Yes I know, a few months ago a post with the exact same title was shared […]

I think reposting after 7+ months is more than ok regardless :)

otter,

Worse than spam, spam at least has a point to it.

Ehh, it’s very clearly labeled for what the purpose is and it’s also easy to block (if someone is using the NEW feed and is affected by the volume of posts).

Some people want the functionality of the bot and a big part of the Fediverse is to bring control of a platform back to the user. Lemmit is providing that functionality the right way

otter,

Have there been many posts in the past month? I only see one 3 weeks ago, not sure if it’s a federation issue

otter,

Another great thing about Lemmy is that people can choose what they want to see instead of a platform deciding for them.

If you don’t like the bots, block them. If someone wants the bots, they can subscribe to the communities.

It’s really only a problem when someone is making too many separate bots that it gets hard to block all of them

otter,

Ohh

I’d probably remove it but it’s pretty borderline

otter,

People have said that the new scaled sort coming with Lemmy v0.19 should help with that

otter,

See the pinned post in !communityPromo for some tips on finding communities. If there isn’t one that fits, this is probably the best instance for you to make that community

Well companies continue to get new software and learn new skills. They might not switch as soon as you suggest it, but it could get revisited later on when renewing a contract.

This also depends a lot on the size of the team and the work that’s being done. If required features are missing or there are compatibility issues, then that’s one thing. If people prefer the other product, or enough workers share similar views on the topic, then it’s easier to switch.

Again it doesn’t happen all the time, but it’s worth bringing up. If anything, it shows you’re thinking about how to improve your work and the business (financially, ethically). I’ve seen times when changes were made, and I’ve seen times when it wasn’t.

The support thing is a fair point, where companies would rather outsource risk than self host the thing. In that case it’s a matter of picking the most trustworthy company to outsource to. Best case scenario, the other company is doing things just as well as yours would have with the added benefit that they’re focussed on doing one thing well.

Anyone else feels like they want to destroy their old sim and never give their contact to anyone ever again?

If signal gets the new username feature, this just might be what i do, so fricking tired of people just blindly giving random apps and websites their contact permissions and they get my contact as well, and there’s nothing i can do about it

otter,

Oh I didn’t realize that was you. Hopefully they knock it off soon 😄

otter,

Historical sounds good too, it might be easier and in better taste too

The example post was from the early days of Reddit

otter,

It doesn’t have to be current news, I was thinking any events might work

I’m also trying to keep this open to see if it affects community growth, open to seeing what people want to do

otter,

This might be fun, but I feel like my recommendations go in circles

It might be a game to just escape the circle

Low effort posts

Ask Lemmy is a place to ask thought provoking questions. The mods have been lenient with some of the recent posts on the basis that they must provoke thought for some people, but after seeing two posts essentially saying “what do you think of my stick?”, I believe we can raise the bar a bit on what kind of thoughts we want...

otter,

I’ve also seen other questions that, while not low effort necessarily, have made me wonder, “Wouldn’t this perhaps be better in a more specific community, or in a different style, like NoStupidQuestions?”

Yea I’ve seen a few of those too. Questions that are too specific to a particular app/program or a specific personal problem. Those don’t really belong here

  • "How do I do X on program Y" (bad) vs. “What’s your favourite program that does Z” (good)

My forearms are is going to be so strong

otter,

Welcome!

We actually spun up a new community for new people, feel free to drop by with any questions or thoughts :)

otter,

I dislike a lot of their decision making, and I avoid Google Chrome because of repeated shenanigans.

I use Google docs, Gmail, google photos, etc. because it just works for me with school and work. I might switch to something for photos, but I don’t hate google. Just wish they’d be better

otter,

A key one is batteries

Dell, and other brands, sometimes have it so the device will reject all third party batteries. It has to be one made by Dell.

Meanwhile they stop selling the battery for older devices, which is usually when you need one of those batteries.

otter,

That’s not what they asked though, they’re already using Firefox and they don’t intend to drop it

otter,

Whoever takes it on should also add in some rules. A number of the posts (while interesting) are not relevant to the community
