pingveno, (edited ) to linux in Which terminal emulator do you use?

Gnome Terminal. I’ve tried out a few others, but at this point I’m kind of partial to just using the default with good integration with the rest of the desktop. Pop, in this case. I’m curious if they’ll adopt something else for the terminal in COSMIC.

Edit: They just recently announced COSMIC Terminal, so that’s a yes. I look forward to trying it out. It’s based on alacritty’s framework.

Okay, I guess I’ll say it. Year of Linux Desktop!

pingveno, to linux in What distros have you tried and thought, "Nope, this one's not for me"?

Gentoo: I hated constantly compiling and configuring. It was incredibly time consuming. If I was compiling for uncommon cases it might make sense, but I am dealing with a pretty standard dev machine.

NixOS: The configuration is kind of a pain and never really got the extra features you get beyond package management working correctly.

pingveno, to linux in Ending support for Windows 10 could send 240 million computers to the landfill. Why not install Linux on them?

This isn’t a new thing. Free Geek has been refurbishing computers and installing Linux on them for over two decades now. It started in 2000 in Portland, Oregon and has since spawned affiliate locations elsewhere, including in Oslo.

It was so frustrating watching some people treat him like he was anything close to a real journalist. He’s just the designated propagandist.

pingveno, to memes in Capitalism really just reinvented sleeping outside SMH

My parents had a bed built for their minivan with ample storage and a thick layer of latex foam. They did some trips around the US using that, though ultimately it turns out they’re just not great sleepers.

pingveno, to memes in You're just a kid, how would you know what you want for the rest of your life?

The divorce rate among millennials is decreasing in the US compared to earlier generations. That said, reducing it to how long people are waiting to marry ignores a lot of other factors. For instance, low income couples are more likely to never marry, their relationships are less stable, and if they do get married they are more likely to get divorced.

At the same time, it picks and chooses its dates. Gold has been volatile, with the price oscillating between $2,100 USD in 1980, $470 USD in 2001, and back up to $2,200 USD in 2011.

I was recently trying to talk a person online out of marrying someone once the two of them are both 18. It’s partly because they’re head-over-heels in love with their partner and partly to move out of the US to Canada to escape their trans hostile state. They are trans and their partner helped them through some rough patches. The couple is only now meeting in person for the first time after three years. It was a little frustrating talking to them because I’m a naturally cautious person. My husband and I took about five years from first date to cohabiting to wedding. They honestly sounded like your stereotypical love sick teenager.

I would agree with the general judgement of this cartoon. There’s going to be some survivor bias for marriages that worked young. I know a woman who married a man who was in his 50’s when she was 18, right out of high school. When he died, she never remarried. But you never hear much about the marriages where an 18-year-old deemed themselves “more mature than those other girls/boys” and it turned into a disaster. They typically don’t last that long and no one wants to talk about them much.

pingveno, to memes in OHHH WAY DOWN SOUTH IN THE LAND OF TRAITORS,

Not just that, but the economic powerhouses are almost exclusively cities run by Democrats. Even deep red states have Democrats as mayors of their big cities. Texas would have a hard time funding a war if they were trying to do it on the backs of porcupines.

pingveno, to announcements in Lemmy Developer AMA and Dev Update, 2024-01-26, 1500 CEDT

If Lemmy does become more of an organization, it would be nice to have a level of public assurance over any control exerted by the organization. A lot of people see that the lead developers of Lemmy are communist and shy away from it based merely on that. I have one of the oldest accounts on Lemmy, I’ve seen plenty of them, and my impression is that they have conducted themselves with only the utmost ethics. However, it can still help newcomers who don’t want to feel like someone might be breathing down their neck.

Now you’re reminding me of my uncle and his multiple hernias. He waited for years to get them taken care of because he didn’t want to have to deal with the recovery time.

pingveno, to linux in Hans Reiser on ReiserFS Deprecation

To me, it sounds like a man who does not understand social interactions trying to emulate how he should act, as he’s been taught in therapy for the past however many years in prison. He will never come off as normal because he is attempting to do something that his brain isn’t capable of. It seems very in line with my impression of his past interactions online.

I am pretty sure keeping pineapple off pizza is basic human decency.
