That is our win condition. To make it so costly for them that they bail on the idea. Because if we don’t, then it’s one step closer to their internet: locked down, hidden charges everywhere and content under their terms.
This isn’t just about ads, it’s about keeping information free.
Windows as a software package would have never been affordable to individuals or local-level orgs in countries like India and Bangladesh (especially in the 2000’s) that are now powerhouses of IT. Same for many SE Asian, Eastern European, African and LatinoAmerican countries as well....
Yeah, solid take. Even today, the vast vast majority of people don’t even realize Windows isn’t free because every single PC sold, comes with it, preinstalled.
Microsoft’s real dominance is having schools (pre and post secondary), businesses, governments and just about anyone they can force a license on to run their software. Windows, Office (a third of my first year computer course was learning MS Office ffs), etc.
That’s why they got slammed with a multi million dollar class action: www.thatsuitemoney.ca for manipulating their licensing and subsequent fees associated.
Sadly, a pittance when compared to how much they got from all those shady deals. Piracy doesn’t even touch them.
Got reminded of this while reading about ProtonMail. The reason I haven't gotten into proper #piracy is that I don't have a VPN for torrenting, and the reason I don't have a VPN is that I don't #torrent. So it would be nice if I got a good VPN while #degoogling myself.
Will ProtonVPN rat me out to Comcast? I know some VPNs don't hide what you're downloading from your ISP, for reasons I don't fully understand.
I think the point they were making was that a shitty person, as evidenced by his list of crimes, will run a company, shittily. The point of a VPN is anonymity. What good is that promise coming from a shitty, shady person?
I use a seedbox to run qBittorrent with Jackett, and have a bunch of sources on there. I know there are other methods, but that works for me and I’m comfortable with it....
I couldn’t find the Flintstones movie from 1994 anywhere but googling it I found it here archive.org/details/the-flintstones_202304 and you can either download it via torrent or directly. On top of it it says that the movie is CC0 which means Public Domain. But that can’t really be, it’s only 29 years old....
They killed Netscape and had to put in a toggle with the option of other browsers like 10 years later. They paid next to nothing in fines and legal battles, basically putting a stranglehold on the internet itself that took another 10 to kinda of undo.
I assume they have to cash in some. Or else the SEC comes sniffing around like “you guys have given out 3 million shares over ten years but no one has ever cashed a singled one out, hmmmmm”. So those are likely the rare few. And a few units tracks because they aren’t giving $2m in stock to some entry level tech.
I always liken those practices to the same shit they flash musicians or sports figures during negotiations. Wave a mansion, Lambo, gold, some ladies making all kinds of promised. But in the end, some contractual loop hole says that you’re just “borrowing” it all. Fake money.

I am using ProtonVPN, and have (or so I thought) set up qBittorrent to bind to the network interface that ProtonVPN is using (tun0). The connection symbol turns red if I turn off the VPN, and downloads will stop. However, when checking the torrent address on ipleak.net, it seems that this bind is not working properly - my real...
You bound torrent client to tun0 You bound VP to tun0
If VPN is on, torrent client connects using VPN. If VPN is off, torrent client cannot connect to VPN or internet.
This is what should happen. It would be more helpful if you told us what you want to do. Do you want the torrent client to keep downloading but no longer behind the VPN? Because most people don’t want that. Which is why they set it up your way. Just in case the VPN accidentally goes down, you dox yourself.
Also a point I haven’t seen made, but a website is not torrent traffic. You could be behind a VPN through your browser but not through your torrent client (Apple’s Private Relay does this, only blanking you from websites). So the fact your torrent client stopped and the web was working seems to point to everything working as it should. You shouldn’t lose any internet unless it’s also bound to tun0.
Also, what did you use to create the tun0 interface to bind your client and VPN to?
Yeah, be careful relying on status messages from trackers, most are actually not that reliable and may misreport. Have had it happen on occasion as well.
I need to buy one for an old TV i have. I have plex at home and i use also Stremio + real Debrid. If the device offers a controller it would be nice. Thanks!
It’s about the soul. Vampires don’t cast reflections because they are soulless. Cameras have been criticized for stealing peoples souls. Ergo, a camera would suffer the same fate as the mirror: no soul to capture or reflect.
But I mean it’s just made up lore. That’s admittedly stretched thin.
I was wondering if a VPN would add any kind of security or privacy if one is connecting to a host with a client/browser that supports DNS over HTTPS and that host supports encrypted client hello. Is there a way for the ISP or anything in between to shape traffic or even know what is being accessed? The only thing that should be...
This is the correct answer. A VPN encrypts and obfuscates all your connections, not just the web browser.
If all you care about is hiding the websites you visit from your ISP, DNS over TLS is fine. But just remember that you’re bleeding data by using your real IP (ISP, geolocation, etc.). And any other connection, is just unabashedly, you.
