OP understands the risks, and theyā€™re asking for tips on how to mitigate them if they have to make an account.

A lot of the comments here either missed or intentionally ignored the post bodyā€¦ Or the downvotes on the comment with a personal account saying how single women can feel safer if they can learn about a new person before meeting them.

People have different circumstances and perspectives :)

My advice for the original post:

  • Joining: You donā€™t have to join everything at once, figure out what you might need. This also depends on where you are because different platforms are popular in different places. LinkedIn is one of the few that are helpful in my area.
    • You can also start with Fediverse platforms if you prefer, but if youā€™re trying to connect with specific people that might not help
    • An alternative getting your name published on articles or blogs to fill up the search results
  • Usage: Do spring cleaning constantly. Itā€™s a big task if you try to clean your feed all at once, and itā€™ll be easier for you to do it from the start. When you donā€™t like something/someone, unfollow or mute. You can do it in a way that the other person wonā€™t know, if thatā€™s important. A lot of the problems of social media can be avoided if you maintain your feed.
  • Iā€™ll add more if I can think of them, good luck!

I think it can help to have some presence, even if it is to control what information comes up when someone looks you up.

You want this instead, you need the @ tag at the end else it wonā€™t work for people in other instances

PhotoRestoration

Which you do like this:

[PhotoRestoration](/c/photorestoration@lemmy.world)

This is the universal link: !photorestoration

but it doesnā€™t work on some clients, so I like to include the above as well

I dropped 95% of my activity on Reddit about when everyone else left earlier this summer.

This is not censorship but itā€™s similar, itā€™s the problems with Redditā€™s automated moderation system. Itā€™s not something unique to Reddit since lots of platforms have this issue, and it is a risk on Lemmy as well if we canā€™t figure out other ways to combat spam effectively once userbase grows

  • On Reddit, our university subā€™s moderation team had nearly all of their accounts banned (including all the alts), because we shared a mod account to do basic mod actions (before Reddit had some of that functionality built-in). The mod account wasnā€™t the reason, but we assume thatā€™s what the automated system used to decide we were all one person. It took a while to resolve, and our initial attempts to point out the issue resulted in automated messages saying we were wrong and that we couldnā€™t appeal anymore. Eventually we posted on mod-support and the only solution was to self-dox our alts to each other in order to get some of them reverted (the ones we didnā€™t feel comfortable sharing we never got back). It was a mess.

I think we also need to consider the flip side of this issue. Yes, some people are banned wrongfully from these platforms. However, sometimes people are banned for sharing content that also isnā€™t welcome here, and over time we WILL get more users like that showing up here because Lemmy will look like the next best thing for them. Iā€™m not sure how that will work out and maybe the Fediverse will let those users find their place away from the rest of us, but itā€™s important to know that not all bans from other platforms are unjustified.

otter,

A lot of the animal ones are pretty good, ex. !animalswithjobs

Thereā€™s also !goodnewseveryone , but thatā€™s similar to upliftingnews

otter,

It also works with opening up the info to anyone, not just you. Thatā€™s one of the key issues, even if a trusted party is accessing the info thereā€™s a chance that a malicious party can get access too. Or the trusted party becomes malicious later (government changes, company changes hands, etc.)

People generally donā€™t want everything in their home live streamed 24/7. If anything it has the potential for abuse, like if someone knows when youā€™ll be out of home for a few hours

otter,

If the app needs a server component, a small subscription is justified. If it doesnā€™t, then a subscription isnā€™t justified.

If the subscription is optional, and it gets more frequent updates & support, that might be ok too as long as you can choose to just keep the product as is (and the product isnā€™t riddled with bugs)

This is great! The length and tone was perfect IMO

Hope you guys do these for a while to come :)

otter,

Closest I got was Florisboard because of the customization options

The main things Iā€™m looking for (in order) are

  • predictions
  • better support for emojis and gifs
  • built in translations

Google Keyboard works really nicely and itā€™s hard to give up on some of that

otter, (edited )

I think intent plays a role here. If the goal is to incite a reaction or to hurt a population by publicly burning something that they care about, itā€™s probably not a great to do

One of those things where you know when you see it, but itā€™s hard to define explicitly.

