maxprime,

I wonder if you’ve got the title wrong?

maxprime,

Is there any advantage to having extra ports over a dongle with all of those at once?

maxprime,

Thanks! That’s a very nice story too. I have a baby boy and can’t wait to introduce him to computing.

maxprime,

Yeah I had formatted and partitioned the disk ahead of time. The JPEG was in the root directory IIRC. I warned them to not plug in both hard drives during the install process to be sure not to overwrite the wrong drive. They were labelled physically but were otherwise identical.

Ninth grade is 14/15 year olds.

maxprime,

Thanks!

If I recall correctly I didn’t tell them much about anything. One of them had a nerd dad who set up his daughter with Linux at home but she wasn’t familiar with the install process. I gave them some basic info when I gave them the rules (you have to connect the hard drives and ram) but for the most part everything was new to them.

On the other hand, I also ran a computer club with some other kids (in a younger grade) where we took that pile of broken computers and salvaged working parts. We ended up with 3 or 4 working pcs that we ran Linux mint on. They used the computers for Roblox or something at lunch lol. The computers ended up being a popular attraction at lunch!

maxprime,

Yeah. Wayland works great on my laptop. I can’t even log in on my desktop because it’s Nvidia. As a light Linux user the difference doesn’t really mean much to me aside from the fact it doesn’t work on my desktop.

maxprime,

Can somebody ELI5 what the difference between Linux distros is? I’m ashamed to admit I don’t truly understand, aside from different package managers and DEs but even then there are only a handful of those.

maxprime,

Oh, so if you install software with apt, you might get a different version based on the different maintainer/distribution?

I always figured you’d just get the latest version of the software.

Are there instances of software packages available for one distro but not another?

maxprime,

Yeah but don’t Debian and Ubuntu (for example) use the same package manager?

maxprime,

Tremblay’s gotta get used to people pirating ubi games.

Is it possible to use Google Drive reliably?

I’ve been using Google Drive in Windows for about a decade and have a good workflow. I recently transitioned to Linux but cannot seem to reliably connect my drive to the filesystem. My work provides unlimited Drive space and since it’s for work I have shared directories with coworkers that I need access to every day. Hence,...

maxprime,

Are applications able to write directly to the directory this mounts to? Could Codium add this folder?

maxprime,

Hmm. It’s not working in Manjaro for me. Is it as easy as just opening any other folder? I have Drive added in KDE and can see my files but I cannot add a folder from drive in Codium.

maxprime,

Can you open Drive files in Codium?

maxprime,

I bet you could find what you’re looking for on Old Toons World.

maxprime,

Also: this website shows up in my search results a lot. I know it’s not a Lemmy community, but maybe we should make a spreadsheets community if there isn’t one already!

maxprime,

Yeah, there are plenty of ways of doing that, but I was assuming OP’s sheet had other types of cells and that the A’s and 123s were a minimal working example.

maxprime,

How can you distinguish the the alpha cells from the numeric cells?

If you can fit that distinction in an “if” condition I would start by making an adjacent column along the lines of “if left cell is alpha then left cell else above cell”. Then you’ll have what you need except you’ll have some rows of AA BB etc. You could then either delete those rows (but only after copying and pasting values — not formulas) or better yet make a pivot table.

maxprime,

I wonder if this is anticompetitive or anti-privacy. I doubt that Microsoft is even remotely concerned about the “competition” that tuta poses.

maxprime,

Meh, I pay for Usenet and donate to some of my favourite private trackers. My NAS, network switches, firewall, and drives cost probably more than 10 years of subscriptions to services I would otherwise use. I don’t pirate because I’m cheap, I pirate because I hate DRM.

maxprime,

The prod keys and firmware are just from someone else’s switch.

maxprime,

Haha, that doesn’t sound super effective though.

maxprime,

Not a single friend or family member gives two shits about privacy. When I tell them about what companies know about them and what they do with that information, it’s kind of like a vegan telling a meat eater where their meat comes from. Like “wow that sounds bad but I’m not willing to make any changes”. The only difference is that instead of animals being a product, this time they are the product.
