One of the biggest ratios I’ve seen on this platform lmao, the people here love their Linux

Highlight of my life was shortly after I broke my arm, someone saw me struggling with one of these one-handed and opened it for me like the damn lockpicking lawyer. I’ve considered taking my sling with me shopping ever since, in case I need another good Samaritan to open one of these godforsaken bags again

I can see it. It’s hard to tell whether they’re excessively frayed or fur-lined, which would be weird for short shorts

Making a 20 minute advertisement rife with misinformation and having one single statement saying the video is sponsored is bad

Essentially, they’re funded by billionaires, and their videos show it. Here’s a couple videos that go into it:

youtu.be/HjHMoNGqQTI

youtu.be/uCuy1DaQzWI

Their videos about the climate for the last few years essentially boil down to “shit sucks, everything is bad, a lot of people are going to die. But wait, here’s an interesting new technology that could save the planet! All we have to do is trust capitalism to make this technology happen, and we’ll be saved!”

I’m of the opinion that we should be brutally fucking honest about the climate, and that copium like this only makes people complacent. If we stopped pumping out greenhouse gases right now, we wouldn’t avoid 3° of warming. Hundreds of millions of people are going to die as a direct result of anthropogenic climate change, and there is nothing we can do about that. If we get complacent, that number will be in the multiple billions. Cute cartoon birds turning into skeletons does not reflect the horror of climate change.

Idunno, now I’m conflicted. On the one hand, having 20ish more years to enjoy life would be great, but winning the lottery via the penny would make the 40ish waking years I have left much higher quality

starman2112,

Oh yeah. It’s an absolute fucking insult to the man. He didn’t actually feel any of the gravity of the situation when he remarked “now I am become death, destroyer of worlds,” he wasn’t making a reference to a religious text, he just remembered that cool time he had sex and his lover dismounted, walked over to the bookcase, pulled a random book off the shelf, and asked “what does this means?” before getting back on

I make x dollars per hour

A meal at a restaurant costs roughly x dollars

I trade one hour of labor for x dollars, then trade x dollars for one meal

YOU DO THIS TOO

Depends on what you’re knowing. The world only starts to look worse and worse when you learn more about geopolitics and climate change. I’ve never had new knowledge about orbital mechanics or lockpicking or 3d printing give me a negative outlook on life

Who does this brand of acceleration help? It’s not people, we die from it. Same with all the life. Is it future life that it helps? Why value potential future life over existent present life? Shouldn’t we be working as hard as we can to improve conditions instead of giving up and killing ourselves?

The fastest way to ease the pain of a broken arm is to cut it off at the shoulder, but sometimes the fastest way to do something is the worst way to do it

The OP is, but the comment you replied to isn’t. They expanded on the original post, and said that while binary search is useful in that situation (along with many others), it would be useless in other situations.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

Ok but the text that you replied to, that you quoted, was “If the event lasts only a moment and leaves no visual cue (e.g. an assault), then binary search is practically useless.” Emphasis mine. If you’d started out saying “there’s ALWAYS a visual cue,” then you likely wouldn’t be getting dragged, but you started out arguing from this position without clarifying it, which makes it seem like you didn’t know what you were talking about. You can’t say that you can simply look for visual cues when the other person specified that there were none.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

But the comment you replied to wasn’t talking about bike thefts specifically, it was talking about unspecified situations that don’t leave traces. You responded to someone saying that binary search doesn’t work in situations that don’t leave cues not by arguing against the premise (e.g. “but no such event exists, everything leaves cues”), but by telling them that you simply have to look for the cues from the hypothetical event that didn’t leave any.

starman2112,
@starman2112@sh.itjust.works avatar

But it didn’t, because if it did then it would fall under the second paragraph of their comment, where they said that binary search would be useful. The comment isn’t just talking about bike thefts.

That doesn’t make any sense. By that logic, wouldn’t it be disrespectful to the English localization team to not listen to the dub? I mean, if you’re going for perfect authenticity, the subtitles weren’t there blocking the view in the original broadcast either, but you still have those on

My problem with a lot of wholesomeposting is that it often feels vacuous and insincere. Gimme stats about the decline of child mortality instead of a generic “you can do it! I believe in you! (I’m not personally invested in your success but I want to feel like I’ve done something nice today!)”
