Exactly how I felt there too. Reddit was different. It wasn’t the place where you could come and chat with strangers about things you enjoy, even the most positive subs were littered with spam and comments usually devolved into arguments.

Not saying it didn’t happen here but the vibe is for sure better. Haven’t logged into my reddit account since spez killed Sync.

They say, as I know people in the midwest who commute 1.5 hours each way to the city for their job and then turn around and drive home. I have a friend who lives in a town of no shit, 400 people.

There’s no bus that goes there. It’s 30 miles from the nearest “city” of 15,000, and he works another 20 miles past that.

You can survive without cars

Sure, they’ll just not eat, not work, and not do anything. Dude I’m all for urbanization and adding mass transit, but you’re going to be hard pressed to add rail routes or even bus routes to not just that one town of 400, but all the other thousands of tiny towns. Hell even the town of 15,000 doesn’t have a rail route. Hell even the state capital is missing a rail route. Let alone commuter options.

I’m not saying America is an exception, I’m saying you’re naive for thinking your one opinion will work for everyone, and that the problem is more nuanced then you understand.

That’s why I brought up Cali HSR. It’s been over a decade of planning and building that, and that’s connecting two of the largest cities in the country, and you’re just casually saying “Just build it everywhere”. Like yes we want that too, but the realities of building that would be centuries of work.

Absolutely doesn’t, and we should push them to bring back rail, but that will take a very very long time to build. Even major cities are missing rail links, they would need huge infrastructure to add it there, and then smaller links for the teeny tiny towns. We should do both - invest in good public transit, and also embrace stopgap measures.

We can both say “EVs are the solution for now” and also do things like “No new lanes will be added unless rail is considered first”

That’s unfortunately the truth in most American rural towns. Take my town and their grocery store. My town back in the day apparently had a great town square, vibrant, very walkable. Over the years it’s become more delapidated due to neglect, and businesses don’t want to open there. Our grocery store left the downtown area so they could build a new one on the outskirts of town. People love it, it’s bright, big, huge even, and of course, plenty of parking. So they think it’s an absolute win. Except it’s not. It was the town’s only grocery store and now rather than having a walkable store from all the houses in town, everyone now gets in their car and drives 2 miles out of town, parks in the massive parking lot, and walks inside.

This is how commercial has all happened in small towns. It’s left the downtown which you’re right, would be very walkable, and has moved outside of town. On top of that, it’s extremely anti-pedestrian, so even if there would be a bus added eventually, it would still require walking 1/4 mile from the bus stop across a parking lot just to get to the entrance of one of the stores.

The entire thing is ridiculous, and you’re right for not understanding it. The only way it makes sense is if everyone is brainwashed into thinking that “it’s better that I get to get into my car, drive 2 miles, and pick up my groceries, put them all in my car, drive 2 miles home, then bring them all inside”

I will say EVs do work there, and it’s not because of charging infrastructure, but because everyone forgets that you can charge your car at home. Most residents are single family homes with 2, 3, hell even 4 car garages. Each space could have a charger, and every home could have solar added. Places like grocery stores can add chargers. In that small town we (for some reason) had 6 gas stations for our 15k people. They could be mandated to add some chargers, but even then, if everyone charged at home it’s like leaving your house on a full tank every day. Very few people seem to think that way.

Transit is by far the superior option, but we’re talking decades, centuries to hook up these small towns. In the short term, EVs will lower our dependence on fossil fuels at least.

Agree. I’m several hours in and I’m honestly loving it. Face it gamers, y’all just like to hate things, it’s fun to be in the “in crowd” who knows better than everyone else to not buy something. Misery loves company.

So far I’ve played 4 hours and I just think there’s a hate train on it. I have a 3000 series card and took the recommended steps from paradox and the game plays fine, I’m enjoying it. From what I understand VRAM is the choke point, so if you don’t have a ton then maybe hold off

It is though. You’re comparing apples to oranges - you can’t compare an FPS to a top down strategy. Even Cities 1 never had a great framerate, even 8 years later on modern hardware it still chugs, and it doesn’t have nearly the fidelity that Cities 2 has. The only reason the GPU is the bottleneck is because of the fidelity. If you turn down the graphics settings to Cities 1 level, guess what, the CPU becomes the bottleneck again.

For another example, Age of Empires 4 locks the zoom level because they couldn’t handle showing too much on screen. You just can’t demand the same rates as an FPS. Completely different parameters. You’re expecting an M1 abrams tank to have the agility of a honda accord and the speed of a masarati, when you really needed something something that could seat 20 people.

and the heart of the problem. Gamers have forgotten that games are tradeoffs. Counter Strike has high FPS and the expense is lower detail. Cities opts for higher detail and fidelity over having higher FPS. Of course studios would love to give every game 120FPS at 4K ultra, they didn’t just decide not to do that. Optimization and squeezing a few more frames per second is tedious work. It’s not some switch in the engine they forgot to flip. It requires pouring over millions of lines of code, deciding to create this class instance later, to move this memory allocation to another place, to deciding what to cut out to make it just a smidge faster.

I stand by my other comments. Gamers have become entitled that their systems should run brand new games at perfect ultra settings. That’s not how it ever worked. Brand new systems are out of date the moment you buy it. The only way to guarantee anything to run at perfect ultra for every game is to wait 5 years after it released on hardware that just came out.

I’ve been worried about the same. I’m slowly moving my email and all accounts over my own domain name which for now is forwarded onto the same Gmail. Seems like an extra hop but if they block me then all I have to do is point my email somewhere else

I can’t stand how windows updates are so intrusive. Sometimes I’ll leave my computer on running a task overnight and Windows will just say “Oh fuck you, I restarted halfway through the night, and then your computer sat idle for 3 hours”. And, btw, I have updates “suspended”

I’m like everyone else here, I run Linux for most of my stuff, but Windows is on one last box, and it’s just so aggravating now

Yeah studios hate this because they want to know how invested people are to know if they should continue. However they made the problem themselves by cancelling so many good shows.

Netflix leaked that if something isn’t crazy popular after season 1 it won’t get picked up again, which is asinine because we all know so many shows don’t get their legs until season 2 or 3

NAS build, what's wrong with it?

I want to setup a NAS (mainly for storing games and videos), that I’d also like to use to watch said videos on a WiFi TV and to install games on a separate PC connected via ethernet. Personally, I think maybe just cleanup after 6 months where it’s not deleted, but gets a lock and a notification similar to websites that says something like

Uh no. It matters. If you tell someone you’re going to be somewhere at a specific time, then it is rude to not be there at that time. The only way to make it okay is to call ahead and warn them that you will be late.

Even with a playdate like you said, the other parent may have food ready. They may have declined a different activity so they could meet with you. They may have left early from a different event, or even they were enjoying a TV program but stopped early to go meet with you. All of which if you would have called to say you’ll be late they could have continued. It doesn’t matter that you were meeting at a park, you put their life on hold for it, respect that they did that for you.

You have kids. Learn how to be on time, you’re supposed to be the one who can manage the time for them, not use them as an excuse.

Being a parent is irrelevant. All you have to do is text and say sorry this happened, be proactive not reactive. Something makes you late? Warn people you’ll be late so they can get started without waiting around for you.

We have basically no idea what you’re running or how you’re running it, you saying you’re running docker is like saying “I have a server”. But, to be sure you’re running the latest version just use the tag, the part after the colon. So for lemmy, the most recent stable release is 0.18.5, denoted in your image as dessalines/lemmy:0.18.5
