well then please don’t shoot down the next best alternative. We would love HSR, hell even faster trains through areas like the Midwest, but no one is building them and no one wants to lobby for them. Until then we’re stuck in this car-centric hell, and EVs are the best alternative. (Again, we all know they’re not the best, they’re the best alternative)

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Great, I agree too, but go ahead and start lobbying the US government to build more.

I’m all for your suggestions, but the fact of the matter is we need solutions yesterday and to build what you’re talking about will take 10 years of lobbying alone. California HSR is going to be another 10 years and they’re already building it.

EVs are a stopgap measure, we all know it.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yes, which is why I’m downvoting you.

I’m huge into going green, going mass transit, and everything else, however, most people cannot fit into one worldview, which is why this is more nuanced than your meme suggests.

As an example The Midwest in the states does not have mass transit, so they have to drive. So trains and bikes are out. Hybrid still uses gas, and for the vast majority of them they will be on the freeway, so a hybrid is basically the same as an ICE car anyway, so yeah, I’ll push them into getting EVs if what they’re doing is commuting. However than it gets more nuanced to “is this for roadtrips”, because then maybe hybrid is better.

Which is why again I say it’s a person-to-person basis. For you maybe a hybrid is the only option, but saying EVs are wrong for everyone is a very naive approach.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

and what kind of vehicle you’re replacing. Replacing a small compact ICE with an EV? Probably a longer amount of miles.

Replacing a Ford/GM Mega superduty emotional support truck with an EV? probably much lower.

Satisfactory. I’m well past 1,500 hours.

The factory must grow

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yep, Google decided it was too complicated and removed it all. Dont know how it was too complicated, people just wouldn’t use it if they didn’t know about it. They felt “natural language” would be more useful. Bullshit, I search for “foo and bar” it’ll return me results for foo and ignore the rest

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, here in Iowa the vast, vast majority of corn is known as “cattle corn”, and as described it’s used for cattle (and biodiesel, and pigs). Most farmers only grow sweetcorn “for fun”, as a side thing compared to the huge subsidies for cattle corn.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Temu is just driving the social media impulse “buy buy buy you need it buy it now!!” Culture when in reality their stuff is crap, and even for the cheap prices… You probably weren’t going to buy it anyway. They are really striving in being a shitty company that’s bad for us and the planet.

Good video here that explains more of how they’re just manipulating us to buy more: youtu.be/7hGD5Cz_now

Capitalism in a nutshell. “Yeah it kills the planet and harms others and there may be forced labor involved, but idc, that’s other people’s problems”.

Not guilt tripping btw, just stating facts. I don’t and won’t buy for them.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

TikTok and them just fuel each other to create fake fomo and it’s so crappy. They target kids so hard and take advantage of them wanting to fit in, and get them to just spend money on crap they didn’t need to buy anyway. Not to mention they’ve pushed fashion cycles to be faster to make people think that top they bought 2 months ago is useless and should be thrown out.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yeah, we’re saving up for an EV and I’m hoping that will be our forever car. I have no interest in continuing to use fossil fuels to get around. My area. Also is investing in transit finally so maybe in 10 years we can go down to just being a one car household?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

You’re being downvoted because you’re right. I’ve had people argue that EVs still aren’t a good alternative because they may require a bit more effort every once in a while. Like, charging for 30 minutes at a charger on a long road trip vs just gassing up. Other than that they are pretty much a drop in alternative and people still balk at them.

Then trying to get them to use public transit instead? Doesn’t even matter if it’s more convenient, they’re stuck in their ways and will refuse to change ever.

Get out of your ruts people. Just because “this is the way things are” doesn’t mean it’s the best way. Ffs the amount of midwesterners who come to my city to visit and think we’re being “unsafe” by using the train, just get out of your mindsets.

What's with the corporate obsession with customer feedback?

If you contact the customer support of your utility company, phone carrier, bank, or other service provider you’ll likely be flooded with requests to rate the experience and provide feedback. Likewise, corporate websites and email communications often solicit feedback via embedded buttons or links to online forms....

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yup, they think they’re motivating us but anyone who has worked food service/retail knows that just demoralizes the fuck out of us. It’s rare enough when a customer actually fills out a slightly positive review, they gotta rip apart even the good ones.

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

and corporate knows that’s how people think and still grade their employees on it because “you obviously could have done more”. I had one that was “Well the only perfect person was Jesus so you can’t get a 10/10”. Okay but we’re not grading Jesus here Erma, you’re grading me, and my boss isn’t going to listen to that

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

It’s all that BS corpo jargon. “Give 110%”, “Do better than your best”. Right, but we’re human beings, no one can be perfect all the time. They don’t care, they have you boiled down to a number.

I did retail for 10 years and I’m damn happy to be done with it. Every time I get a survey though I know in my head what corporate is doing to these people, and I try my damnest to let people know how to actually let their voices be heard.

Leave product reviews, reviews on Google, social media, hell talk to the media, those will all reflect the product itself. But those reviews they send you, those are for human beings just trying to scrape by.

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Correct, the situation is much more nuanced than a simple sign could say. Both sides have rights and very wrongs about them. The only thing that should really be on signs should be “both sides should stop the violence and talk it through”, but we all know about how well that would go. Still, star trek taught me that should be the goal.

how to receive alert when comments removed?

Censorship is absolutely rampant on Lemmy. I don’t post particularly controversial stuff, but I am an active commenter and I’ve noticed that mods will just wipe my comments or those of others on a whim. I think this is a huge issue and one of the biggest downsides about switching from reddit. I very rarely had comments...

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

The only thing I can think of is to somehow subscribe to the modlog. That will have the entire thing.

As for moderation, you aren’t dealing with a huge corporation, you’re dealing with individuals who choose to host their own server and have their own ideas for how it should run. If you don’t like it, the true freedom is that you can start your own instance and communities. But you need to put in the work to convince people to switch.

It’s okay, I know his dad and they’re good people.

I was in a national park this past weekend. Beautiful scenery, gorgeous vistas, and the clearest air anyone could ask for.

Until some jerkass decided it was the perfect time to light up on the trail and then flick his cigarette into the woods. During fire season. Fucking asshole.

I’m definitely too old, but as a Millennial I love Gen Z. They got their funny internet things, their doom memes, their music, and I say go for it. They’re picking up and running with the rights for all, they’re more open than we even are, and it’s just awesome to see. People love to make fun of the younger generation but are so quick to forget what we were actually like back then.
