You Need to Turn on Apple’s New Stolen iPhone Tool (www.wired.com)

Apple today launched a new tool for iPhones to help reduce what a thief with your phone and passcode can access. The feature, called Stolen Device Protection, adds extra layers of protection to your iPhone when someone tries to access or change sensitive settings on your device.

lud,

Odd that biometric authentication is needed when it’s worse from a security standpoint.

But hey, at least everyone supports webp now. (lemmy.world)

Context: Even though Chromium has native support for AVIF, a very nice image format, Microsoft goes out of their way to remove it from Edge, which is a chromium fork. Jpeg XL (JXL) (not to be confused with Jpeg (JPG) or Jpeg 2000 (jpg2k) ) is another nice image format, which, IIRC, is only supported in Firefox.

lud, (edited )

Safari is the only browser that supports Jpeg XL. Firefox does support it if you enable a flag but IIRC from bugzilla their implementation is currently not great.

If a browser feature needs to be enabled with a flag it’s not really supported since an extremely tiny portion of users will be able to use it, and it’s often buggy.

lud,

Apparently they do still sell them or rather a newer revision.

www.harmankardon.com/…/HKSOUNDSTICK4WHTAM.html

While I think the original design is pretty ugly It’s still kinda cool. The fourth revision is just very ugly.

Maybe they look better in person ¯_(ツ)_/¯

lud,

Well letting other people choose for you is not really discovery. When too many people abdicate this responsibility, art becone whatever profitable mush advertisers shovel in our face.

Critics and mainsteam media has existed for as long as media has. They don’t choose for you. They just help judge whenever a movie might be worth watching.

It’s not like I watch a movie just beaucse it’s mainstream. I watch some mainstream movies because they specifically are good.

And isn’t really the most highly rated and well liked movies in existance mainstream by definition?

lud,

What are the odds that OP is emailing from an email that’s not configured correctly? Very low.

lud,

Then how was it the “Redditors” fault?

The majority of Europe uses two types of outlets and plugs. One bigger that’s usually grounded and bulkier and one smaller. The smaller one is always ungrounded and is compatible with either outlet.

The french bulkier outlets are also slightly different that what is common elsewhere. Their ground connection is a prong in the outlet while the rest of Europe has two clip things in the outlets. Most modern plugs accept both outlets though.

Sometimes the smaller outlet isn’t actually smaller..

The bulkier European plugs and outlets are very safe. It’s impossible to short the pins during insertion and they never go out from the outlet without you intending for it to do so.

lud,

Would you really want to live that long?

Let’s say I was 40, no fucking way would I reset and reset and reset.

I assume that you have to reach the same age you first got the pills at. So just 3 resets would be 160 years (+ around 40 more if you stop resetting and die at the average age of death in western countries)

Personally that sounds like torture. Sure groundhog day was fun the first few times but 160 years? No thanks.

lud,

I feel like the blue pill is more likely to save you. Especially in countries with bad healthcare.

lud,

This is probably my favorite tracker track: Strobe(.it)

lud,

Anti-woke is bullshit but anti-anti-woke is also bullshit.

It's funny how google pretends the music on YouTube isn't straight up piracy and everyone just goes along with it

Most people have extremely weird ideas of what’s considered piracy and what isn’t. Downloading a video game rom is piracy, but if you pay money to some Chinese retailer for an SD card containing the roms, that’s somehow not piracy. Exploiting the free trial on a streaming site by using prepaid visa cards is somehow not...

lud,

If I recall correctly, the copyright holders can decide what they want to happen automatically.

The automatic options are something like:

  • Disable all ads.
  • Enable ads (if disabled) and take all (?) money.
  • Mute/remove the infringing content.

They can also do stuff like issue copyright strikes but I believe that those have to be done manually since they can be so destructive to creators.

Tom Scott made a really good video about how copyright works in general and how it works on YouTube, I highly recommend it. youtu.be/1Jwo5qc78QU

lud,

Update: Emails from Tutanota.com no longer go to Spam in Outlook.

lud,

It’s possible that your work has problems with spam and has thus set up their own spam filter and that filter might be more aggressive.

There are also ways to change the spam filtering in m365 mail.

It’s also possible that your work hasn’t setup mail properly and protonmail is the one that rejects the mails. We had an issue at work where OOF auto replies didn’t work to external gmails (and probably others) because Gmail rejected the emails (I had confirmed that Gmail was the one that rejected it via the email traces in exchange). That wasn’t Microsoft’s fault.

I can send stuff to my proton mail without issues from two different Microsoft 365 mails.

One missed email should not be interpreted as malicious intent. It’s also honestly quite likely someone just misspelled or something.

lud,

The European Union is a union and not a country, the EU is pretty irrelevant here since there are lots of Europeans that don’t live in a member country. There are lots of cultural differences and languages.

Of course everyone in Europe is European but generalising Europeans that really doesn’t have that much in common (except living in Europe) is most often pretty stupid. Europe is very diverse in culture, climate, economy, politics, etc.

The factory must grow!

lud,

Packet managers are quicker to use. They also keep everything up to date.

Louis Rossman/FUTO's YouTube app, GrayJay, now supports Sponsorblock... and shames you if you use it

Seriously this was very surprising. I’ve been experimenting with GrayJay since it was announced and I largely think it’s a pretty sweet app. I know there are concerns over how it isn’t “true open source” but it’s a hell of a lot more open than ReVanced. Plus, I like the general design and philosophy of the app....

lud,

In theory the sponsor could demand access to the statistics showing watch time and pay differently because of that.

I doubt it happens though.

YouTube is unbearable without it.

lud,

People in this community can be a bit extreme when it comes to never paying for stuff and the need to justify it.

I also like piracy but the constant justifications attempts are pretty annoying.

lud,

The subs are still free for casual users the ones that need to pay are power users that download through the API.

The API users won’t upload subs or anything, website users are more likely to do that.

I doubt I will switch provider because they seem to be the best by far and I download 1-2 files per movie/series automatically via Bazarr.

If anyone knows any non shit options please tell me.

lud,

I am not familiar with who owns who in the USA. I do know that news wouldn’t get made if no one wanted to pay for it.

lud,

I agree, it’s probably the streaming service I use the most apart from Plex.

How to begin setting up a media center?

I have 16TB NAS dedicated to storing TV shows. It is just a cabinet with ryzen 2600 and no graphics card. I have installed openmediavault in it to access it via smb to other devices. I am an absolute noob in setting up a server. Please tell me how I should go on about turning it into a media consumption machine....

lud,

Hard? I did it really easily a few years ago. The hard part is naming everything correctly, not setting it up.

With Plex it also sets up remote access automatically which I don’t believe Jellyfin does.

lud,

Audiobookbay.nl works pretty well (best public tracker I think) for audiobooks but the absolute best source for audiobooks and ebooks is the private tracker myanonamouse.net

Disney is gouging customers with a near doubling of subscription costs. (sh.itjust.works)

Disney is raking its customers over the coals with a 75% price hike for their annual subscription (originally $80.) People wonder why piracy is on the rise.Multiple commenters are saying I’m off base about the 75% price increase. My payment less than a year ago was $79.99. Here’s the proof.

lud,

Haha, paying for a service isn’t the same as being ripped off.