If anything, it might help as a temporary measure to reduce tensions and inflammatory incidents

otter,

Alternate link for clients that donā€™t support that one:

otter,

What are some good alternatives to each Adobe product?

Someone on here mentioned Affinity for the Photoshop/design world

Nitro & PDFxchange for the PDF side?

otter,

Also you CAN get your workplace to shift over to something else.

Not every workplace will change procedures, but some will. Especially if itā€™s software that handles local data or if there are high costs or privacy risks, they can be convinced.

otter,

Yea Iā€™m pretty sure this is what OP heard about, itā€™s a common tidbit that gets shared

Ownership wasnā€™t secret then, and itā€™s not secret now. What happened then was that they bought transit things and shut them down. That COULD happen now too, but it would happen pretty publicly

They do lobby governments though

otter,

Well, there arenā€™t any working toilets anymore

Maybe this will help with the smell

otter, (edited )

It could help in a lot of other crises too

During a natural disaster, you could jump back and forth carrying aid in, and the wounded people out. In any time sensitive crisis, you could get people out of harms way. This bit is more complicated, but you could potentially help out during floods and fires, depending on how far the ā€˜teleport other stuff with youā€™ extends to.

A reasonable limit might be ā€˜Only what you could physically carry yourselfā€™, in which case youā€™d need to be a lot more strategic. In that case, you could work on personal strength and be a one-human-rescue-team. When there isnā€™t a disaster, you could probably shuttle light weight (but important) stuff for a fee, then use that money to fund your own charity to do good

As for this prompt, you could probably just teleport away when someone might see you, or teleport to spots that people canā€™t see. So you could do most things that invisibility would allow

otter,

Really old posts maybe, but it might help to see which posts you are trying to comment on

Oldest post for me is this one from 5 years ago: lemmy.ca/post/375988

I was able to comment on it just now

How safe are grammar editing tools?

Without naming names, thereā€™s a well advertised grammar editing tool thatā€™s available either as an app download or browser extension. This is something Iā€™d value for a number of reasons (good grammar is important!) but Iā€™m super cautious about anything Iā€™m giving permission to watch what Iā€™m typing....

otter,

This one is recommended by Mozilla

addons.mozilla.org/en-CA/firefox/ā€¦/languagetool/

It DOES still need to send data somewhere to check

Your privacy is important to us: By default, this extension will check your text by sending it to languagetool.org over a securely encrypted connection. No account is needed to use this extension. We donā€™t store your IP address. See languagetool.org/privacy/ for our privacy policy.

I donā€™t want to confirm details I donā€™t know, so someone else should probably explain more on if this is good/bad

You could post it to !medicine, but please tag it as NSFW and keep the discussion focussed on the medical aspect of the procedure (it sounds like that was the intent).

This is a community for medical professionals. Please see the Medical Community Hub for other communities.

Official Lemmy community for /r/Medicine.

Also note that itā€™s only recently become the parallel community for r/Medicine, and there may be people subscribed who arenā€™t medical professionals and may not appreciate it (they may downvote it).

If you do find more medical communities then please share. Iā€™d like to add them to the post on the Medical Community Hub

otter,

Please also consider this community for more content

!homeorganization

otter,

Interesting, could you share more on how that works? Is it a neurological change or more of a physical ā€œcloggingā€

otter, (edited )

We also have !CommunityPromo for this purpose :)

Promote your favourite communities here, or ask about a community you are looking for. This includes groups for Lemmy, Kbin, Telegram, Matrix, Discord, Reddit, etc.

Please share some cool stuff in this thread, but also consider subscribing to the community above for more content like this over time

hereā€™s one that I was going to post over there: !edc

What do you carry on a daily basis?

It has cool wallets, pens, flashlights, gadgets, and anything else people carry with them

otter,

Find new communities when that happens, or bring it up with the admins so those mods are replaced
