wearing underwear complicates defecation

sbv, (edited )

maybe we’ll be renditioned to the same black site

sbv,

AND I WILL FUCKING MEAN IT

sbv,

AND I WILL FUCKING TELL EVERYONE HAPPY KWANZAA, MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS, FELIZ NAVIDAD, HAPPY HANUKKAH, OR WHATEVER FUCKING GREETING I FEEL LIKE USING

sbv,

That’s a serious life skill. Avoiding micromanaging gives you more time, makes the other person feel more empowered, and avoids conflict in your relationship. Props!

sbv,

Because being user-friendly is way, way, way more important than things like privacy, not being bombarded by ads,

People gravitate to the technology that they can use.

I live in a small town. Every business and service has a Facebook group because it’s usable. A couple of stalwarts maintain web pages but they’re full of inaccurate information because they’re too hard to update. The Facebook groups, on the other hand, are constantly up-to-date, and the owners are quick to respond to any comment on them.

That’s before you get to network effects. Everyone in the town uses Facebook. So when kids ask for a messaging or social media account, they ask for a Facebook product so they can talk to their friends and family.

It’s incredibly shitty. Everyone in town would agree with your sentiment, but they bounce off competing products. The effort involved in hosting a service isn’t a higher perceived cost than the ads, privacy invasion, etc.

sbv,

Am computer scientist. How to lab coat?

Does Google still hold contact data after deleting from Google Contacts?

I am in the process of moving out some contacts from Google Contacts, specifically those that I do not have a Gmail address. It's a way for me to give these people a tiny bit more privacy, as I'm doing a cleanup of my contact list. My concern is that Google will still keep their data even after I delete it from my end. Is it so?...

sbv,

We have no visibility into Google’s internal processes. The developers that work on the product would probably know, but the rest of us can only guess.

The Unity Desktop Environment an Underrated Masterpiece (unityd.org)

Why is the unity is underrated when its what i use right now with Ubuntu Unity and its actually really great experience for my 2021 HP Stream 11 Laptop and i hope you all to share your experiences using the unity de in Debain Ubuntu Arch Fedora Gentoo Opensuse Etc thanks for your Amazing community my Wonderful Friends

sbv,

That’s good! It should be usable and intuitive for everybody.

sbv,

Probably? I switched employers and I’m running osx now. I prefer Unity, but osx works too.

What is your unpopular flim opinion

I’ll go first. Mine is that I can’t stand the Deadpool movies. They are self aware and self referential to an obnoxious degree. It’s like being continually reminded that I am in a movie. I swear the success of that movie has directly lead to every blockbuster having to have a joke every 30 seconds

sbv,

Mediocre is too kind. The Mario movie was bad.

I took my kids. They kind of enjoyed it, but forgot about it almost immediately.

sbv,

I was like “this Lemmite gets it,” until I got to the Interstellar part.

But I’m glad we have common ground on the shit show that is Inception. It felt incredibly long. I don’t know if it was because I was bored, or if it’s genuinely six hours long.

sbv,

The box office agrees with you.

sbv,

They’re bad. Every one of them.

sbv,

“conscripted” is an interesting choice of words. Why’d you go with that one?

sbv,

programming. It’s just a really big IDE.

sbv,

Tab Wrangler

sbv,

I use a browser extension that closes the least recently used tab after 15 minutes. It stops closing when it reaches five for the current window.

I don’t think I’m missing anything.

sbv,

I enjoy sh.itjust.works. I’m not convinced the instance makes a big difference, but I feel like this one is fine.
