sunbeam60,

You’ve got to go through a round of redundancies/layoffs to learn this. No amount of telling some freebie-munching programmer will teach them. Source: I was a freebie-munching programmer.

And the acceptance beyond that is “… and that’s ok, it’s not the company’s job to love you, but don’t for a second be fooled into loyalty”.

sunbeam60,

Not a millennial but broadly agree with you.

It’s also just so … base … like, ok, your characters bonk, we get it, just fade to black. When did a sex scene add anything to a story other than titillation? It’s the equivalent of serving me up another algorithmically targeted TikTok video. I feel like they’re just taking advantage of me.

So, in short, I’d be happy if they leave that shit at the door. If I was searching for porn, I’d know where to look.

sunbeam60,

Second by far. Just felt so hard hitting and Greengrass is a genius.

sunbeam60,

I bet it felt like Groundhog Day watching that film over and over.

sunbeam60,

Totally. Blows my mind that people can’t seem to understand that if it’s hotter outside than inside, the inside won’t get any cooler by opening windows.

Last summer in London (42 C!!) we became a box of shadows during the day. Keep the cool inside.

sunbeam60,

Houses are built differently in hot areas. Very few windows facing south. Shutters on all windows. All windows deeply recessed. Channel the wind, ie have a deep through channel that spans across the house so any pressure differential causes air to exchange. Tiled floors. No/low insulation.

In Northern Europe, we live in sweat boxes designed for letting in maximum light and keeping beat inside the house.

sunbeam60,

You are completely correct. Most certified simulators aren’t used for familiarisation training but basic manoeuvres. Buying a certified simulator is often extremely expensive and getting one you’ve built certified is insanely expensive and very, very complicated (which is why they often come as pre-assembled kits that flight schools can line up themselves).

I would wager one of my children that this set up isn’t certified.

sunbeam60, (edited )

Yes but in certified simulators. That ain’t no certified simulator.

sunbeam60,

Fuck curved display. You either build a dome or you have three large displays (TVs) arranged in a 270 degree square around you.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

@nixCraft @linux @windowscentralbot

sunbeam60,

I’ve seen non-tech users in Linux many times. It doesn’t take them 2 months to acclimatise, at most 2 weeks but typically just 2 days. If there’s a blocker, there’s a blocker (like “my shitty bank requires some shitty software installed and they don’t support Linux”) but if there are no blockers it’s really quick. 95% of normal users just need a browser. The next 4% need LibreOffice. It’s only the last 1% that have some need that doesn’t sit in an office package or the browser.

We, the gamers, the geeks, the golems, WE have needs that may not be satisfied with Linux. But we are not normal users. So about 3% of us can be bothered to try and accept the missing software (and learn to love the new - God there are some apps I miss when in Windows), the remaining 97% either try and can’t accept the new habits required or don’t try.

But normal users?! Stick them in Mint Linux and show them where the browser is and they’ll be fine.

IMHO.

sunbeam60,

Dunno really. I hardly use any office app except for Excel on Windows. What are the best alternatives in your view?

sunbeam60,

I’m old. I’m low-end overweight. I don’t shave for days. I’ve been in tech for decades. I was describing myself and my ilk as golems.

Also, it just happened to alliterate with gamers and geeks.

sunbeam60,

Ha ha fair enough.

sunbeam60,

However, when you travel in China, you don’t have to travel far before you realise that broadly the Chinese support their government because things are getting better and in many places are on par or better than the west.

sunbeam60,

I love how you start off by saying you’ve never been to China and you never intend to go, then immediately discard the claims of someone that’s been there a lot.

sunbeam60,

I’ve only been using Linux seriously for the last couple of years.

The way I see it, Linux is a kernel AND drivers, GNU is code that can be compiled to build a toolset used to daily-drive the kernel and a distribution is a assembly of kernel, drivers, tools and software (apps).

I’m sure that’s wrong but it makes sense to me.

sunbeam60, (edited )

Or more precisely. You end up in a dark room. You’re not sure it’s in the castle.

sunbeam60,

Flying back from China 4-5 months ago. Checked in at the airport. Turned out you needed a COVID test to come back into the U.K. So I missed the flight. That sucked but then I had to try getting a rapid COVID test in the middle of the night; ended up at a public Chinese hospital where no one spoke English. Fucking nightmare.

sunbeam60,

The main reason I never got into Slow Horses was its utterly ridiculous stereotype of the “computer boffin”. It was so cack-handed it was almost hard to believe.

sunbeam60,

Yes except it’s all open source and if you’re unhappy you can fork. Good luck forking iOS.

sunbeam60,

This. All my dell machines work just fine with fwupd.

sunbeam60,

You are forgetting a cardinal rule: When something is likely to affect the press, the press affords it more attention.

So the writers, editors, graphic designers etc of the press are likely to be very affected by generative AI. So they worry about it. So they write about it.

I’m also in a line of work that will see substantial changes … so I understand their plight. But I think a large part of the reason the press write about the use of genAI to make “art output” is that they worry about genAI will make their “art output” soon.

sunbeam60,

What if I told you that weekend days are locale dependent?!

Time and date is the black hole where optimistic programmers go to die. Nothing is simply with localisation and if you think it is, you mustn’t have worked enough with it.

Source: Run a system that schedules millions of interactions across the world and deeply depend on this. The amount of code to manage and/or call out to external services to give us information about time zones, summer time, locale specific settings, day names, calendar systems, week numbers etc etc.

sunbeam60,

In the U.K. we do all the same. Sixth of June.
