I like communities and sublemmies.

Coms/commus sounds forced and unnecessary, doubt it’ll catch on.

As for Lemmies, I think that should be a synonym for instances/servers. So, for example, the biggest Lemmy with the most sublemmies would be lemmy.world.

And of course, the users are lemmings.

Late 80s New York crime rates were pretty brutal. The city and music scene were definitely more vibrant and less sanitized compared with today though, so I feel you

Hot tub and jacuzzi are used interchangeably in the US. Is the one that you posted used for bathing?

The tandem bike makes the whole joke. A normal bike would have been meh, but this is much funnier, because you wonder about the riders and their relation

Isn’t the Atlantic Ocean going to become larger than the Pacific in a relatively short geologic time scale? I ask because this is mander.xyz and I’m lazy, and also because I’m aware of the Mid-Atlantic ridge seafloor spreading and the fact that the Americas used to be attached to Europe and Africa. Meanwhile the Pacific plate is subducting under various continental plates.

Keep bullying the Atlantic and see what happens in 100 million years when it’s bigger than you 🫣

Just to clarify, you want to show your family stuff you’ve written online, without them being able to identify your account?

If I were you, I’d just write new stuff for them.

Yeah I wanted to do an aside about whether Delaware was the correct choice, but I felt it was a bit excessive for a meme community.

I think your picks of Wyoming and Nebraska are evocative of a coastal-centric perspective though. Nebraska is quite large and has Omaha, easily taking it out of the bottom 5. Whereas Wyoming has… a large and beautiful expanse. Despite the lack of population, that sheer amount of terrain provides significant value by itself, but maybe not enough to escape the bottom 5. My personal second choice was Vermont, but I feel like Mississippi is potentially also in the mix.

I want to throw Rhode Island in but I feel like the historical significance has to be respected, despite its miniscule size.

Could also go with North Dakota. Woof.

That’s fair and I considered it, but I feel like that’s almost the most damning aspect of Delaware. The only trivia anyone knows about the state is it’s a tax haven; otherwise it is entirely unremarkable, both in public awareness and in fact.

I do respect those percentages though, that’s totally fucked.

Lol!

Yea Vermont is great, but if had just remained part of upstate New York this whole time, instead of becoming its own state, it seems like it would make very little difference.

True, I can’t disagree with that. It’d at least solve the problem of the legality of recreational cannabis, which is a pretty damn big one, if you ask me.

Speaking of cannabis, I almost didn’t notice before I replied but I just realized you said it “would solve more problems than it fixes”. Sounds like a win-win 😅

America might have 50 states of matter, but it certainly doesn’t have 50 states that matter. Looking at you Delaware.

Can confirm. TIL that ancient Athenians were homophobic about Cretans though 😂. Damn Cretans trying to turn Greece gay.

That’s a very interesting question and I’m not sure of the answer.

Obviously on some level, the cost of the infrastructure scales with the number of people using it. But so does the ability to crowdfund, if there are 100x more instances then theoretically there would be 100x more potential donors to meet the cost.

One clear way to influence the scaling in our favor would be to utilize instances with clear themes and purposes. If everybody on a particular instance is interested in the same content, that reduces the wasted computational resources compared to an instance where all of the users are interested in different topics, and thus subscribed to a much wider variety of communities.

My intuition is that as long as the platform only hosts text and images, the costs should be manageable, especially with inevitable improvements to computational efficiency that are likely to come as Lemmy matures. For instance, I believe there is some kind of patch that reduces storage utilization that should be shipping with the next version (0.19).

Totally agree. I’m just trying to brainstorm possible issues that may crop up in the future. Many times, the solution to a problem simply introduces a different problem.

Although as I’m considering it, the ease of making alts on this platform mitigates any potential issues, because the whole thing can be sidestepped by downvoting with an alt.

Overall, probably couldn’t hurt to bring that functionality to Lemmy and see how it goes.

I am not some teacher grading essays and giving points for good structure.

That’s exactly my point. You are not the ultimate judge of what is good and what is bad. I’m not telling you to upvote things you disagree with, I’m simply telling you to not downvote unless it’s clearly not relevant.

All of your comments on this thread are good comments that I disagree with. Sometimes, disagreement leads to growth.

Yeah, a whole-house fan. You turn it on in the evening and it expels the hot attic air from the top while sucking in the cool fresh air through open windows. It actually works really well and is much more energy efficient than AC. When it gets super hot you still need AC though.

It does have a certain charm. I never really played that much tbh, my favorite part was reading the sagas of fortresses on the forums. Those were always so unpredictable and hilarious.

Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I used to check the front page at least once every day, and occassionally check specific subreddits. Now I don’t look at reddit unless theres some drama, like mods getting purged, then I’d go there and enjoy the drama. Occasionally there will be questions that only reddit has the answer to so I have to reluctantly use it. I...

I agree. I’m not getting nearly as much content over here, but I don’t miss it at all. I didn’t realize how much of my time on reddit was spent “hate-reading”. It has totally transformed the way I use the internet; I almost never commented on reddit.

Lemmy has been an absolute revelation for me. I was so lucky to find it early on and I want to share this experience so others can have the same happiness. Just waiting for the developers to iron things out first before I try to recruit my normie friends 😅
