You can find comments from people where old messages and images start popping back up because of bugs in the app. Snapchat is near the bottom of the barrel when it comes to privacy and security, despite the premise

This is the privacy community, and they were discussing the privacy aspect.

The concern isn’t about getting your chats leaked, there’s no incentive to just give away data that is collected. The concern is usually about a malicious group (company, government, criminals) abusing the data that they can get their hands on.

Wider context matters

Two companies can advertise lockers with the same high quality lock, but one might still be better to use

  • if one company can’t prove they are actually using the high quality lock
  • if one company acts as a middleman, doing the locking/unlocking for you
  • if one company watches everything you do before and after using the locker, allowing them to infer what you are using it for

Even if we specifically talk about security, one is better than the other.

Some people use also Reddit when they don’t have a Lemmy community for a topic. Once a community pops up, this could be how they are reminded of it

Also you CAN get your workplace to shift over to something else.

Not every workplace will change procedures, but some will. Especially if it’s software that handles local data or if there are high costs or privacy risks, they can be convinced.

Well companies continue to get new software and learn new skills. They might not switch as soon as you suggest it, but it could get revisited later on when renewing a contract.

This also depends a lot on the size of the team and the work that’s being done. If required features are missing or there are compatibility issues, then that’s one thing. If people prefer the other product, or enough workers share similar views on the topic, then it’s easier to switch.

Again it doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s worth bringing up. If anything, it shows you’re thinking about how to improve your work and the business (financially, ethically). I’ve seen times when changes were made, and I’ve seen times when it wasn’t.

The support thing is a fair point, where companies would rather outsource risk than self host the thing. In that case it’s a matter of picking the most trustworthy company to outsource to. Best case scenario, the other company is doing things just as well as yours would have with the added benefit that they’re focussed on doing one thing well.

Ownership wasn’t secret then, and it’s not secret now. What happened then was that they bought transit things and shut them down. That COULD happen now too, but it would happen pretty publicly

If signal gets the new username feature, this just might be what i do, so fricking tired of people just blindly giving random apps and websites their contact permissions and they get my contact as well, and there’s nothing i can do about it

Ask Lemmy is a place to ask thought provoking questions. The mods have been lenient with some of the recent posts on the basis that they must provoke thought for some people, but after seeing two posts essentially saying “what do you think of my stick?”, I believe we can raise the bar a bit on what kind of thoughts we want...

Repetitive meme posts can get annoying, and mods should intervene in some cases, but I’d prefer if the rules were more open. It’s hard to determine what is “low effort” and “thought-provoking”, and Lemmy is small so further limiting content isn’t that productive

I think people using this community are looking for something similar to AskReddit, and it’s totally ok if you want to be different from that since the Fediverse allows for more communities to be made.

Personally, (and you don’t need to run the community like this), I’m looking for a community for open-ended and discussion provoking questions, not necessarily thought-provoking questions. The stick one was fun and lead to fun discussion
