You’re right, I probably should go rewatch that episode where the crew triggers a Cardasians trap, and the station captures them, and Dukat comes to gloat.
Everyone is choosing red because they think they would be rich, but would they?
Imagine having the knowledge, that you knowingly stepped back in time, and all of your memories are now not real. They won’t happen again unless you actually act exactly as you had before. No one believes anything you say because you are 6. You’re forced to go through school again at 6.
Let’s say you use your genius to progress quickly through school. Those sorts of kids become famous prodigies. You would end up on the talk show circuit with Ellen.
You would also know way more about your parents than you should at that age, and cause familial issues that would land you on Dr. Phil.
Imagine how torturous it would be to relive every moment, not being able to convince anyone of anything due to your age, unless you give up the fact that you were somehow sent back in time and know the future. Would you be able to convince your family without going insane? Would any government agency take qcute interest in your foresight? Imagine having to keep a level head while also going through puberty a second time.
How much will your presence affect the timeline? Maybe your first big move to get rich causes all subsequent moves to not exist. Maybe your parents hate you. Maybe it’s chaos theory. Maybe you end up taking a path away from opulence and become an addict due to the constant anxiety, regret and boredom. Maybe you become a nihilistic mess that drives you to a worse life than you had before.
I’d take the definite of $10M. I know what I would do with it right now. I know it would be good.
Edit: a downvote without a reply telling me how I’m wrong is really an upvote.
I’m not really understanding why you’d need to convince anyone of anything? Why would you need to tell anyone you went back in time? All you need to do to become rich when going back in time is to memorize a winning lotto ticket or to invest in something that you know will make it big. Why do you think that you’d need to convince people you aren’t crazy or whatever you’re saying? Legitimately curious.
With going back and time, you could both become rich and change things and events from your past that you regret.
An adult stuck in a 6 year old body that somehow knows everything and is more mature than their parents and also has money to invest, that I’m sure that won’t rouse any suspicions.
I’d “suffer” through school again happily if I could take some opportunities that once passed me by. I was at a good age when Bitcoin hit the scene. I thought it was not very interesting and probably wouldn’t amount to much… At a time where you could get several a day with little more than the computing power of an era appropriate smartphone.
$10M now vs mining as many Bitcoin as you could back then, and then cashing out when it peaked in 2021… Just that simple change and the 10M seems like nothing.
I also made some strategic errors in my youth, dropping out of school and going to work full time at a dead end retail job, and working there for years before deciding to go and finish my education. I had saved nothing from my time working and put myself pretty deep into debt by the end of it.
By the time I graduated, I was pushing 30, I was something like six figures in debt, and I had no job prospects. I ended up working at a call center.
So yeah, I’ll suffer through grade school and high school again if it means I can do it right. I wouldn’t excel so much that I stood out… Maybe just enough to skip a grade, get started on college just a little bit sooner. Invest any money I had into Apple or something, right before the big iPhone explosion. I would still be financially set for life, knowing what I know.
If your family had a PC at that time absolutely. Just wait for the first inklings and start mining. It was way easier at the start. You’d be able to get several thousands pretty easy. Maybe you get some visa gift cards as a kid for Christmas, dump em in there. Or even just go to any store and use your allowance to buy one. Then sell at the peak. EZPZ
Yeah, you can do that. Bitcoin is anonymous and you could earn it relatively easy when it first came out. If you want to get real fucked up with it you could make even more by appealing to those early black markets and use your age as a cover, but that’s risk.
Where is your initial capital coming from. Less than 100,000 will not get you to 10 mil, even mining at an early age requires either wealthy parents or venture capital.
Running a digital farm takes money. Something you clearly haven’t thought out.
I’m liking the “going back to when I was 6 with all the knowledge I have now” option, but in reality 6 year old me would probably be too immature to know I need to remember it and by the time I needed to use that information in any sane way it would have been long forgotten.
I mean some people are saying get bitcoin early days, but 6 year old me was at least 10 years off Bitcoin existing.
It would also really suck knowing how easy it was to obtain information in the future only to be stuck in the past and barely have access to the internet at all.
I think people underestimate how much the physical state of your body, ie hormones brain structure etc play in how you make decisions.
When I was a lad I almost always knew I was making the wrong decisions but felt powerless in the moment to stop myself. I also had basically no concept of the future as a real thing that would happen and could be planned for until I was like 27 or so. Like the logical knowing things part of my brain knew the right moves but the doing things me rarely consulted with knowing things me.
Not to mention that kids have a serious lack of control over their own destinies.
I honestly think going back in time with all my memories is one of the worse hells I can imagine. Just doomed to watch myself fuck up in similar ways again and hope that it all works out “OK” this time too.
Blue. Knowing what I know would make me a fucked up 6 year old. I wouldn’t be able to make friends, I would creep people out or even end up in a mental institution. 10 million wold fix all my current problems. And there wold be a lot left for hookers and coke.
i had a thought about this.. ive been watching lower decks
the emergence of new life forms seems almost trivial to everyone.. its something that happens all the time.
for some perspective, humans are pulled out of other humans at hypothetical, but totally realistic rate of something like 1000 babies/hour... the 'miracle of life' at volume.
for each one of these humans, its clearly a momentous occasion. in aggregate, not so much.
edit: duuude its actually closer to 16,000/hour. damn
I feel like there’s a difference between a worker robot deciding it doesn’t want to live or die at the command of its humanoid creators, or a collections of nanites establishing an emergent intelligence, and a Federation Starship locking out its crew of 1,014 people and seeking out a white dwarf star like a salmon swimming upstream so it could give birth to an entirely new lifeform.
