Thereā€™s a potential for abuse with paying for donations (not saying it should never be done):

  • risk of unsafe blood supplies if people lie about their health history in order to be able to sell their blood
  • ethical concerns around exploiting financially vulnerable people, and turning a life-saving act into another commercial transaction
    • In areas where those vulnerable people arenā€™t protected by the legal system, thereā€™s also the potential of OTHER people ā€œharvestingā€ and selling the blood

Voluntary and altruistic donations are best, and ideally those values are maintained all the way through the donation process. Hopefully technology continues to improve so that we can support those donations with synthesized alternatives

I believe weā€™ve had some discussion around this in Canada recently, specifically with donations for plasma. Iā€™m not caught up on it to comment further about it

otter,

Iā€™m also not sure if transmitting x-rays would work

Itā€™s not like radar, youā€™d need to also be on the other side to collect the data after it passed through the object

Itā€™s still helpful to talk about whatā€™s going on elsewhere

  • see what we can do better
  • see what good features are worth adopting here
  • Calling out bad actions by other platforms. We donā€™t HAVE to help people that arenā€™t on the Fediverse, but there are a lot of experienced and knowledgeable people on here that can discuss issues and how we can address them
otter,

There are some here, but Iā€™m not familiar with the topic so you should judge them

lemmyverse.net/communities?query=Vinyl

If there isnā€™t one that fits, consider making one or taking over an existing one to change it :)

Chances are that other people are interested too but no one has taken the initiative

otter, (edited )

This is great! The length and tone was perfect IMO

Hope you guys do these for a while to come :)

The core issue here is instances disappearing, and That goes into the discussion of the structure of the fediverse right now vs. the fediverse in the future

A dozen big instances feel better now, and I personally wouldnā€™t make a community on a smaller instance unless I know it is likely to stay up. If it was run by an existing organization for example.

Long term though, I trust existing organizations to set up stable instances that wonā€™t be shut down easily. If a government, school, game company etc. makes an instance itā€™s not likely to go down. Having lots of instances will look more normal then.

Ultimately we donā€™t need to do anything differently, I recommend new people join a big instance and then make a new account once they know what instance they like.

note to everyone: please donā€™t downvote good faith questions

OP asked a pretty reasonable open ended question. There are other people who may be thinking the same, and reading the discussions here might change their minds. Save downvoting for rule breaking / content thatā€™s bad for the community

otter,

Please donā€™t use asklemmy as a support community, it fills it with spam

Try !newtolemmy or !lemmy, or one of the other links in the sidebar

otter,

Iā€™m not your target for the question, since I havenā€™t ever tried Unlimited

Bitwarden is very solid for a password manager, and it works well for my family

You could compare prices between just ProtonMail+Bitwarden (or other manager)+VPN of choice?

otter,

What are some good alternatives to each Adobe product?

Someone on here mentioned Affinity for the Photoshop/design world

Nitro & PDFxchange for the PDF side?

I have a few friends and family on Signal. Pretty much everyone uses other services too (including myself) but Signal is installed on a few

  • I talk to some friends / family on Signal exclusively. They either already cared about it, or theyā€™re close enough that they trust my recommendation / still donā€™t care but want to put in the effort
  • I talk to some friends / family on Signal only when we want to have a more private conversation
  • Some people wonā€™t ever be convinced, I talk to them on other services or in person when privacy is important. I set up boundaries to protect myself, and people usually respect that.

This way I protect myself while respecting other peopleā€™s choices.

For you Iā€™d recommend focussing on the second option. When you need to talk privately, ask the person to install it and give a short explanation for why itā€™s better. If they do, then great itā€™s installed and itā€™ll get used once in a while. Maybe they will see other people and build up the network. If they donā€™t install it, then suggest an alternative like talking in person

otter,

Yep this post is getting a downvote

He wants this message out there, why help

otter,

Yea Iā€™m pretty sure this is what OP heard about, itā€™s a common tidbit that gets shared

Ownership wasnā€™t secret then, and itā€™s not secret now. What happened then was that they bought transit things and shut them down. That COULD happen now too, but it would happen pretty publicly

They do lobby governments though

PSA: There are paid services that use residential/clean (not identified as VPN) IP address VPNs/proxies that allow you to watch Hulu etc in other countries.

Just a heads up since this doesnā€™t seem to be common knowledge. There are a lot of different services. You can search ā€œresidential proxiesā€ or ā€œclean ip address vpnā€ and similar. Not sure if Iā€™m allowed to name the names of services, but the one I use (not affiliated, just been using it for a few months now) has a US...

otter,

Sometimes live content (ex. Sports) or lesser known international content canā€™t be pirated as easily

otter,

Convincing them should be easy enough as long as itā€™s someone trustworthy

The media is going to be degrading every day that itā€™s not digitized

otter,

sorry old Ptolemy

otter,

Great to hear! I had them generated, but I was really happy with how this one came out :)

Iā€™m hoping to eventually have some Lemmy artists swap the banners/icons once thereā€™s a need for it

otter,

This is the first thing that came to mind. I used to get them at the dentist as a kid

www.amazon.ca/ā€¦/B07WHM33X1

Didnā€™t realize how cheap they were, maybe Iā€™ll get moreā€¦

otter,

From when I was asking about it, I think itā€™s only the instance admins that can see the details. It would be nice to have this information clearly outlined somewhere, so people know and arenā€™t surprised.

Maybe a table like

What can each person see

otter,

this

^(example of the types of comments that donā€™t really contribute anything)

otter,

I didnā€™t think to use that, thanks :)

otter,

Thatā€™s what I get for typing instead of copy paste

Iā€™ll try and fix it when Iā€™m on desktop again

otter,

Great to see! Thatā€™s 3 I know of, more creators may be sneaking around

otter,

Yep, fun coincidence I guess šŸ˜„
