QuazarOmega, to privacyguides in Standard Notes is changing its license

In terms of privacy, nothing would change, it’s still the same as ever so I think the recommendation can absolutely stay up, even proprietary apps are suggested on Privacy Guides.
In terms of software freedom, this is a terrible change and I really dislike projects moving to source-available models, in this case, as the other commenters said there, I don’t even think it’s legal, unless every contributor has signed a CLA in the past.
I feel for not wanting to be explioted by corporate, but they could have gone the dual licensing path and instead chose to restrict everyone’s freedom, even us users. Now that doesn’t mean forks can’t be made I believe, it’s just that anyone who does that, won’t ever be able to sell the service which could be unsustainable since they made the server CC-BY-NC-SA, that’s a big turn off for those who want to host that

Nawor3565, to privacy in Google seems to be blocking API access for Piped video servers

Not to be a downer but… how did people not anticipate this happening? Google is likely going to do everything they can to shut down non-official clients like Piped, since they’re sidestepping all of YouTube’s revenue streams. Hopefully they don’t take the nuclear option and somehow lock down the API and make it much harder to download videos via tools like yt-dlp.

confetti_8tVST5, (edited ) to asklemmy in has anyone tried out lemmynade as a lemmy app?

Its pretty nice so far. The only bug I found is when you subscribe to a new instance and it hangs and it goes back to "subscribe" instead of "pending" like I saw on jerboa it kinda confused me. Adding your account manually was kind of a pain since there wasn't a "show password" option so if you can, stick to autofill with a password manager instead. Also it does stutter a bit when scrolling on a post with 100+ comments but just give it a second

RNC, to privacyguides in Logseq: A privacy-first, open-source platform for knowledge management.
@RNC@kbin.social avatar

Logseq is fantastic.

The outline approach is great for quick note contributions without worrying about the look of the notes you're trying to capture. Writing journal entries or pages is so seamless, and linking is so easy. Block references are also a powerful addition.

The mobile version is lacking compared to say obsidian, but I've found it good as I'm not focused on propping up the application, rather focusing on my content/notes.

For this I have only two words: F…k Twitter. Like FB, just visit with VPN, TOR, mask, rubber gloves and disinfectant spray, best from a Cyber Café…

This looks cool, but I'm not sure there's any reason to use it over Foundry if you already have a license.

You’re probably right, but it’s an alternative for people who don’t.

scrubbles, to selfhosted in Object Storage for embedded pict-rs on from scratch install? · Issue #287 · LemmyNet/lemmy-docs
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

I did it with blob storage, ended up being much cleaner and cheaper. You’ll need to toy with it a bit, but from scratch will be a lot easier than the migration I had to do. You’ll easily eat up 100+GB in pictures, which on the cloud on a VM’s drive that’s a fair chunk of money. Object storage is pennies.

@glowie@h4x0r.host avatar

Yup Yup! I’ve got it uploading objects. It seems to be an issue with fetching them. The hash is either mismatched or it’s not correctly trying to grab from the sled repo. So, I get a 500 error in store response. Not really sure how to fix it.

lukecooperatus, to opensource in Composition | Manage your ⎄ compose sequences
@lukecooperatus@lemmy.ml avatar

This looks interesting, but I don’t understand what it’s for. I read through the readme, but came out none the wiser. What exactly is a compose sequence?

qaz, (edited )

A compose key (sometimes called multi key) is a key on a computer keyboard that indicates that the following (usually 2 or more) keystrokes trigger the insertion of an alternate character, typically a precomposed character or a symbol.

Wikipedia

It’s a method to combine several characters on your keyboard and use it to create a special character which is not on the keyboard. For example “ and e produces ë. This tool allows you to configure those combinations.

But thanks for the feedback. I’ll update the readme to add some more context.

pl_woah, to privacy in Privacy Concerns on Lemmy: A Call for More User Control

The lemmy devs would probably take something sensible like that and flat out shoot it down because they think they know better.

youngyoshieboy, to linux in Just found about the BORE scheduler from solus. Anyone know if it actually improves responsiveness for desktop use? If so why is it not used more?

Same question here, anyone having benchmark or something?

mactan,

there was some interest in my lug with the different schedulers but attempts at benchmarking all fell within margin of error from our lay attempts at measuring

Conceptually this is really cool, but the hole punch is oddly misaligned on my Pixel 6, so I can’t imagine it looking good.

I had almost given up hope that someone would make a Subsonic compatible app that doesn’t suck. Dsub was the only really functional one and it’s quite dated.

silentknyght, to selfhosted in Tempo – An open source music client for Subsonic built natively for Android, now with Android Auto support

… I’m shocked. I thought all development on subsonic had dried up. I used it and dsub for literal years, but switched to Plex after it seemed I was paying for nothing. :(

CustodialTeapot, to opensource in Friendica (open source facebook alternative) releases version 2023.12 with the ability to curate feeds and more

I don’t know much about Friendica, does it have a website/pwa that I can try?

Or does it need a party to create a site like Lemmy?
