George of the Jungle is a masterpiece

TheSparrowPrince, (edited )

Interesting! I guess the studio’s marketing for it didn’t connect with me. I’ll have to watch it next chance I get.

I remember the old series being pretty basic with a Tarzan-like plot that didn’t evolve much between episodes, which is probably why they decided to do a fish-out-of-water story for the 90s film, or so I remember. Then again, I could be confusing it with other Brenden Frasier films from around that time like “Blast from the Past” and “Encino Man”.

It is a fish out of water story, a really well done one

Kolanaki, (edited ) to asklemmy in Am I the only one getting agitated by the word AI?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

The only time I was agitated by it was with the George Carlin thing.

It pissed me off that it was done without permission. It annoyed me that “AI” also kinda looks like “AL” with a lowercase L and when next to another name, makes it read like AL CARLIN or AL GEORGE. And it divided me somewhat because I watched the damn special and it was mostly funny and did feel like Carlin’s style (though it certainly didn’t sound right and it had timing issues). So, like… It wasn’t shit in and of itself, but the nature of what it is and the fact it was done without permission or consent is concerning. Shame on Will Sasso for that. He could have just done his own impersonation and wrote his own jokes in the style of Carlin; it would have been a far better display of respect and appreciation than having an AI do it.

I don’t think he’s a sick and disgusting person for this; even before it all blew up, it seemed more like a tribute to a comedian he adored. Just a poorly thought out way of doing one that may have some pretty hard consequences.

iarigby,

Despite the presentation as an AI creation, there was a good deal of evidence that the Dudesy podcast and the special itself were not actually written by an AI, as Ars laid out in detail this week. And in the wake of this lawsuit, a representative for Dudesy host Will Sasso admitted as much to The New York Times.

arstechnica.com/…/george-carlins-heirs-sue-comedy…

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Just further evidence Sasso could have just done the impersonation himself and it would have been a fine tribute (and had better timing and delivery), but he used an AI to replicate his voice and mannerisms instead. Sure, I don’t think he could have done a great job of impersonating how Carlin sounds but the mannerisms and delivery would have been enough and something he should be pretty good at considering his time on MadTV where he did a lot of impersonation stuff (such as his Stephen Segal character).

This is essentially the premise of Walk Away by Cory Doctorow.

You DO need that thing that’s going to “satisfy the same basic need that capitalism does.”

most people are not capitalists and hold no capital now.

it sounds like you just want to ban big business. i like the idea of removing limited/collective liability. ceos/executives/boards need to risk more jail time for those big salaries and the terrible decisions they make. but also, you could tax the big guys into the ground and provide a ton of social services.

Danterious,

most people are not capitalists and hold no capital now.

Yeah most people aren’t but almost everyone has to participate in a capitalist system.

it sounds like you just want to ban big business.

No I want to use a system that isn’t capitalism.

shreddy_scientist, (edited ) to privacy in How Do I Avoid Giving Home Address to Bank?
@shreddy_scientist@lemmy.ml avatar

I had to change my address to my physical address from a PO Box in the first week of the year to prevent my account getting closed. This was with a major bank, and it’s all thanks to the patriot act. Then again, I do have a checking account with a much smaller bank and they haven’t said a word about it. I use the street address with a “unit number” for my box. Seems like they either haven’t dug into it and realized it’s a PO Box or they’re just small enough where they don’t care much about it like the big banks. So basically, you need a physical address these days, if you don’t you risk account closure.

pineapplelover,

I mean I could try not using a big bank. Thanks for that. I’ll see how moving over to a small bank goes using a usps p.o box.

MajorHavoc, (edited ) to linux in Laptop companies: which one?

Weirdly, my (five year old) Microsoft Surface runs Ubuntu perfectly. (Edit to clarify, after some initial hassle.)

I’m eying a Framework 16 next.

Edit: To clarify, I would not recommend purchasing a Microsoft Surface to put Linux on it. As others have pointed out, it’s not the smoothest setup experience.

If anyone already has a Surface and wants to extend it’s life with Linux, that I recommend wholeheartedly. With the disclaimer that there was some weird nerdy deep-dive extra setup needed.

krash,

Certain surface models run linux fine, but I wouldn’t recommended it as a linux laptop as it requires solving several issues before you get a working computer.

MajorHavoc,

That is a terrific point!

Also if you’ve got more than one device save the patched apk so you don’t have to do the patching more than once.

I had it nag me and attempt to hide the install button the last time I updated revanced I turned it off as I think its only a matter of time before it attempts to remove adblockers or other sideloaded apps.

bela, to datahoarder in Google Books - colour images

I just spent a bit too much time making this (it was fun), so don’t even tell me if you’re not going to use it.

You can open up a desired book’s page, start this first script in the console, and then scroll through the book:

<span style="color:#323232;">let imgs = new Set();
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">function cheese() {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  for(let img of document.getElementsByTagName("img")) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    if(img.parentElement.parentElement.className == "pageImageDisplay") imgs.add(img.attributes["src"].value);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  }
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">setInterval(cheese, 5);
</span>

And once you’re done you may run this script to download each image:

<span style="color:#323232;">function toDataURL(url) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  return fetch(url).then((response) => {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    return response.blob();
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  }).then(blob => {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    return URL.createObjectURL(blob);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  });
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">async function asd() {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  for(let img of imgs) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    const a = document.createElement("a");
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    a.href = await toDataURL(img);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    let name;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    for(let thing of img.split("&amp;")) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">      if(thing.startsWith("pg=")) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        name = thing.split("=")[1];
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        console.log(name);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">        break;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">      }
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    }
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    a.download = name;
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    document.body.appendChild(a);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    a.click();
</span><span style="color:#323232;">    document.body.removeChild(a);
</span><span style="color:#323232;">  }
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span><span style="color:#323232;">
</span><span style="color:#323232;">asd();
</span>

Alternatively you may simply run something like this to get the links:

<span style="color:#323232;">for(let img of imgs) {
</span><span style="color:#323232;">	console.log(img)
</span><span style="color:#323232;">}
</span>

There’s stuff you can tweak of course if it don’t quite work for you. Worked fine on me tests.

If you notice a page missing, you should be able to just scroll back to it and then download again to get everything. The first script just keeps collecting pages till you refresh the site. Which also means you should refresh once you are done downloading, as it eats CPU for breakfast.

Oh and NEVER RUN ANY JAVASCRIPT CODE SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET TELLS YOU TO RUN
