I’ve tried Jerboa, Liftoff, and Connect. They all seem fine, but Connect is the one I stuck with.

Lemmy instance which has not defederated with any other instance.

Hi everyone. I have found many ghost comments in posts. Like one of the posts has 300+ upvotes and 28 comments but when I opened it, there were no comments. I tried different Lemmy apps and it’s the same in all of them. Which leads me to believe that it has something to do with defederation done by Lemmy.ml. Which instance has...

Make sure you go to Settings and select any languages you want to see as well as Undetermined - I had a similar issue which was fixed by doing this.

If that’s not it, it may be a delay in comments federating if it’s a community you just recently subscribed to, or there could be federation issues. If the post is on an instance that’s defederated with yours, I don’t think it would show up at all, unless the defederation happened after it was made.

You can check who an instance has defederated with by checking the Instances link at the bottom of the mane page (or adding /instances after the URL). There’s also a tool to see what other instances have defederated with a particular one here: defed.xyz

Xenophobia is to racism what homophobia is to ... ?

Is there a word that means “a hatred of gay people”, rather than “a fear of or aversion to gay people”? Surely there are people who simply hate homosexuality without necessarily fearing it, and vice versa. Someone who hates homosexuality should probably be condemned for their unreasonable and hateful prejudices, but...

I’ve seen the word homomisia and the general suffix -misia used to reflect that a lot of “phobias” really mean hatred and not fear.

I thought the second was Buddy Holly by Weezer.

Why do people not understand that you can agree with one thing someone said or did while disagreeing with the majority of what they stand for? (www.youtube.com)

An example is that I generally despise Jordan Peterson and most of what he says, but I often quote one thing that Jordan Peterson said (in the linked video) because I think it’s a good summary of why toxic positivity doesn’t work....

nuance doesn’t exist

I think it’s a little more nuanced than that…

I would probably call it a piece of bread with an egg on it.

What are the best steps to reduce the wealth of billionaires?

There are a myriad of news articles here on Lemmy that display the abhorrent influence billionaires have on our society (especially the US, where I reside). I consistently read comments where the posters appear hopeless and despondent of the situation, while others jokingly refer to the guillotine....

To answer the question in terms of things you personally can do, I think the boring and realistic answer is to research organizations who align with your goals and who you think have effective methods, and get involved with them.

Personally I like represent.us - They’re specific to the US, but their idea is to put anti-corruption laws into place that help remove the influence of money on the government. This would help get laws passed that favor everybody instead of just the rich. Their approach is to begin at the local level and get enough momentum for a national movement to have some power.

Here are a couple of videos they made, first about what the problem is, and second about how they are trying to solve it:

What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?

EDIT: Let’s cool it with the downvotes, dudes. We’re not out to cut funding to your black hole detection chamber or revoke the degrees of chiropractors just because a couple of us don’t believe in it, okay? Chill out, participate with the prompt and continue with having a nice day. I’m sure almost everybody has something...

Not sure why you mentioned chiropractors, I thought this was about scientific things.

No Toes comes in at the most states with 25, including Texas, and the highest population at 139 million. Second is Animal Toes with 11 states and 93 million people, California being a big help there. Florida and New York help get the seven Toes states into 3rd with 75 million, and the last seven Shoes states, with no highly populous states, come in at 27 million.

Not saying this is all that would determine the winner of a war, I just wanted to see what the numbers look like.

For a passing grade - the easy way to calculate it is by calculating the chance of failing and then subtracting it from 1. To fail, you need to get the first two questions wrong (3/4 times 3/4) and then get them both wrong again on the second try (2/3 times 2/3 since you are choosing from the remaining 3 choices for each). So 3/4 x 3/4 x 2/3 x 2/3 = 1/4 or 25%, so you have a 75% chance of passing.

The Texas Superconducting Super Collider under construction, 1990s. (lemmy.world)

Excerpt: The Texas Superconducting Super Collider would have dwarfed CERN’s LHC, according to reports. It was designed as an enormous underground ring complex situated close to Waxahachie and had it been allowed to go forward, would have been considered the most energetic particle accelerator in the world. The project’s...
