the HOA stuff is often driven by people who don’t care if we’re on guard, or actively want us to feel unsafe
… sighs … yea
I think @zens / @bri_seven puts it quite well whenever someone tries to describe aspects of the fediverse as inevitable … they repeatedly say something to the effect that the real danger is the one that tries to convince the victim that the abuser/monster is simply a force of nature that must be accepted.
Just my ranting there … hope your instances go well and the moderation work isn’t too much for you!! And thanks for the response!
I’ve personally been wondering this and wanted to ask you precisely this but didn’t because I figured it’d be rude. I hope it’s going ok!?
But yea, it unfortunately makes sense that the reddit migration would have brought over more “mainstream” rubbish.
This, plus what’s happening over on Threads and the arguments here about the fedipact etc, for me, have seriously raised the prospect that as much of a critique can be leveled at the culture often (and pejoratively) dubbed “HOA” etc, actually being protective of a culture to the point of coming off as “gate keeping” etc has real world value.
I think there’s definitely something healthy behind the idea that depression is actually a fairly natural or reasonable state, however hard and painful it can be. Especially for anyone that wants to be mindful of the danger of psychopaths or sociopaths who are probably the types of people that seem oddly immune or unable to understand or empathise with depression.
Otherwise, I’ll just say that a “second childhood” can be a thing (as far as I can tell), where all of the concerns of middle age fade away and we’re forced to wrestle, naively perhaps, with the sheer reality of existing.
I’m with you, the community management aspects of the UI could do with some love.
My quick thoughts:
Sorting by the columns in the list of communities page
Have the search field not jump to the generic search, but instead apply a filter to the table (which can then also be sorted by the columns)
In the Subscribed communities sidebar, also have a search field that alters the list of communities to only those that match the search
In the same sidebar, allow users to place communities into folders or lists that can be folded or expanded so that users can easily navigate to user defined subsets of their communities. Currently it’s a flat list alphabetically sorted.
Either in the side bar or the communities list page, list the number of posts in that community today. I don’t know how viable this is, but each community’s sidebar shows usage data, including the number of users/day, so something like this must be possible.
Much more ambitiously, and it’s already in the GitHub issues but I’m mentioning it here anyway, 4 above naturally leads to providing a feed for only a selected user defined folder/group/subset of groups, so that they’re not merely for organisational purposes but like multi-reddits a nice way of customising your feed.
Yea … like Star Trek, with warp speed and everything, is basically all limited to our single Galaxy … and that’s not unrealistic given their technology.
Like in that space-faring future, the galaxy is basically the new continent and the inter-galactic divide the new great ocean that no one has ever crossed.
So apparently Peertube works well, in part because the structure of the two platforms map onto each other well. Communities -> Posts -> Comments = Channels -> Videos -> Comments.
I experimented once, and from memory you can definitely subscribe to a peertube channel here. But I don’t know my way around peertube so I don’t know how well it works.
If a situation involves another person having substantial power over the success or failure of that situation, and especially if over your success/failure, don’t get involved until you have an exit plan thought out (incl what conditions will justify executing it) and preferably already have started the exit plan so it’s easier to transition to.