Even setting aside the ethical implications of using a ship capable of such a thing as transport, and putting into dangerous combat situations, is Starfleet prepared for similar events to happen on all their ships? What happened to the emergent lifeform after it left the Enterprise? Is it still out there? Why did it look like a screen saver from 1992?
But the crew of the Enterprise are fundamentally uncurious about the wider implications of the event.
“Amazing, isn’t it captain? An entirely new lifeform brought into being by the very ship we sail through the stars.” “Quite so, Number One. Tell me, what’s our next stop?” “We’re going to rendezvous with the USS Hood to pick up lieutenant Ro; she just finished her advanced tactical training.” “Excellent! We’ll have to throw her a ‘Welcome Back’ party in Ten Forward.”
Lol the entire enterprise crew needs some deep therapy after all the traumatic shit they deal with on the daily. The most unrealistic part of that show was how none of them became became grizzled after 10 years of life altering experiences and losses though they often showed others who did. I want to assume they had access to more than troi and just didn’t show it because an entire crew probably couldn’t be supported by one therapist similarly to how whichever physical health doctor on board had lots of help and even other doctors.
Wait like restart as in go back in time to the year I was 6 or restart as in become a 6 year old in 2024. Because if it’s the former hell yeah stocks, bitcoin, sports betting back to the future style. If it’s the latter fuck that.
I’m thinking the situation would be, you would be reverting to 6 year old you in 2024, living with your spouse and kids… at that point I think I would be fine
Blue. No mistake reversion or bitcoin investing would outweigh possibly never meeting my partner again. With Blue, I have everything I could ever want from this life, with red, I may lose everything important to me now.
Absolutely. Anyone who would go back in time purely to make more money is a fool if they think having more than 10 million dollars would make a tangible difference on their quality of life. Who cares if you make a billion off of bitcoin? For 10 mil you can be extremely comfortable and don’t have to relive some of the most awkward years of your life. Only way it would be different is if your choices got someone killed or something.
So true. My wife and I are high school sweet hearts but also both very different people now. The boy she fell in love with initially I couldn’t properly emulate. We were deep into Christianity and even met at church. We’ve since both lost our faith. I wouldn’t be able to pretend without her seeing through my bullshit.
Blue pill. I’m young enough (37) that I’d lose far more than I’d gain if I chose Red. The knowledge I currently possess can change the world with 10 million.
Everyone. I’m writing a book to explain but I’ve come up with a problem solving framework that can solve any clearly defined problem using a combination of strategies and theories from a wide variety of different subject areas. But I’m still in the process of articulating it. Original idea is only 2 months old at this point, so I still need more time to tinker and experiment with it.
The reason 10 million would be helpful is that it would simply enable me to quit my job and focus entirely on my long term plan.
What’s a deck? Does that mean a presentation? I’m not really interested in selling the idea, I think it’s too important to risk just becoming another money hoarding trick for some soulless corporation to just keep for their own ends.
If anything it’s going to get published open source. It doesn’t belong to me, it belongs to everyone.
Yeah, I will. It still needs more preliminary work though. All I have is a rough outline that’s sufficient for me to verbally walk someone through it in 2.5 hours. Nowhere near ready for people to be able to read it and know what I’m talking about. If anything it looks like gibberish right now, or it looks like I’m a crackpot. But so far I’m comforted by the fact that everyone I’ve explained it to thinks I’m on to something. I’m happy with the progress rate though, I’m only 2 months in, and juggling a lot in life right now.
It gives you both, but at what cost? If you have a spouse or child, that’s probably not going to happen again in round two. You’re going to make different decisions that take you on a different life path. Even if you made the same decisions, is your significant other actually going to fall in love with you when you’re going on the first date with 10 years of history already? You’re not going to bring that new relationship energy with you and you’re going to seem weird since you already know them so well. Even if you win them over, you won’t have the same kid. The odds of the same sperm finding the same egg are millions to one, possibly even higher since you probably won’t do it on that exact day. What about all your lifelong friends? Are you actually going to form meaningful relationships at 6 or 10 years old when you have the mind of a 30 year old, or whatever you are by that time? Probably not. I think the cost to go back would be very high.
Except it doesn’t specify that you go back in time to when you were 6 years old, but that you “restart your life at 6 years of age” so a fairly reasonable interpretation would be that you’ll be a 6 year old in 2024. Monkeys paw and all that.
Now, I personally think it’s more interesting if it did mean that you went back in time.
Thats actually even better than just restarting. I already want to make it to 120 to see what 3 different centuries looks so this would make that unrealistic goal so much more accomplishable. Also i will have an idea of what medical things im going to look into and see what options i would have as a kid today vs 40+ years ago
Totally agree. 10 million dollars will never buy me those years back. With remote work I could probably make enough of a living to get by until I age back into adulthood. At the age of 6 I’d have a higher brain plasticity, so I literally could get smarter faster only this time I could direct all of my potential into something a little more useful then just learning how the world works. With modest investing I could easily get to 10 mil by the time I’m at my current age just due to compound interest.
And lastly I could easily reach 120, and with medical advancement who knows!
The more I think about it, being six years old again really wouldn’t be that bad at all.
Edit: Assuming I’m still me but only younger, it’s not like I’d have to go back to school again as I already have diplomas proving I’ve done that before. So I could probably just tell any potential employees that I have dwarfism until I age back up. With the right clothes, hair, and possibly a little makeup (to make me look older than 6), the second I open my mouth no one would believe I’m six and would assume I have some kind of congenital disease.
