Yeah, where I used to live up north, even very remote lakes were poisoned with mercury said to be from coal burning in China. People were advised to not eat fish from the lake more than a few times a week or once a week for certain fish. So... tons of people just ignore that or don't even know about it because they either don't really understand or believe it, have poor information sources, enjoy the experience, or it's all they can afford.

What’s hell all about, then? I always understood from Christian theology that it was a place controlled by Satan where Bad People are tortured for an infinite amount of time after death.

I could see what he means, and that happens to me sometimes too. I've thought background noise is all sorts of things. it is very quiet down there (we were I think at least a mile underground, having walked roughly horizontally for 5 hours). It's still to me just a classic amusing 'oh great' thing to tell someone in that situation.

I used to have 20-30 open at a time when I was doing the same things, but I can't imagine building up to hundreds. Maybe I'd leave them open for the next day, but generally I try to stay more organized than that. When you have hundreds of tabs open you can't even see the titles so I find it a lot more difficult to navigate between them.

They sell items in larger quantities, like 24 eggs vs 12, or 3 lbs of cheese vs .5 or 1, or 7 lbs of sour cream vs 1, 2-3 lbs of chips vs 10 ounces (if my goofy American units mean anything to you). They also have good prices on other items like kitchen goods, jewelry, electronics, auto services, alcohol and clothing. One thing that distinguishes them is that their house brand, Kirkland Select, is very good for most items. While they tend to only carry 1-2 brand names for most items, they’re very well chosen in my experience.

Maybe in the Midwest, east coast or northwest US. The south and southwest: some white people there are the most thrilled about death pepper sauce, and I’ve also met Hispanic people from AZ/TX/NM who have no interest in spicy food.

Sometimes, sure. But with ~15 years on reddit I have run into some power-tripping mods before... /r/portland, for example - I mainly agree with their politics but when I didn't they'd delete all of my posts and then shadowban me. Not allowed to disagree.

This is because their execs are overpaid idiots who are on this list of people who should just stay home.

Coming from the US, I had no idea until I became friends with an Australian, but some people in AU and the UK really hate people with red hair and call them 'gingers'. I suppose it's some anti-Irish thing.

There are distinct genetic lineages that can reliably tell roughly what region someone's ancestors were from.

It can be light hearted, or not. As you note some people do take it a bit seriously. The wiki article addressing the history and present nature of anti-ginger discrimination has some interesting examples.

It’s one of those things they’re choosing to ignore since it’s impossible to defend. Better for them, in their minds, to just ignore it and discuss something else, like how when a major story breaks that’s bad for republicans, Fox will be discussing some irrelevant nonsense like Hunter Biden all night.

Sure, of course I acknowledge it exists. I understand why, i guess. I was forced to move around a lot as a kid, first from school to school and then from state to state, which probably gives me a different perspective. I just also resent it from things like, I drove 5 minutes across the bridge to Wisconsin to eat mexican food at this crappy bar, then guys in the parking lot acted like they wanted to kill me for not having a Wisconsin license plate, as they muttered something about football.

I like the places I have lived, but I don’t feel like where I happened to be born is a personal achievement for myself. The rivalry between states and regions in the US is basically like nationalism. It’s not a good influence and it doesn’t come from a position of emotional maturity.

The “drag queens are pedophiles” and “trans people are groomers” is one of the most tucked up and evil things they’ve come up with, which is a high bar.
