isn’t on the hook to ensure they get gainful employment that would pay them enough to manage that debt. The loan servicer isn’t either. Only the kid is going to be held to anything, yet the shitty take is always, “They knew what they were signing up for, so fuck em. I want them to suffer for their bad decision.”

With all sincerity, I hope you encounter misfortune through no fault of your own that ruins your financial security for the next 20 years.

Maybe that’ll teach you a little empathy.

hydrospanner, to lemmyshitpost in Beardy bois

Little Santas, sure.

Mall Santas, based on the smell.

hydrospanner, to memes in These blueberries are getting expensive!

They don’t have to be.

But in a profit driven economy, hobbies are fertile ground to make great margins by creating the illusion of need and effectively price fixing with competitors without actual direct organization.

In so, so many fields, prices are set by no force more real than what the consumer is willing to spend. Not materials, not labor, not logistics…just “it costs this much because that’s what people are willing to pay”.

That’s why it’s worth getting into non competitive hobbies: the difference between expensive gear and basic gear has far less impact on overall enjoyment of the hobby when that difference doesn’t correlate to the difference between having a competitive edge, or not, due to gear. At that point, expensive stuff is a luxury and an option, rather than a prerequisite to be on equal footing.
