Are there any good free alternatives to brilliant.org?

I’ve seen brilliant’s website and I like the fact that they make have alot of interactive visually engaging content but I don’t know if it’s worth the price or if there is any free possibly non profit version available that is just as interactive and visually engaging way to learn different math and science topics that...

Skillshare for another paid-for service. MIT OpenCourseWare is a good resource for free.

thantik,

They aren’t, clearly by looking at your screenshot.

Where to turn to if I need books that are paywalled behind overly expensive academic portals?

I need some books paywalled behind Oxford Politics Trove and they aren’t on Anna’s lib, Zlib, Libgen, Memory of the World, Aaarg, or the Internet Archive. Not sure to whom else to turn to. I hate that knowledge like this is paywalled, and I highly doubt the authors will be paid if I pay the highway robbery of a price.

thantik,

I don’t know why people keep pushing this myth.

thantik,

America benefits from allowing others to fight their wars as a proxy, news at 11.

thantik,

3D TVs will totally be a thing too! You just wait!

thantik,

Because it’s like a dozen fucking people who post 90% of the content. I blocked like, I dunno – 20 people, and it took care of MOST of the weird ass fetish stuff popping up in my feed, leaving the odd cutie here or there.

I’d rather have a severe lack of farmed content, for a lot more genuine posts. Regardless of if it’s “dead” or not. If I see users with like 20k post points, and 100 comment points, I block them.

If there was a way to automatically do this (only show content from users with a certain ratio of posts to comments), I would.

FreeCAD is such garbage though. In something like 6 months, CadSketcher blender plugin made something that was far more functional, and FreeCAD has been in development for 20 years and it still can’t provide a logical, cohesive CAD experience.

Honestly, Solidworks is my hangup too, so I get the willingness to castrate yourself in order to just move to Linux finally. I’m thinking of moving over to their 3DExperienceWorks product that runs in the browser. If it handles my workflow, and I can get the cheap “maker” license without them ever asking me to upgrade it, then I’m finally down to switch full time.

The other big problem that I generally have is window-decoration and padding. I need to find a window manager where I can have things with embedded tabs but pixel-perfect edges. I like a single-pixel edge to my applications and as dense as possible window title bars.

Now that Firefox is releasing Wayland enabled by default, it might be the time to try again.

This is normal. Most “alt” services, rely on outrage and shit to grow user base. Reddit will do something stupid and we’ll get a huge influx again, some people will stay, others will leave.

One of the other alt sites that I was part of had a meme just for this: i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/…/008.png

We need something like this drawn up for Lemmy but without the N word.

thantik,

Do lemmy users actually recommend trackballs? Because that might be a dealbreaker for me.

thantik,

I always have felt like blaming cars, of all things, misses the bigger picture. 1 crude oil shipping vessel produces more pollution than the entirety of cars in America will for a year. Cars are one of the things that actually empowers individuals to live their individualized lives. Hell, some people live in their cars/rv/campers and it allows people to escape the rigors of daily life.

I agree we should take aim at making them more environmentally friendly, and take a harder focus on replacing plastic components with metal and/or other recyclable alternatives. If we could sequester carbon into them somehow that would be even better; but things like carbon fiber require nasty epoxies that are difficult to break down again once they need to be recycled.

why aren't r/piratedgames here? I thought they migrated to lemmy too

Not to start a war, but I think the place here is better for free discussion of games piracy. the lemmy community they site on their subreddit is literally dead, has just one or two posts. It would have been good if a rival community to r/piratedgames appears here on dbzer0 too, I mean r/piracy is still there, but this place is...

thantik,

Honestly, pirating anything with an executable in it is just asking for something to happen. The hoops required to mitigate these risks, especially when games mostly now are online with a multiplayer component, I can understand why game-piracy would really only be for the people who are REALLY hardcore into AAA titles. Most of the stuff I purchase now is indie and ends up being better than AAA titles, and it’s cheap enough that I don’t really even want to pirate it.

Additionally, lemmy just doesn’t have the eyeballs that Reddit has…still. I can understand someone’s justification if they stayed over there. I got site-banned once just for reporting a mod for child-predatory statements, and I literally hadn’t even made a comment. Just reporting the post got me banned. So I’m over here hiding from child predators.

Not all Linux contains GNU command line utilities or glibc. Asahi Linux is an example of this, the Linux distro for the new Apple Silicon.

Edit: Correction!

thantik,

There can be. There are certainly Bios’ that don’t give options that motherboards are perfectly capable of changing. I had an old Phenom II that I managed to patch NVME support into the bios so I could boot off of a PCIe Riser.

Granted, I was patching UEFI stuff and none of it was open source – but the idea is the same. Open source bios in theory, could unlock features.

thantik,

I’m not sure people are buying MORE during inflation.

thantik,

Back when making a webpage was <TR>, <TD> and <TABLE>

Edit: HAAA, I can’t put html tags in text! Even with escape characters! Edit2: I DID IT! I had to use the HTML-entity-codes!

Is ProtonVPN worth it?

@piracy

Got reminded of this while reading about ProtonMail. The reason I haven't gotten into proper is that I don't have a VPN for torrenting, and the reason I don't have a VPN is that I don't . So it would be nice if I got a good VPN while myself.

Will ProtonVPN rat me out to Comcast? I know some VPNs don't hide what you're downloading from your ISP, for reasons I don't fully understand.

thantik, (edited )

I don’t know if this just got initially deleted or whatever, but I use wireguard with a “custom” plan on windscribe, and it’s like $1/month. IPs are shared among hundreds of users and they keep no identifying logs.

I use a split tunnel on the vanilla wireguard client, so I’m not using anything from windscribe software-wise; and I set my torrent client to only use the ethernet device for the tunnel. So no need to worry about kill switches or leaking shit when the VPN drops.

Also – I’ve tested the Wireguard connection on Windscribe and it easily handles 1gb upload/download.

thantik,

Do one of the eminem skits, like the Ken Kaniff skit where it’s just sounds of someone sucking dick. It’s like a minute long, and nobody will ever invite you back out for Karaoke again. Problem solved.

thantik,

Copy the URL, open it in a private window with ublock origin set to allowed in private windows. Can still view the video, and now they also can’t attribute it to your user account.

So they lose again.

thantik,

Honestly, I’m about to also drop Netflix and find one of these $2/mo plex servers - pay through bitcoin or something. I already run the whole Jellyfin/Sonarr/Radarr/Jackett/Reverse Proxy thing myself, but having to deal with all the local storage is just a pain in the ass. Might as well let someone else deal with it.

thantik,

We were not supposed to go to the moon! Years of building rocket infrastructure and yet nobody other than a select few people have gone to the moon!

Stop building rockets!

thantik,

I would cool-ranch my fucking chicken with that shit for real.

What you’re looking for is Stable Diffusion, so you’ll need to start with installing this: github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui

Then, what you’re looking for is something called ControlNet which can be found here: github.com/lllyasviel/ControlNet

There is a tutorial on setting them both up together here:
stable-diffusion-art.com/controlnet/#:~:text=Cont….

You may also want to check out: antfu.me/posts/ai-qrcode-101 – as I think this is the ControlNet trained for this kind of thing - they just replaced QR codes with text/silhouettes
